B. Motivation:
Concept:
Knowing how to write an essay is very important for students like
you to be able to perform the activities, written works, and performance
tasks required in your English subject. The skills that you will acquire,
and hone will not only be useful in school but also in your work in the
future.
Essay varies in form and purpose – one of its kinds is informative.
An informative writing aims to inform or educate the readers about a
certain topic, especially a new idea. It does not intend to argue with the
writer’s viewpoint or to persuade the readers to do a certain action.
Further, it uses credible sources and some evidence to explain the topic.
In this lesson, you will learn the techniques on how to write an
informative essay.
See the dialogue below
C. Discussion:
INFORMATIVE WRITING TECHNIQUES
1. Choose a topic.
a. Interesting to both you and your reader.
b. Not too broad or too narrow
Example: Advantages of COVID-19 Vaccine
c. With enough reliable sources of evidence
2. Make a plan for writing.
a. Use a traditional outline or graphic organizers in identifying the
thesis statement and the details that will support it.
b. Gather information online or from the library and analyze facts
and details.
3. Identify the thesis statement.
a. The thesis statement, a basis for the whole essay, consists of 1
or 2 sentences that familiarize the reader with the topic.
b. It should be clear and precise.
Example: Recycled art gives garbage new life and allows artist
to express themselves in unique ways.
4. Structure your essay using three main parts.
a. Introductory paragraph includes a general introduction followed
by a thesis statement. It should grab the reader’s attention.
b. Body paragraph expounds the thesis statement and includes a
topic sentence which is supported by detailed examples and
relevant evidence. It may consist of more than one paragraph.
c. Concluding paragraph summarizes the main points of the essay
and restates the thesis statement. It should not introduce new
evidence or information.
5. Connect the paragraphs and other related ideas using transitional device to show
addition, contrast, similarity, etc.
Example:
The concept of fairness is central to understanding plagiarism.
Fairness means being fair both to yourself and others. Moreover,
everybody both gives and receives their proper due, and nobody has
anything to complain about. For example, an incident involving
unfairness could be taking someone else’s work and passing it off as
your own. As a result, the person whose work has been taken receives
no recognition or acknowledgment for their research and thinking.
Furthermore, writers who plagiarize are not being fair to themselves
either because they are not developing their own independent academic
skills. Therefore, students who do their own work with due
acknowledgement of the work of others should develop their own
academic skills and self- confidence far more than those who merely
misuse the work of others.
