plant for a rural settlement. The plant is to be built in a mountain stream
with an effective head of 25m, and a flow rate of 600 liters per minute.
Assuming that the plant has an efficiency of 83 %, determine the
following:

i. The power and energy generated by this hydro plant each year?
[5 marks]

ii. Assuming that the average annual power consumption per

home is 3,000 kWh. Determine how many homes can be
supported by this station.
[5 marks]

b. You have joined an engineering firm as an electrical engineer. Your

first task is to design a solar powered electrical system for an
eco-friendly hotel the company is building. The following information is
given:
• Peak power required = 10 kW
• Total electricity consumption per day= 23 kAh
• Expected maximum number of continuous cloudy days = 1.2
• Average sun hours per day= 4.5 hours
• Rated current of solar module = 7 A
• Inverter DC input voltage = 12 V
• No of modules in each series string to provide DC battery= 1

Calculate the number of modules, total area required for the solar
system, given the area of each solar module is around 0.9 m2 , and the
total peak power output of battery bank if the charge amp-hours is about
350 Ah.

2. a. A generating voltmeter is to be designed so that it can have a range

from 20 to 200 k~. If the indicating meter reads a minimum current of
2 f.JA and a maximum current of 25 IJA, evaluate the value of the
capacitance of the generating voltmeter, assuming that the motor
speed is 1500 rpm.

system of a small factory. An engineer working at the plant is required ,.-
to calculate the current that will be drawn from the power utility
company with, and without capacitor bank switched into the system.
For the purpose of this calculation, we will assume that the lines in the
system have zero impedance.

i. If the switch (S) is open, calculate the real, reactive, and

apparent power in the system. Determine the total current
supplied to the distribution system by the utility. Repeat part (i)
with the switch (S) closed.

large part of every day and draws 10 A from the supply. A power
saving device is proposed to increase the efficiency of the motor. The
device was placed in parallel with the unloaded motor, and the current
drawn from the supply drops to 8 A. When two of the devices are
placed in parallel, the current drops to 6 A. What component in the
device will cause this drop in current? Discuss the advantage of the
device. Is the'"'efficiency of the motor increased by the device?
