Part III: READING COMPREHENSION

Direction: Read the passage given then answer questions correctly by selecting A, B, C, or D based on the
passage.

This following passage is for questions no. 46 – 50

For many years people believed that the cleverest animals after man were chimpanzees. Now, however,
there is proof that dolphins may be even cleverer than these big apes.
Although a dolphin lives in the sea it is not a fish. It is a mammal. It is in many ways, therefore, like a
human being.
Dolphins have a simple language. They are able to talk to one another. It may be possible for man to learn
how to talk to dolphins. But this will not be easy because dolphins cannot hear the kind of sounds man
can make. If man wants to talk to dolphins, therefore, he will have to make a third language which both
he and the dolphins can understand.
Dolphins are also very friendly towards man. They often follow ships. There are many stories of dolphins
guiding ships through difficult and dangerous waters.

46. Which animals do people think may be the cleverest?

a. Big apes
b. Chimpanzees
c. Mammals
d. Dolphins

47. What other beings are dolphins like in many ways?

a. Men
b. Fish

48. What have scientists discovered about dolphins?

a. They can speak to one another
b. Men can now talk to them
c. They can teach men their language

a. Most men do not speak English

Dogs are used to sniff out illegal immigrants at the Woodlands checkpoint. These illegal immigrants hide
in concealed compartments and the boots of lorries, buses, and cars. This mode of entry and exit to
Singapore has become a trend. About 150 people were caught hiding in 29 Malaysian vehicles in the past
year. Before that, there were only a few cases.

Several German shepherds and border collies, trained to search for victims trapped under rubble, have
been put on duty. By using these sniffer dogs, police aims to combat the business of smuggling people in
and out of Singapore.

Worried motorists were assured that using the dogs would not slow down traffic along the causeway as
each search would last less than two minutes.

A demonstration of the canine squad at work was given. In less than a minute, one of the dogs called Tog,
was able to find someone who had been hiding in a concealed compartment of a lorry.

There is no place on a vehicle where illegal immigrants can hide from the dogs. By nature, they are search
– crazy. They can sniff out human buried under a 30- feet pile of rubble.

The dogs are now used only at the causeway, but they may be used at the Tuas Second Link too, if the
need arises.

Albert lives with his parents and a brother in Woodlands. His father is a production manager, and his
mother, a part – time waitress. His brother, Jason, is a Primary Three pupil at Jiemin Primary. In the past,
Albert never liked to go out because he was always laughed at. He also used to be frequently bullied by
his schoolmates. He grew to hate school so much that he would refuse to go. Often, he went home feeling
sad and inferior.
Albert suffers from dwarfism. He is only 1,3 m tall although he is 15 years old. When he went out, people
would laugh at him. Even his schoolmates teased him. For years, Albert was afraid to step out of his
home without his parents.
He said ‘when I was in Primary Six, I would lie when my schoolmates asked me which level I was in. I
would tell them I was in Primary Three or Four so that they would not tease me.’
Going to the neighbourhood coffeeshop was painful enough; Orchard Road was an ordeal. The only place
to which he didn’t mind going was the nearby provision shore.
However, Albert has gained confidence since the society for the Physically Disabled (SPD) matched him
with a mentor, Mr Mike, an engineer. Now, they go shopping and have gone to the movies together twice.
He said ‘I used to stay at home and cry’. But now that I have found a friend to go out with, I am not so
depressed. Mike has encouraged me to be less self- conscious.
The situation has also improved since he entered secondary school. This is because his schoolmates are
more mature. He studies at Yishun Town Secondary School, which is close to his home. He has also
become less withdrawn since getting to know Mr Mike. They chat on the phone as well as email and

Did you see that?" Joe said to his friend Bill.

"You're a great shooter!" Bill caught the basketball and bounced it before throwing it again.

The ball flew into the net. "Bill, you never miss!" Joe said admiringly.

"Unless I'm in a real game," Bill complained.

"Then I miss all the time." Joe knew that Bill was right.

Bill performed much better when he was having fun with Joe in the school yard than he did when
he was playing for the school team in front of a large crowd.

"Maybe you just need to practice more," Joe suggested.

"But I practice all the time with you!" Bill objected.

He shook his head. "I just can't play well when people are watching me."

"You play well when I'm watching," Joe pointed out.

"That's because I've known you since we were five years old," Bill said with a smile.

"I'm just not comfortable playing when other people are around." Joe nodded and understood, but
he also had an idea.

why he needed them, everyone was happy to help.

Joe reminded the group to stay quiet as they all went toward the school's basketball court. As Joe
had hoped, Bill was still practicing basketball. He made five baskets in a row without noticing the
silent people standing behind him. "Hey, Bill!" Joe called out finally. Bill turned. A look of

This following passage is for questions no. 68 – 75

When another old cave is discovered in the south of France, it is not usually news. Rather, it is an
ordinary event. Such discoveries are so frequent these days that hardly anybody pays heed
to them. However, when the Lascaux cave complex was discovered in 1940, the world was
amazed. Painted directly on its walls were hundreds of scenes showing how people lived
thousands of years ago. The scenes show people hunting animals, such as bison or wild cats.
Other images depict birds and, most noticeably, horses, which appear in more than 300 wall
images, by far outnumbering all other animals.

Early artists drawing these animals accomplished a monumental and difficult task. They did not
limit themselves to the easily accessible walls but carried their painting materials to spaces that
required climbing steep walls or crawling into narrow passages in the Lascaux complex.
Unfortunately, the paintings have been exposed to the destructive action of water and temperature
changes, which easily wear the images away. Because the Lascaux caves have many entrances, air
movement has also damaged the images inside. Although they are not out in the open air, where
natural light would have destroyed them long ago, many of the images have deteriorated and are
barely recognizable. To prevent further damage, the site was closed to tourists in 1963, 23 years
after it was discovered.

68. Which title best summarizes the main idea of the passage?
a. Wild Animals in Art
b. Hidden Prehistoric Paintings
c. Exploring Caves Respectfully
d. Determining the Age of French Caves
69. Based on the passage, what is probably true about the south of France?
a. It is home to rare animals.
b. It has a large number of caves.
c. It is known for horse-racing events.
d. It has attracted many famous artists.
70. According to the passage, which animals appear most often on the cave walls?
