Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a highly contagious viral disease that affects cloven-
hoofed animals such as cattle, pigs, goats, and sheep. The disease can cause significant
economic losses and animal welfare concerns due to the high morbidity rates associated with
FMD.

The FMD virus belongs to the Picornaviridae family and is easily transmitted through contact
with infected animals or contaminated objects such as feed, water, and equipment. Although
the disease is not a threat to humans, it can have devastating impacts on livestock
populations.

Symptoms of FMD in livestock typically include fever, blisters, and ulcers on the tongue,
gums, and inside the mouth. The disease can also cause lameness and a reluctance to move,
which can lead to weight loss and decreased milk production. The severity of the symptoms
may vary depending on the age, breed, and health of the animal.

Preventing the spread of FMD is crucial to avoid outbreaks and minimize the economic
impact on the livestock industry. Proper biosecurity protocols, vaccination, and movement
restrictions are essential measures in preventing the spread of the disease.

Biosecurity measures, such as quarantining new arrivals, disinfecting equipment and

vehicles, and controlling access to the farm, can significantly reduce the risk of introducing
the virus to the herd. Vaccination can also provide protection against the disease, although it
may not prevent all strains of the virus.

Proper education and training are also critical to preventing and controlling FMD outbreaks.
Farmers and livestock handlers should be aware of the symptoms of the disease and the
importance of reporting any suspected cases to the relevant authorities.

In conclusion, Foot and Mouth Disease is a significant threat to the livestock industry.
Understanding the causes, symptoms, and prevention measures is critical in controlling the
spread of the disease and protecting livestock populations. By implementing proper
biosecurity protocols and vaccination, we can minimize the impact of FMD and ensure the
health and welfare of our animals.
