Lesson The procedure of Basic Manicure
1 and Pedicure Services

What Is It

Before you proceed in cleaning nails, it is important to do the following:

▪ Consult client on desired nail service activity and specific requirements and
consultation record is agreed and signed.
▪ Check and analyzed the client's hand nail structure and condition.

If you found out that there are signs of infection such as swelling, redness, and
presence of pus when you examine the fingernails and toenails, do not perform
nail services, but instead refer that person to a physician.

Pre-Service Procedure

A. Cleaning and Disinfecting

1. Wear gloves while doing this pre-service procedure to prevent contamination
of the implements with your hands. It is also a way to protect the hand from
strong chemicals in the disinfectant solution.
2. Wash all the implements thoroughly with soap and warm water. Brush
grooved items as possible, and open hinged implements to scrub the area.
3. Rinse away all traces of soap with warm running water, if not removed, it
affects the effectiveness of the disinfectants. Dry implements with a clean
towel or allow them to air-dry on a clean towel. Once done, they are ready for
disinfection.
4. Immersed cleaned implements in a suitable disinfection container containing
disinfectant for the required time which is usually 10 minutes. Do not forget
to open hinged implements before immersing them in the disinfectant
solution. Try to avoid skin contact by using tongs or wearing gloves.
5. Remove implements, rinse, and dry them thoroughly.
6. Store disinfected implements in a clean, dry container until needed.
7. Remove gloves, wash your hands with soap, rinse, and dry with a clean towel.
8. Finally, clean and disinfect the manicure table with disinfectant.

4
B. Manicure Table Setup

1. Wipe the tabletop with cotton saturated with 70% alcohol.

2. The drawer of the manicure table should face the manicurist.
3. Place creams, lotions, and nail polishes on the left side of the table.
4. Place nippers, scissors, tweezer, and orangewood sticks in the sanitizer. Place
it on the left side of the table.
5. Place alcohol, antiseptic, and jar of cotton on the right side of the table.
6. The nail file, emery board, and buffer are placed on the right side of the table.
7. Attach a small plastic bag to the side of the table with tape. This is used for
disposing of used supplies.
8. Place a clean cushion in the center of the table with the end of the towel
towards the manicurist.
9. Fill a finger bowl with warm soapy water. Place it on the right side of the table.

C. Greet Client
1. Greet your client with a smile, introduce yourself if you have not met, and
shake hands. Ask for the consultation card he or she filled out in the reception
area, especially if the client is new.
2. Escort your client to the handwashing area and show them the proper way.
Once you have done the demonstration, hand your client a clean brush and
let her wash her hand.
3. Show your client to your worktable and ensure the client's safety and comfort
before and during the entire process.
4. Discuss the information on the consultation card to determine the best
procedure for the service.

5
Post-Service Procedure

A. Advise Clients and Promote Products

1. Proper home care will make sure that the client’s nails look nice until he or
she returns for another service.
2. Depending on the service provided, there may be several retail products that
you should recommend to the client to take home. This is the time to do so.
Explain why they are important and how to use them.

B. Schedule Next Appointment and Thank Client

1. Escort the client to the front desk to schedule the next appointment and to
collect payment for the service.
2. Be sure to thank the client before he leaves the salon, and you return to your
station.
3. Record on the client consultation card all service information, products used,
observations, and retail recommendations. Then keep the form in its
designated place.
C. Prepare Work Area and Implements for Next Client
1. Clean and disinfect your manicure table and properly dispose of all used
materials.
2. Disinfect implements. Reset the manicure table with a disinfected tool.
