Strong Verbs Part 6
This lesson will focus on the second class of Strong
verb. Remember that once we learn the primary parts
of a Strong Verb, the other verbs in that class will
follow the pattern.
Strong verbs are categorized by 4 principal parts: The
Present/Infinitive, the Past singular, the Past plural and
the Past participle. These four are often reduced to
the root vowels that define that class.
Strong Verbs Class 6
For Strong Verbs Class 6, The vowels follow the pattern
of:a-ō-ō-a.
Here is the verb faran to go conjugated:

Present

iċ fare I go

þū færst you go

hit færþ it goes

wē faraþ we go

ġē faraþ you go
hīe faraþ they go

Past

iċ fōr I went

þū fōre you went

hit fōr it went

wē fōron we went

ġē fōron you went

hīe fōron they went

Past Participle

faren borne

Similar Class 6 Strong verbs include:

dragan to draw
faran to go, travel
galan to sing
grafan to dig
hladan to load
sacan to quarrel
scacan to shake
scafan to shave
spanan to seduce
wadan to go, wade
wascan to wash
standan to stand

Strong Verbs Class 6 Variant


For some Strong Verbs Class 6, The vowels follow the
pattern of: e-ō-ō-a.
Here is the verb conjugated:

Present

iċ steppe I step

þū stepest you step

hit stepeþ it steps

wē steppaþ we step

ġē steppaþ you step

hīe steppaþ they step

Past

iċ stōp I stepped

þū stōpe you stepped


hit stōp it stepped

wē stōpon we stepped

ġē stōpon you stepped

hīe stōpon they stepped

Past Participle

stapen stepped

scieppan to create, shape
