Topic: Cell cycle: Binary Fission

Introduction: Binary fission is the asexual reproduction of a cell split into two new ‘daughter’ cells.
This means that in bacteria, it will be duplicated more and more as it reproduces each time.

Question: What amount of light affects the growth rate of bacteria?

IV: The amount of light (more or less)

DV: The amount of bacteria that grows in different amounts of light

Control: Bacteria

Data: Qualitive and Quantitive

Aim: The aim of this experiment is to find out what varieties of light affect the growth rate of
bacteria.

Hypothesis: It is predicted that when put into a higher intensity of light, the bacteria will grow
rapidly compared to when its placed in a dark and dim location.

Materials:

- 4x Petri dish
- Protective equipment (gloves, lab coat etc.)
- Tape
- Marker
- Cotton swabs

Method:

1. Go to the toilets and swipe the cotton swabs onto the soap dispenser
2. Obtain a decent amount of bacteria onto the cotton swabs and place it into the petri dishes
3. Close the lids of the petri dishes securely and come back to the classroom
4. Tape the outside of the petri dishes so no bacteria can escape or enter
5. Place 1 petri dish in an area of full sunlight, 1 in an area of a little amount light, 1 in complete
darkness and 1 in an open area with no bacteria
6. Record results over the upcoming days to see which petri dish has grown the most bacteria

Risk Assessment:

Risk: Prevention:
Bacteria could come into contact with your Wear protective gear and don’t touch or
respiratory system, therefore could end in you breathe the bacteria in.
getting sick.
