Mechanized underground coal production scenario
Continuous Miner
 Currently, UG coal production in India is very less,
around 4% (32.7 MT). Globally, the share varies
between 25-35%. In China, it is around 95%
 First mechanized coal production with Continuous
Miner (CM) started in 2002. This technology proved
as most suitable for Indian geo-mining conditions
 As of now total 31 units of CM are in operation in 27
different UG mining projects. Currently accounts for
74% of total production from underground
Highwall Miner
 First Highwall Miner (HWM) was introduced in India in
2011, till 2017 only two HWM was in operation
 HWM technology extract coal from exposed seams
when economical surface mining limits are reached
 This technology, a safe and productive option for
unique digging applications having recovery of 40 to
70% depending on geological conditions
 The current HWM population leaped to 6 units in last
6 years
Ambitious future plan : Underground mass production

 Coal India has planned to ramp up its underground coal production by four-fold to 100 MT by 2030 from the
current 25.5 MT. Around 70% of the country’s coal reserves are conducive for underground mining
 The plan is to introduce 50 sets of Continuous Miner by 2025 with peak production potential of 25 MTPA
 The aim is to make underground production sizably supplement the open cast output. At current rate, mineable
coal reserves at existing open cast will slowly start lowering
 Coal India is also planning to introduce 10 units of Highwall Miner with a projected production potential of 5
MTPA
 One of the major reasons why coal production from underground mines in India has not grown at the expected
pace due to over dependency on imported equipment and lack of indigenous manufacturing
 Gainwell can actually bridge the gap between demand and supply of indigenous underground mining equipment
by investing in India and make these machines to support the requirement of India and also for global market

Rich legacy of underground mechanized equipment

 DBT was established in Lunen, Germany in 1880 during the start of coal
mining expansion in Germany. One of the respected names in
underground coal mining industry, DBT was present at all coal mining
market globally
 During 2006, major American manufacturer for Surface Mining
Equipment, Bucyrus acquired DBT to expand into underground mining
market. The UG product line included Longwall and Room & Pillar
Products
 In 2011, Caterpillar acquired Bucyrus to expand their product offering in
Resource Industries. This was the biggest acquisition in the history of
Caterpillar at US$ 8.8 Billion
 In 2016, Caterpillar decided to close down the Room & Pillar business
due to contraction of coal mining in developed economies
Gainwell Engineering inheriting this rich legacy

 Gainwell has seen indigenization opportunity of mechanized UG mining equipment, will be the key
enabler to enhance UG coal production supporting sustainability goal of the nation

 Gainwell signed IP License with Caterpillar in September 2017 for manufacturing of Highwall Miner as
a pilot project to kick start the manufacturing UG mining equipment. Till now we have rolled out four
units of Made in India Highwall Miner

 With the encouraging success, we signed the IP License with Caterpillar to manufacture full range of
UG Room & Pillar Equipment including Longwall Support Equipment in December 2021

 As a part of this arrangement, Gainwell has exclusive license to manufacture the products and supply
to global markets and render product support services to both new and existing active population of
Caterpillar Machines. All the existing Caterpillar Patents and IPs are assigned to Gainwell Group
We are aligned with government’s vision : “Make in India”
Gainwell to end India’s dependence on imported equipment for underground mining
 Government emphasised to decrease its reliance on imported heavy equipment to boost domestic production and reduce
down time due to non-availability of spares
 Planned to phase out import over the period of next 5 to 6 years by encouraging and developing domestic equipment
manufacturers
 Gainwell at the forefront of the evolution of the mining sector by bringing in comprehensive and technologically advanced
product line for domestic and global market
 We got 35 acres of land at Panagarh, West Bengal, investing INR 5 billion, state-of-the-art facility to manufacture UG mining
equipment, first phase operational by April 2023
 Indigenous Ecosystem : We are committed to scale up indigenization to 80% and above in next 3 years
