(Mechanical Engineering)
Time: 3 hours Max. Marks: 70

Note: 1. Question Paper consists of two parts (Part-A and Part-B)

2. Answer ALL the question in Part-A
3. Answer any FOUR Questions from Part-B
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
PART –A (14 Marks)
1. a) What are the applications of Operations Research?
[2M]
b) Why does Vogel’s approximation method provide a good initial feasible
solution? [2M]
c) State the examples of group replacement concept.
[2M]
d) What are the objectives of inventory control?
[3M]
e) What are the different costs that are involved in the inventory problem?
[3M]
f) What is the basic principle in dynamic programming?
[2M]
PART –B (56 Marks)
2. a) A paper mill produces 2 grades of paper namely X and Y. Because of raw [8M]
material restrictions, it cannot produce more than 400 tonnes of grade X and
300 tonnes of grade Y in a week. There are 160 production hours in a week. It
requires 0.2 hours and 1.4 hours to produce a tone of product X and Y
respectively, with corresponding profits of Rs.200/- and Rs.500/- per ton.
Formulate the above LPP to maximize the profit.
b) What is a model? List the various classification schemes of Operations [6M]
Research models
3. a) Determine the sequence which minimizes the total time for processing five [10M]
jobs on three machines A, B and C in the order A, B and C. Processing in hours
are given in Table:
Job 1 2 3 4 5
Machine A 8 10 6 7 11
Machine B 5 6 2 3 4
Machine C 4 9 8 6 5
b) Explain Johnson’s algorithm for processing ‘n’ jobs through two machines for [4M]
a given machine order.
4. a) Briefly explain about the replacement policy of items which deteriorate with [7M]
time.
b) The maintenance cost and resale value per year of a machine whose purchase [7M]
price is Rs.7000/- is given below:
Year 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
Annual 900 1200 1600 2100 2800 3700 4700 5900
maintenance
cost in Rs.
Resale value 400 2000 1200 600 500 400 400 400
5. a) Discuss the step-by-step procedure of application of principle of dominance for [6M]
solving game theory problem.
b) In a departmental store one cashier is there to serve the customers. And the [8M]
customers pick up their needs by themselves the arrival rate is 9 customers for
every 5 minutes and the cashier can serve 10 customers in 5 minutes.
Assuming poisons arrival rate and exponential distribution for service rate.
Find following:
(i) Average number of customers in the system
(ii) Average number of customers in the queue of average queue
length?
(iii) Average time a customer spends in the systems
(iv) Average time a customer waits before being served
6. a) Find the optimum order quantity for a product or which the price breaks are as [10M]
follows:
Quantity Unit cost(Rs.)
0≤q1≤100 Rs.20/- per unit
100≤q2≤200 Rs.18/- per unit
200≤q3 Rs.16/- per unit
The monthly demand for the product is 400 units. The storage cost is 20% of
the unit cost of the product and the cost of ordering is Rs.25/-.
b) Write a note on VED analysis. [4M]
7. a) By using the dynamic programming problem method, solve the given linear [8M]
programming problem:
Maximize Z=8X1+7X2
Subject to
2X1+X2 < 8
5X1+2X2 < 15
X1,X2 ≥ 0
b) What is simulation? Explain the types of simulation and its use. [6M]
