Kino and Kinder: A family’s journey in the shadow of the Holocaust

Vivien Sieber

The Nazis stole my grandmother’s Vienna cinema before she escaped penniless to London.
She cared for girls saved on the Kindertransport in hostels in Tynemouth and Windermere
throughout the war. I have been privileged to meet some of these women who generously
shared their memories. They talk of leaving their families as young children, their time in the
hostel and later lives.
My father was interned on the Ilse of Man and Canada and the first enemy alien to serve in
the Royal Navy and intelligence.
This true history is told using contemporary dairies, manuscripts, heartrending memories of
the Kinder and research in Bruno, Vienna, and the UK. I use these rich historical resources as
a scaffold to build and tell the history of a twentieth century Jewish family and the
Holocaust. With over 80 unique historic photographs.
