“THE DEAD” BY JAMES JOYCE


In the story of “The Dead” by James Joyce, the line that have definition is “His soul swooned slowly as he heard the snow
falling faintly through the universe and faintly falling, like the descent of their last end, upon all the living and the dead.” This
lines expresses the main theme of the story, which is death and the inevitability.

“The dead” by James Joyce is a short story that revolves around gathering of family and friends on the eve of feast of the
epiphany. The main protagonist, Gabriel Conroy, attends the party with his wife, Gretta. Throughout the evening, Gabriel notices
that gretta seems preoccupied, and he became increasingly frustrated with her lack of attention towards him.

The chronology of the story of “The Dead” by James Joyce, they show the story begins with gabriel’s arrived at the
Morkan’s house for the party, where he is greeted warmly by his aunts, the sister kate and julia, and it ends with gabriel looking
out the window of the carriage, watching the snow falling and feeling a sense of resignation and acceptance.

The cause of the story is the death of a young boy, Michael furey, who had been passionately in love with Gretta Conroy,
the wife of the story’s protagonist,Gabriel Conroy.
The effect of Michael’s death ids that it triggers a deep reflection for Gabriel the nature of life, death and love.

Problem:The main character, Gabriel Conroy, feels disconnect from his wife and their social circle as he attends a holidays
party, leading to him to reflect on his own mortality and the meaning of life.
