1.0 PURPOSE
The purpose of this document is to define the technical requirements for the performance
and descriptive information for the Architectural Woodwork and finishes including
minimum requirements for building Basic Wood and Plastic Materials, Cabinets, Counter
Tops, and Shelves etc of the building to afford an aesthetically pleasing environment on
the Borouge 2 Project. It is provided to the CONTRACTOR for the specification and
definition of the COMPANY’S minimum requirements for the WORKS.
Any references to VENDOR define the requirements to be imposed on the VENDOR by
the CONTRACTOR.
2.1 DEFINITIONS
For the purposes of this Specification, the following definitions shall apply:
COMPANY – means Abu Dhabi Polymers Company Limited (Borouge) and its
successors in interest.
CONCESSION REQUEST – refers to a technical or other deviation requested by the
CONTRACTOR or VENDOR to COMPANY. Its submission is often linked to an
authorization to modify the design, to use, repair, recondition, reclaim, or release
materials, components or equipment already in progress or completely manufactured but
which does not meet or comply with COMPANY requirements. A CONCESSION
REQUEST is subject to COMPANY approval.
CONTRACTOR – means a party contracted to COMPANY to carry out work or services
to the Project.
GOODS – means any and all things, including but not limited to materials and equipment
(including spare parts) required to be incorporated in the WORK.
PROJECT – means the Borouge 2 Project at Ruwais, Abu Dhabi, UAE.
VENDOR – means any and all persons, firms, partnerships, companies, bodies entities or
a combination thereof including sub-vendors and suppliers, who are providing GOODS,
and the successors and assigns of such persons, firms, partnerships, companies, bodies,
entities or a combination thereof.
Shall and Must – means a mandatory requirement.
In addition supplementary definitions are contained in Article 1 of the AGREEMENT.
2.2 ABBREVIATIONS
UAE United Arab Emirates
The edition or revision of the Reference Documents shall be the edition current at the
EFFECTIVE DATE of the AGREEMENT.
CONTRACTOR shall advise COMPANY of any changes to Reference Documents after
the EFFECTIVE DATE. CONTRACTOR shall comply with COMPANY instruction to
comply with any changed Referenced Documents.
CONTRACTOR shall advise of conflict among any Reference Documents and any
technical specification, and COMPANY will determine which shall govern.
8.0 DOCUMENTATION
CONTRACTOR and VENDOR shall comply with the requirements of the “Procedure
for Document and Drawing Format” BPM-GG-03-005, “Document Numbering
Procedure” BPM-GG-03-001 and “Document Issuing Procedure CONTRACTORS”
BPM-GG-03-008.
10.0 DESIGN
10.1 STANDARDS
10.1.1 Construction Standard and Concealed Lumber
Conform to the latest requirements of the Department of Commerce Product Standard PS
20 and the Simplified Practice Recommendation SPR-16.
10.1.2 Finish Lumber
Conform to the AWI Quality Standards.
10.2 GRADES
Conform to the grading rules of the VENDOR’S Association under whose rules the
lumber is produced.
11.0 MILLWORK
11.1 COLOR/SAMPLES
Colours of the laminated plastic shall be selected by the COMPANY from the
VENDOR’S standard colours.
Submit 300 mm (12-inch) by 300 mm (12-inch) sample panel and showing each piece of
members, molding and counter tops.
11.2 MATERIALS
11.2.1 Wood Materials
Softwood Lumber: PS 20; graded in accordance with AWI Custom, average moisture
content of 8 percent (8%).
11.2.2 Panel Materials
1) Softwood Plywood: PS 1; graded in accordance with AWI custom, average
moisture content of 8 percent (8%)
2) Wood Particleboard: PS 1; AWI standard, composed of wood chips, medium
density, made with water resistant adhesive; of grade to suit application; sanded
faces, located as follows:
• Door and Drawer Fronts, Drawer Construction
• Not for shelf use
3) Hardboard: ANSI A135.4; Pressed wood fibre with resin binder, standard grade, 6
mm (1/4 inch) thick, smooth two sides, located as follows:
• Drawer Bottoms
• Gables and Backs
11.3 FABRICATION
Shop assemble casework for delivery to site in units easily handled and to permit passage
through building openings.
Cap exposed plastic laminate finish edges with material of same finish and pattern.
Door and Drawer Fronts: 19 mm (3/4 inch) thick; flush style.
When necessary to cut and fit on site, provide materials with ample allowance for
cutting. Provide trim for scribing and site cutting.
Apply plastic laminate finish in full uninterrupted sheets consistent with manufactured
sizes. Fit corners and joints hairline; secure with concealed fasteners. Locate counter
butt joints minimum 610 mm (2 feet) from sink cut-outs.
Apply laminate backing sheet to reverse side of wood laminate finished surfaces.
Provide cut-outs for plumbing fixtures, inserts, appliances, outlet boxes, fixtures and
fittings. Verify locations of cut-outs from on-site dimensions. Seal cut edges.
11.4 INSTALLATION
11.4.1 Inspection
The installer shall examine substrates scheduled to receive the units for unevenness,
irregularities, and dampness that would affect quality and execution of work under which
this work is to be performed and notify CONTRACTOR, in writing, of conditions
detrimental to the proper completion of the work. Do not proceed with work until
unsatisfactory conditions are corrected. Beginning of work shall mean the installer
accepts substrates and conditions.
11.4.2 Placement
a. Install and secure casework in place; rigid, plumb, and level strictly comply
with VENDOR’S instructions and recommendations
b. Use fixture attachments in concealed locations for wall mounted components
c. Use concealed joint fasteners to align and secure adjoining cabinet units
d. Carefully scribe casework abutting other components, with maximum gaps of 1
mm (1/32 inch). Do not use additional overlay trim for this purpose
e. Secure cabinet to floor using appropriate angles and anchorage
f. Countersink anchorage devices at exposed locations. Conceal with solid wood
plugs of species to match surrounding wood; finish flush with surrounding
surfaces.
