Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70
Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)
2. Answering the question in Part-A is compulsory
3. Answer any THREE Questions from Part-B
*****
PART –A (22 Marks)
1 a) Explain briefly the importance of artificial variables. [3M]
b) What do you mean by a non-degenerate basic feasible solution of a transportation [4M]
problem?
c) Explain the group replacement problem. [4M]
d) What are the characteristics of game theory? [4M]
e) What are the assumptions of the basic inventory model? How does each affect the [4M]
model?
f) Describe the recursive equation approach to solve dynamic programming problems. [3M]
PART –B (48 Marks)
2 a) Discuss the various phases in solving an OR problem. [6M]
b) Solve by Big –M method: Minimize Z =2x1+x2 [10M]
Subject to 3x1+ x2= 3
4x1+ 3x2≥ 6
x1+ 2x2≤ 4
x1, x2≥ 0.
3 a) Find the optimum solution to the transportation problem given in the table below for [8M]
which the cost, origin-availabilities, and destination-requirements are given:
D1 D2 D3 D4 Supply
O1 5 3 6 2 19
O2 4 7 9 1 37
O3 3 4 7 5 34
Demand 16 18 31 25 90
b) We have five jobs each of which must go through two machines in the order AB, [8M]
processing times are given in the table below:
Job No 1 2 3 4 5
Machine A 10 2 18 6 20
Machine B 4 12 14 16 8

4 a) A certain transport company operating in Rajasthan has a fleet of 20 trucks. A truck [8M]
costs Rs. 175000. From last experience, the transporting company has the following
information:
Age of truck in Years 1 2 3 4 5 6
Operating Cost (Rs.) 15600 20000 27000 45000 85000 98000

What is the optimum replacement period?
b) Discuss in brief the replacement procedure for the items that deteriorate with time. [8M]

5 a) A game of matching coins with two players. Suppose A wins one unit of value when [8M]
there are two heads, wins nothing when there are two tails and losses ½ unit of value
when there are one head and one tail. Determine the payoff matrix, the best strategies
for each player and the value of the game.
b) Briefly explain the important characteristics of the queuing system. [8M]
