Legal service market in Vietnam in the relationship with Artificial Intelligence (AI)

Human society's technology has recently advanced in a direction that no one could have
predicted. Artificial intelligence was invented and quickly mastered in many scientific fields
such as computing, information gathering, translation-interpretation and painting, music, etc.
Law and legal-related disciplines are no exception to that trend. Many insiders in the legal sector
claimed that Chat GPT and Notion AI, among other clever AI technologies, are helpful to them
with many aspects of their jobs. AI can support them in preparing documents, researching legal
cases, and answering the demand of the customers. Providing a normal person the knowledge in
legal matters has never been so easy that much. However, several experts, not just in the legal
arena, have stated that these AIs still have gaps. Therefore, with this growth and limit, which will
be the path of AI and its position in the Vietnamese legal sector in the near future?
1. About Vietnam Legal industry:
A few years ago, using legal consulting services in business was only rated as a fad phenomenon
of some Vietnam enterprises. But after Vietnam became a member of many international trade
organizations and partnerships, it brought a lot of change and also opportunities for Vietnam's
law market. Increasingly foreign investment in Vietnam as a result of which Vietnamese
businesses must quickly "go public," get ready, and reorganize themselves to comply with global
standards. To guarantee that company activities always abide by the law, to support development,
or to settle conflicts, they all require legal assistance from attorneys. Vietnamese people are also
gradually becoming richer and more knowledgeable, which means they require more personal
legal advice. Therefore, the demand for personal legal advice increases day by day. Both these
causes resulted in a large amount of internal demand in the Vietnamese law market nowadays.
At the present time and at least in the next 20 years, the pie constituting the legal services market
is still big enough for Vietnam Law Firms. (Phuoc & Associates, 2021).
However, reality shows that legal services in Vietnam have not met enough social requirements.
In Vietnam, the mechanism and legal environment have not been developed and are considered
to be a type of business. There also has not yet been a single legal document regulating their
types and determining the extent and scope of their subjects. (Nguyen, 2023).
Many people in Vietnam also tend to depend on the Internet firstly when they have to deal with a
lot of legal problems and so the status of the legal profession is not set up to its right position.
2. The dawn of chat GPT (and other AIs):
The emergence of artificial intelligence such as Chat GPT has also caused a lot of volatility in
Vietnamese law. In large corporate law firms, the staff will be cut down because it will have an
amount of work that GPT chat can support. As for legal advice, Chat GPT can completely
synthesize the best answer, from many sources and give readers a nearly-correct result. With the
situation that individual users tend to consult the Internet first before deciding whether to seek a
lawyer in Vietnam, legal consultants who do not have enough experience and skills will suffer a
lot of burdens.(Stepka, 2022)
Not only that, there is also no clear set of rules for AI activities. Content related to creative
rights, and intellectual property rights will be immediately and always targeted because no one is
responsible for AI's creation or AI's plagiarism. This can also be an aspect that lawyers will have
to face in the future.
3. How the people in the legal industry can counter this?
Actually, in theory, artificial intelligence software was invented with the main purpose to help
people. So people need to understand how to use tools to help themselves.
Well-trained using it, AI will be used for legal research, allowing law firms to find the best
arguments and cases quickly. It can automate some aspects of legal work such as document
review and transcription. In the near future, AI will be utilized to streamline and hasten the
discovery process, contract preparation and review, and legal research. Attorneys will be able to
find pertinent papers for their cases and reduce their reliance on manual document analysis. With
these capabilities, lawyers will have more time to focus on providing competent legal advice
tailored to each client's specific needs.
Finally, as someone who is committed to joining the Vietnamese legal industrialist, I just want to
say that we should clearly see our position and role as well as AI in real life. AI may be very
good, but it still has many problems and loopholes that the law cannot control. But it is still a
useful tool for law workers. By cultivating your own knowledge base to control what the AI
gives you and learning more instructions for use of it, you will surely succeed.
