Introduction

Blood transfusion is an important line of therapy

which can be life saving, so all measure are taken

to provide safe and effective transfusion. However

,transfusion should be avoided if possible and the

risks should be compared to the benefits before

blood is given to the patient.


Definition

Blood transfusion is the transfusion of the whole blood or its

component such as blood cells or plasma from one person to

another person.

Blood transfusion involves two procedure that is –

 Collection of blood from a donor

 Administration of blood to the recipient.

PACKED RED CELLSs

 Shelf life:35 days in (SAG-M (saline-adenine- glucose-mannitol)

 Storage temp: 2 —6 Degree celsius

 Volume: 250- 350 ml and has a hematocrit of 50-70%.

 Contents : red cells- 65-80%, Plasma 20-35%,Some platelets, white blood cell

and anticoagulant preservative solutions

 Effect: I unit RBC raise Hct by 3% and Hb by Ig/dl

 Indication:

 Blood Volume Loss>30%

 Hg%<8gm
Frozen RBCS

 Separated from RBCS using glycerol for protection and frozen

 Can be stored for 10 years

 Must be used within 24hr of thawing

 Washing with saline solution to remove most of WBCS and plasma

proteins

 Indication:

 Auto transfusion :rare donors for patients with alloantibodies

CRYOPRECIPITATE

 Shelf life: frozen—I year At: 20 degree or less


thawed : 6 hours At: 37 degree
 Volume- 10 to 20 ml
 Cryoprecipitate contain Fibrinogen ,Factor5,8&13, and VW factor.
 Indication:
o Hemophilia
o Von Willebrand's disease
o DIC (Fibrinogen deficiency)
 Transfusion criteria : ABO compatibility not required must be completed
within 20-30 minutes
