Normal Distribution

Example 1. Find the area between z = 0 and z = -1.65

Step 1. Sketch the curve

Since z = 1.65 is negative, the area is located to

the left of z = 0.
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area of z = -1.65 from the table.

✓Proceed down the column mark z until you reach 1.6.
Disregard the negative sign (-).

✓Proceed to the right along this row until you reached

column marked 5.

✓The intersection of the row and the column marked 5 is

the area.

✓Hence, the area is 0.4505

Normal Distribution

➢Find the area between z = 0 and z = 2.7

Step 1. Sketch the curve

Since z = 2.7 is positive, the area is located to

the right of z = 0.
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area of z = 2.7 from the table.

✓Proceed down the column mark z until you reach 2.7
Disregard the negative sign (-).

✓Proceed to the right along this row until you reached

column marked 0.

✓The intersection of the row and the column marked 0 is

the area.

✓Hence, the area is 0.4965.

Normal Distribution

Example 2. Find the area between z = -2.43 and

z = 1.81
Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area of z = -2.43 and z = 1.81

• Let A = area between z = -2.43 and z = 1.81
• Let A1 = area between z = 0 and z = -2.43
• Let A2 = area between z = 0 and z = 1.81
From the table,
A1 = 0.4925
A2 = 0.4649
A = A1 + A2
= 0.4925 + 0.4649
= 0.9574
✓The area between z = -2.43 and z = 1.81 is 0.9574
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area between z = -1.88 and z = 2.39

➢Find the area between z = 1.55 and z = 2.47
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area between z = -1.88 and z = 2.39

Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area of z = -1.88 and z = 2.39

• Let A = area between z = -1.88 and z = 2.39
• Let A1 = area between z = 0 and z = -1.88
• Let A2 = area between z = 0 and z = 2.39
From the table,
A1 = 0.4699
A2 = 0.4916
A = A1 + A2
= 0.4699 + 0.4916
= 0.9615
✓The area between z = -1.88 and z = 2.39 is 0.9615
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area between z = 1.55 and z = 2.47

Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area of z = 1.55 and z = 2.47

• Let A = area between z = 1.55 and z = 2.47
• Let A1 = area between z = 0 and z = 1.55
• Let A2 = area between z = 0 and z = 2.47
From the table,
A1 = 0.4394
A2 = 0.4932
A = A2 – A1
= 0.4932 - 0.4394
= 0.0538
✓The area between z = 1.55 and z = 2.47 is 0.0538
Normal Distribution

Example 3. Find the area to the left of z = 2.32

Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area to the left of z = 2.32

• Let A = area to the left of z = 2.32
• Let A1 = area of the half curve
• Let A2 = area between z = 0 and z = 2.32
From the table,
A1 = 0.5
A2 = 0.4898
A = A1 + A2
= 0.5 + 0.4898
= 0.9898
✓Hence, the area to the left of z = 2.32 is 0.9898
Normal Distribution

Example 4. Find the area to the right of z = 0.81

Step 1. Sketch the curve

Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area to the right of z = 0.81

• Let A = area to the right of z = 0.81
• Let A1 = area between z = 0.81 and z = 0
• Let A2 = area of the half curve
From the table,
A1 = 0.2910
A2 = 0.5
A = A2 – A1
= 0.5 - 0.2910
= 0.2090
✓The area to the right of z = 0.81 is 0.2090
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area to the left of z = 2.19

➢Find the area to the right of z = 0.87
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area to the left of z = 2.19

Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area to the left of z = 2.19

• Let A = area to the left of z = 2.19
• Let A1 = area of the half curve
• Let A2 = area between z = 0 and z = 2.19
From the table,
A1 = 0.5
A2 = 0.4857
A = A1 + A2
= 0.5 + 0.4857
= 0.9857
✓Hence, the area to the left of z = 2.19 is 0.9857
Normal Distribution

➢Find the area to the right of z = 0.87

Step 1. Sketch the curve
Normal Distribution

Step 2. Locate the area to the right of z = 0.87

• Let A = area to the right of z = 0.87
• Let A1 = area between z = 0.87 and z = 0
• Let A2 = area of the half curve
From the table,
A1 = 0.3078
A2 = 0.5
A = A2 – A1
= 0.5 - 0.3078
