Editorial Planning Sheet

Due Monday June 12th, beginning of class

Complete this planning sheet and submit it by June 12th. You must use these sources
in your final piece (along with others - check rubric for minimum)

1. What specific food-related issue will you be discussing?

Obesity → how pressure from parents/peers to lose weight actually creates weight
gain, why weight loss is not the straightforward solution to obesity that it seems.

2. What is your main idea (what are you arguing?)

Obesity is not an issue caused by “lack of discipline”, there are many external factors
(which I will be highlighting) and people should not be pressured to restrict their food intake
-and even stunt growth- just to lose weight. If changes in lifestyle, eating in moderation, and
positive self-view are emphasised, obesity rates will go down without a doubt.

3. How will you prove your main idea? List 3 points (reasons) below and outline how
you intend to prove them (sources)

Point/Reason 1: Weight loss is not the solution, lifestyle changes are

Data/Proof:
Fat camp survivor highlighting how weight loss was the only goal, calorie restriction was
emphasised, and campers were left traumatised and with an even worse relationship with
food just to put the weight back on.

Point/Reason 2: Social pressure to lose weight only exasperates the obesity epidemic.
Being bullied by peers or relatives leads to an increase in stress and turning to food to
cope for many.

Data/Proof:
Chances of obesity are increased significantly by stress, genetics, lack of sleep, and
certain medications(ex: diabetes).

Point/Reason 3: Obesity and mental health issues are linked

Data/Proof:

A sample of 960 girls found that girls who were unhappy with their bodies ate 1.5x more
and engaged in binge eating habits significantly more than those who were satisfied with
their body.
