WHAT IS IYMS?
Since 2006, the International Youth Media Summit (IYMS) has
been building bridges – real and virtual – to connect the young
people of the world, helping them to better understand and
appreciate the diverse cultures and peoples that inhabit
the planet.

IYMS’s signature event is a two-week annual Summit attended by

youth activists, filmmakers, storytellers, artists and journalists from
all over the world. At the Summit, these young people tackle some
of the world’s most challenging issues to advance the Sustainable
Development Goals (SDGs). They use filmmaking, one of the most
powerful tools we possess to affect hearts and change minds.

WHAT HAS IYMS DONE

FOR THE WORLD?
Since 2006, over 1,000 students and educators from
66 countries have participated in the Summit, producing 112
short films about Discrimination, Environment, Health, Pover-
ty, Violence, Women’s Rights, Youth Empowerment. These films
have been seen by hundreds of thousands across the globe,
touching lives from living rooms in Afghanistan, to remote
classrooms in Nepal, to computer training centers in
Sierra Leone, to television screens in Bolivia, to film festivals in
India, to City Halls in Germany and even at various
United Nations Offices.

IYMS has organized small regional Summits, collaborative

film projects, media screenings, community celebrations and
online educational programs. It has conducted training and
production programs for UNESCO and various other UN
global nonprofit organizations. It has created an ever-expanding
network of young people who model how the world can work
collaboratively to solve problems that affect us all. IYMS con-
tinues to give the world hope that we can overcome tribal
differences and generations of hatred to bring peace and health
to our planet.

“This experience was one of the most enlightening moments in my

life and also gave me hope for the future of our war-torn planet.”
- IYMS South African Delegate
THE SUMMIT HOST
Teen International Media Exchange (dba International Youth Media Summit), in partnership with Kultur i Halland, a cultural
organization under the Swedish Government, are jointly organizing the 2022 Summit at the Katrinebergs Folkhögskola. Run
by Region Halland and one of the oldest folk high schools in Sweden, it has great living accommodations, a film theatre and
all the film equipment and studio spaces required for the Summit. Over 50 delegates from all over the world will participate
in the 12-day Summit at the school, which is near the town of Falkenberg.
HOW DOES IYMS HELP YOUNG PEOPLE
CREATE CHANGE?
IYMS puts young people together with issue experts from academia,
civil society and activist groups, who reveal the latest advances in
combating the world’s social problems. The youth are then trained by profes-
sionals in advanced filmmaking/storytelling skills to deliver their important
messages in powerful ways. Communication experts help them develop
workshop guides and podcasts to reinforce the messages of their films,
engage their audiences and lead others to changes in attitudes
and behaviors.

Most importantly, the youth come together and experience work-

ing collaboratively across cultures. The most compelling proof of
the power of IYMS is in the stories of conflicts overcome, struggles
shared, and life-long friendships developed. These are the stories,
brought back home with their films, that offer the hope of change.

“Being at that Summit made me realize that we can only make change if we
come together. Where we are from no longer seemed important because we
all knew where we were going—forward.”
IYMS Delegate from the USA.

FACES OF COURAGE: TRANSFORMING A POST-PANDEMIC WORLD

PROBLEMS WE WILL ADDRESS

The COVID-19 pandemic has created even more
inequalities than before. The health system in the
developing world is on the verge of crashing. The cases
of violence, poverty, discrimination and climate crisis are
rising every day. People are suffering and living ineveryday
fear. We need to address people’s fears, insecurities and
feelings of hopelessness in the face of these overwhelming
problems.

OBJECTIVE
This 2022 Summit will bring 70 youth delegates and advisors
together at the Katrinebergs Folkhögskola in Falkenberg,
Sweden and explore their own experiences of isolation, fear
and increasingly fractured societies. The delegates will be
challenged to discover the most courageous steps that can
be taken to bring individuals and countries together to heal.
They must find compelling ways to demonstrate the path
forward – a courageous, hopeful blueprint for others to
follow.

GOALS
» To find encouragement from the stories of others who
have overcome adversity during this time
» To find in the episodes of “SANATIONE”, produced
around the world during the height of the COVID-19,
real-life evidence of what needs to be healed
» To provide experts that can give insights into these
problems and possible solutions through the
perspective of our seven issues
» To learn from professional filmmakers and
communication experts how to create the most
impactful messages using media as a tool.
» To work collaboratively on seven issue films, workshop
guides and podcasts to share courageous steps forward
» To organize post-Summit activities: school campaigns,
media literacy activities and social media campaigns
globally.
HOW WILL THIS SOLVE THE PROBLEMS?
We will use our media pieces and outreach campaigns to connect to others in our
communities. We will lead by example, demonstrating that facts and wisdom can be tools that lead to
changes in attitudes and daily behavior. We need to instill the will in others to become change agents
and collaborators in achieving what we now see as impossible, but together will make possible.

On August 5th, the delegates will screen the final seven 90-second short films that address the social
issues and offer changes that will improve the post-pandemic world. Each film will also have a work-
shop guide to use in classroom settings, as well as a podcast that highlights the learning from experts
and the experiences of the delegates.

YOUR
SUPPORT
WHY DO YOU NEED TO SUPPORT?
Nobody can solve the world’s biggest problems alone. For the past 16 years, IYMS has continued to thrive with minimal
overhead and until recently, no paid staff members. Finally we are able to hire one full-time person and several part-time
people. This has enabled us to increase our outreach to UN agencies, NGOs, possible delegates and begin the development
of Regional Centers around the world.

We will increase our impact by increasing the number of storytellers and activists working in all corners of the world to create
stories that ignite change. By working with IYMS and supporting our activities in your corner of the world, you will help us
reach more and more young people every year, giving them the tools to become change makers.

made films around the subjects of conquering
violent extremism and peacebuilding. Funded by a
grant from USAID.

UNESCO / Bangkok; filming some of the participants in
the indigenous people/COVID 19 project. Some of this
work was used in SANATIONE.

climate change.
ONGOING
PROJECTS
SANATIONE: A TIME FOR HEALING
Sanatione is a Latin word for healing, and became the title for IYMS Films’ second project,
a web series. In 2020, COVID-19 caused a world-wide pandemic. It infected and killed
millions. It forced lockdowns that brought much of the global economy to a halt, with
businesses closed and jobs lost. We have come to realize this virus might be a test for
humanity, a wake-up call for change.

As the virus spread, a group of filmmakers and storytellers from 22 countries did what
filmmakers do. They grabbed their cameras to capture the lives and stories around them.
These first-person heart-felt stories filmed in real time as the pandemic unfolds around
the world are woven together to reveal the many facets of who we human beings are
and of what we are made. We see stories of suffering, isolation, struggle and coping and
also stories of kindness, and moments of unexpected joy.

SANATIONE holds up a mirror to humanity’s struggles, but also shines a beacon, lighting
the way to a transformed world. Currently, 19 episodes have been completed, and more
are in production. We are also developing a feature length documentary film about the
SANATIONE filmmakers. A special screening will be organised at the 2023 IYMS.

‘‘JOHN’’
JOHN is the feature film debut of Pakistani filmmaker Babar Ali, a long-time IYMS
contributor and director of Pari of Pokhara. IYMS Films is co-producing with Ali’s Vaasil
Productions.

JOHN is a romantic crime drama that tells the love story of a young Christian janitor,
John, and a free-spirited maid, Maria. The brutal streets of Karachi and discrimination
against minorities create a trap for John, who fears he will be left alone and in poverty.
He is swept into the world of crime by Daud, a charismatic target killer who befriends
John, promising financial security as he lures him into becoming an accessory to
murders. The pursuit of love and John’s secret life of crime go hand in hand while we
explore the complexities of the mean streets of Karachi, during a time of mass target
killings by hired gangsters prompted by political, ethnic and religious conflicts.

In the film, writer/director Ali examines the causes of the violence he witnessed as a
young child. He shows us innocent young people who are led to a life of crime when
damaged by the toxic mixture of poverty, discrimination and despair. JOHN is currently
in post-production and will be screened at IYMS 2022.
