B. Motivation:
Socratic Method:
 Argumentation is defined as a reasoned, logical way of demonstrating
that the writer’s position, belief, or conclusion is valid. (National Governors
Association Center for Best Practices and Council of Chief State School
Officers, 2010). When writing an argumentative essay, the purpose is to
persuade the readers. How will you convince your readers to take your stand?

 Directions: Read and study important updates about coronavirus. Would you
recommend having face-to-face classes in 2021? Write a review that addresses this
question and support your position with evidence from news articles. Follow the
template below.

2. Discussion:
LANGUAGE FEATURES OF AN ARGUMENTATIVE TEXT
1. Modal verbs are used as auxiliary or helping verbs with special functions.
• Shall indicates simple futurity and obligation.
• Should expresses past obligation.
• Will expresses simple futurity and willingness.
• Would expresses invitation or past possibility.
• Might is used in reported speech for past time.
• May expresses future possibilities mixed with doubt and uncertainty
(Almonte, 2015).
2. Modal adverbs are often added to modal verbs to provide additional
meaning. Examples:
Modal adverbs are in bold. Modal verbs are underlined.
• Surely you can't have the cake and eat it too!
• I might just leave an hour earlier.
• She could easily have been hurt by those words.
• You really shouldn’t have gone to the concert without your
parents’ permission (Gareth Pitchford’s Primary Resources)
3. Attitudes expressed through evaluative language such as:
• Ethos (ethical appeal): the source's credibility and
trustworthiness; the speaker/author establishes authority
• Logos (logical appeal): the logical reasoning used to support a
claim; facts, examples, statistics; inductive or deductive reasoning

• Pathos (emotional appeal): emotional, passionate or
motivational engagement; vivid language; sensory details (Glass,
2014).
