Discussion - There are various instrumental music groups in the Lowlands of Luzon, there are Brass Bands which are brought by the
Spaniards and Americans, and Bamboo Ensembles like Musikong Bumbong, Pangkat Kawayan and Angklung Ensemble which were
developed in the Philippines.
Brass Band - The Brass Band is a musical ensemble that consist of brass wind instruments, brass, and percussion instruments. In the
Philippines, they are usually played in fiestas, religious and civic celebrations. Its repertoire may include folk songs, popular music, and
dance music, among others. Common Brass Band Instruments:

Las Piñas Bamboo Organ


A Philippine National Treasure, the Bamboo Organ can be found in St. Joseph’s Church Las Piñas City. It is made of 902 bamboo pipes.
It was completed in 1824 under the supervision of Fr. Diego Ciera. Every February, the city celebrates the International Bamboo Organ
Festival. A number of established foreign and local artist participate in the cultural event. The festival’s aim to pursue and develop the
rich cultural tradition of Las Piñas City.
Musikong Bumbong
Musikong Bumbong are Filipino marching bands that use woodwind instruments that are
made of bamboo. The shapes and sizes are similar to brass band instruments but have
different souds. The Musikong Bumbong playing together produces 1 good harmony.

The D’ Original Malabon Musikong Bumbong started as a plain Banda de Boca (meaning “bibig” or mouth) in Barrio Tonsuya, Malabon
in 1896. Felix Ramos was both the founder and inventor of the bamboo instruments. The first members of the band are Katipuneros.
The band was renamed several times but is currently known as Musikawayan under the leadership of P/Lt. Col Gilbert M. Ramos, a
fourth-generation descendant of the band’s founder.
Pangkat Kawayan
Pangkat Kawayan, popularly known as the “Singing Bamboos of the Philippines,” is an
orchestra that plays music using non-traditional bamboo instruments. Founded in 1996, it
is always composed of young students who are selected from Quezon City and Manila
Schools.
The group’s musical instruments, numbering more than a hundred are made of six kinds
of the versatile bamboo in various sizes, shapes, and designs.

Angklung Ensemble

The Angklung Ensemble is a small group of musicians who plays


angklung bamboo instruments. The angklung instrument is made of
bamboo rattle tubes attached to a bamboo frame.
The manner of playing the angklung is by rapidly shaking the bottom
part of the frame while the other hand steadily holds the upper part of the
instrument. Each angklung shaker plays one or two pitches. To make the
sound more interesting and lively, it is commonly accompanied by
double bass, guitars, and percussion instruments. Ideally, the angklung
has more than two and a half, or around 30 pitches to be able to play a
wide range of musical pieces. The angklung instruments can also be a
part of the other ensemble like the Pangkat Kawayan.

Readings - The Tayug National High School (TNHS) Koro de Tayug represented the Philippines in the International Southeast Asian
Ministers of Education Organization (SEAMEO) Angklung Contest adjudged at Bangkok, Thailand last December 9, 2015. The said
pride of Tayug, Pangasinan was awarded 2nd Prize for Traditional Category performing the musical piece SEAMEO song and the classic
Filipino song Anak by Freddie Aguilar with the accompaniment of Angklung, Bass Guitar and a drum set. The group was also awarded
1st Prize as they performed the musical pieces SEAMEO Song and Pamulinawen in the Digital Angklung Category by using the
Angklung Apps for Android phones in the said event. This is under the privilege of their Music teacher and choir conductor, Dr.
Domingo T. Dismaya II, now Principal I of Sto. Thomas National High School, San Nicolas, Pangasinan.
In the present time, music studies introduce the classification of musical instruments called the Hornbostel-Sachs System. Erich Moritz
von Hornbostel (Austrian music scholar) and Curt Sachs (German organologist) devised a system for classifying musical instruments.
