Project Titanicus – Problem Analysis

 Cost
o One of the biggest considerations in any project is the financial aspect. A project should
be effective as well as cost-efficient. However, striking this sensitive balance is very
difficult and very crucial for the success of a project. We should also take into
consideration the nature of this project. Focusing on the long term benefits of procuring
more costly options is, given the situation, a better choice than cheaper, below-average
options.
 Device Obsoleting
o As the field of I.T. evolves more and more every day, the rate of older technologies and
devices becoming obsolete has increased significantly. This is no exception in the field of
networking either. As we are spoiled for choice when it comes to devices and
technologies, we focused more on acquiring devices which hold more promise in
functionality and scalability more years down the line. The trade-off of this decision
however is that initial costs of deploying the network is higher, but in the long run, it is
cheaper than having to acquire newer devices at small intervals to deal with increasing
network demands.
 Hardware failure
o Nothing is immune to breakdown. Especially not in the I.T. field. Warranty is very
important when procuring high end, high performance devices. As usually they are vital
for the network functions of an organization and having to replace them by reacquiring
them is very costly. As such our solution is to verify that all devices we purchase have a
reasonable warranty attached to it.
 Bandwidth bottlenecks
o As network bandwidth requirements increase and hosts yearn for more and more
speed, the strain of network traffic increases upon the devices that are in a network
such as switches and routers. When the supply of bandwidth is not enough to keep up
with the demands, speed bottlenecks, delays, and lags tend to occur in network
communication. To counter this, it is necessary for the initial designing of the network to
have a very comprehensive and well thought out system of load balancing, accounting
for scaling with future expansions as well.
