LABORATORY REPORT #1

Standard Test Method for Particle-Size Analysis of Soils (ASTM D422)

I. Objectives
This test is performed to determine the percentage of different grain sizes
contained within a soil. The sieve analysis is performed to determine the
distribution of the coarser, larger-sized particles. A particle distribution
graph is also presented to determine the Coefficient of Uniformity and
Coefficient of Curvature.

II. Instruments
 Brush
 Complete set of Sieves
 Digital weighing scale
 Splitter

III. Procedures
1. Split the fine aggregate sample using splitter.
2. Make sure the fine aggregate is dry. Oven dry if wet.
3. Weigh approximately 2500g of fine aggregates to be sieved.
4. Weigh and record each sieve (sieve nos. 4, 8, 10, 16, 20, 30, 40, 60,
80, 100, and 200) and pan.
5. Stack the set of sieves (sieve nos. 4, 8, 10, 16, 20, 30, 40, 60, 80, 100,
and 200) and pan.
6. Pour the sample of fine aggregate to the stack of sieves.
7. Shake the stack of sieves with fine aggregate sample carefully for 10
minutes.
8. After shaking the set of sieves with fine aggregate sample, weigh each
sieve with the retained fine aggregate sample.
9. Calculate the gathered data.
