Graham Sutherland

Graham Sutherland was an artist in the 1900s. He is famous for his

work with glass, fabrics, and portraits. It is said his work is inspired by
landscape and religion and he designed part of the tapestry for the
Coventry cathedral because of it. He
is also famous for making a painting
of Winston Churchill
This is the tapestry in Coventry
Cathedral. It looks very geometric
with many sharp-edged shapes. I find
this a bit boring as it doesn’t have
much color. Although the painting
underneath doesn’t have much color
as well, I think it looks better because
I would personally look at the bottom image rather than the top one.
The reason for this is because the tone is very well developed

This painting looks like it has been

made with pastels which relates with
what we are doing in class at the
moment. It has used the same colors
for the background but just darker
shades. The person himself is well
toned with shading. I personally think
this looks quite good because of the
shading and addition of tone. I think it
could’ve been better if he used the oil
pastel and ink trick because it looks very interesting when we do it in
class
