1 SCOPE
The clarity of completion fluids is described through measurement of the fluid turbidity. Turbidity is a measure
of the light scattering properties of a clear, (or nearly clear) fluid and is measured in Nephelometric Turbidity
Units (NTU).
Turbidity in brines may be caused by the presence of suspended insoluble or immiscible particulate matter, or
discolouration caused by contaminants. As high turbidity readings often relate to the presence of
contaminants, brine clarity is commonly used to determine quality of the completion fluid, whether as received
after transportation, on returning to surface after circulation round the well, or when blending two or more
fluids.

2 EQUIPMENT
1 x Turbidity meter kit containing :
1 x Turbidity meter.
Turbidity Standards
Turbidity Tubes
Deionised Water
1 x Filter Cartridge and filters (optional)

3 PROCEDURE
3.1 Calibration
1. Select the turbidity standard closest to the suspected value of the sample.
2. Switch the selection knob to the appropriate range.
3. Fill a turbidity tube with the standard. Wipe tube with a lint-free tissue. Apply drop of silicone oil and
spread across tube with a lint-free tissue.
4. Insert tube into the chamber. Calibrate reading to standard.

3.2 Test Sample

1. 3.2.1 Fill a clean sample container with at least 50 mls of the sample to be tested.
2. Set container aside and allow sample to equilibrate to air temperature, and to let gasses escape. Note -Do
not allow dusts or any other airborne contaminants contact the sample.
3. Rinse an empty turbidity tube with sample. Fill turbidity tube to neck with test sample. Note - Pour sample
down the side of the tube to avoid creating air bubbles.
4. Wipe tube with a lint free tissue. Apply a drop of silicone oil and spread across tube with a lint-free tissue.
5. Insert tube into chamber. Select appropriate NTU range. As soon as reading stabilizes , record reading as
NTU.
6. If the sample has a turbidity reading of greater than the maximum that the meter can read, the sample
must be diluted with turbidity free water before being tested. Multiply the result by appropriate factor.

Turbidity Free Water can be made by filtering deionized water through a 0.45
micron filter paper in a clean, dry container.

4 CALCULATIONS
Not applicable

5 MISCELLANEOUS
1. Turbidity Standards. - Accurate to 1 % if the following procedures are observed.
2. Once the seal on the bottle is broken, the standard is good for 9 months, and must be stored between 10
and 40 deg C. The standards are good indefinitely prior to opening if stored under the same conditions.
3. Never put any unused standard or other possible contaminant into the bottle.
4. Do not open the standards in a dusty environment, and guard against dust and other contaminants
entering the bottle while opened.
5. Rinse turbidity tube with standard before filling.
6. Cap the turbidity tube and standard bottle immediately after filling.
7. Turbidity should not be used alone when determining solids content of brine. High NTU readings do not
always equate to high solids content.
