Right Clicking on elements (points, line segment, seam lines, slits, internal lines, drill holes,
internal/external darts, apex points etc.) brings up a context sensitive popup menu. The popup menu
contains commands to allow various operations on the selected element such as changing properties or
adding and deleting points/drill holes.
The Metric System or American standard unit measurement can be changed under the Setting-
Preference pull down menu. Inch measurements can be displayed in Decimal Format by checking
the Display Inches in Decimal option in the preference window. Otherwise, measurements are
displayed in fractional format (for example 1/8 inch).
You can display/hide Intermediate Points on the outline of patterns by clicking on the
apostrophe/tilde (‘/~) button on the keyboard. The intermediate points may stay visible by
checking/un-checking the Intermediate Points Display option under the View pull down menu or
the View Filter window.
Help videos are available directly from the program for all Tools. Simply click on the Help (?) button
on the top toolbar followed by another click on the command (toolbar buttons or menu commands.
There are 3 levels of selection methods: Group selection, Section selection and Point selection. A
group is either a pattern or a group of external lines and shape that have been grouped using the group
tools. A section is defined as a line segment surrounded by 2 grading points. The group selection
method is performed with a rubber-box selection with the Control key depressed. Any group/pattern
touched by the selection box is completely selected. This mode of selection is useful when certain
operation must be performed on the entire patterns/groups. Good example might be to move/
rotate/flip/delete groups together.
Most of the PDS tools with the exception of the tools that require individual point selection support the
section selection methods. There are 3 type of section selection: rubber-box method, line click method
and finally 2 end point selection method. In the previous StyleCAD versions, only the third method was
available. The rubber-box method is the most powerful method and any section that touches the
selection box is selected. As before, using the SHIFT key allows accumulation of selection.
StyleCAD provides quick ways of modifying point types for the most common cases. A single point
click or selection box with the ALT key down converts a grading point to an intermediate point and vice
- 11 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
versa. After the quick step entry of S, a single point click or selection box toggles the smooth flag for all
selected points. The quick step entry of N allows toggling of the T-Notch flag for all selected points.
These features are available with all PDS tools. Refer to the help video of the Control Point for
description of the operation.
Points on Outline, Sewing Line, Polybezier Lines, Internal Lines are categorized as follows:
T-notch point:
Outnotch point:
V-Notch point:

In the version 6.0, StyleCAD provides 2 levels of cursor snap. The first is called the default cursor snap
and the second is the explicit snap modes. The default cursor snap mode is always active unless an
explicit snap mode has been selected. The default cursor snap mode has a much smaller snap tolerance
(3 pixels) and snaps to points, outlines and intersection between lines and guidelines. It does not snap
to intersections between lines. This default cursor snap make it very easy to move points to another
point accurately.
There are 5 different explicit cursor snap modes; Snap To Point, Snap To Outline, Snap to Mid-
Line, Snap To Intersection, and Snap To Grid. The current snap mode is displayed in the status bar.
The snap sensitivity window is 10 pixels. If the cursor comes within 10 pixels of the hot spot, the
cursor snap symbol (a light gray X) is displayed and it locks to the hot spot (i.e. the cursor position
- 13 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
reported is in one of the hot spots. Snap is sensitive even if the hot spot is occluded. An example
might be if a filled pattern is overlaid on top of another pattern. If Snap To Point is on and the cursor is
moved close to a point of the occluded pattern, the snap still happens.
If original pattern filter is on, all snap modes work on original patterns also.
Snap To Point snaps the cursor to a pattern outline point, point on a polyline, point on a temporary
shape, a drill hole, an apex point, all four corners of an internal dart, all four punch hole of an internal
dart, or a plaid control point. The snap to point even works on the original pattern (refer to the
discussion of original pattern). Turn Snap to Point on by hitting the F1 function key. The Status Bar
shows the current Snap Mode. Left button click on the status bar snap mode area modifies the snap
setting. F5 turns snap off.
Snap To Outline snaps the cursor to the pattern outline, polyline outline, internal lines, outline of
temporary shapes and French Curves.
Snap To Mid-Line snaps the cursor to the midway point of each section. F2 which is used to select
Snap To Outline selects Snap To Mid-Line also. First F2 selects Snap To Outline and another F2
selects Snap To Mid-Line.
Snap To Intersection snaps the cursor to intersections between pattern outline (both cut line and
sewing line), internal lines, Bezier polylines, temporary shape outlines, and French Curves.
Snap To Grid snaps the cursor to the grid. Snap To Grid mode is only effective if the Grid is turned
on.
By default the extent of the proportional stretching is to the adjacent grading points. However, the user
may select the anchor points for Proportional Stretching by using the END key on the keyboard. The
selected anchor point is displayed in blue color. If Proportional Stretching is on and a shape altering
function is performed, the proportional stretching algorithm is applied up to the selected anchor
point(s).
The Proportional Stretching is automatically turned off when the intermediate point display is enabled
by using the apostrophe/tilde key (`/~) and is turned back on when the intermediate point display is
disabled.
- 14 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
By default, the point move operation with the Control Point tool is performed in Connect Mode.
However, if a point must be separated from another section, click and drag on the line leading to the
point with the SHIFT key down to separate the point. Note that this operation of separating connected
sections is available to open lines. Closed shapes can not be opened this way.
- 15 -

Note: Press [Esc] to switch back to the Control Section tool which is the Default Cursor. You
can also press [Esc] to discontinue the current function. Press the Space bar to toggle
between the default cursor and the current tool.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Base Only option makes the base size pattern visible and all other sizes invisible. The All Sizes
option makes all sizes visible. The Base Only option and the All Sizes option work against each other
so that turning one on turns the other off.
The All Points controls the visibility of all points including grading points. The visibility of
Intermediate Points can be controlled from the view filter window. The Base Size option makes the
intermediate points visible on the base size pattern only. The All Sizes option makes intermediate
points on all sizes visible. The Base Size option and the All Sizes option work against each other so
that turning one on turns the other off.
The visibility of the seam line and cutting line can be controlled from the view filter window. The Seam
option on the left side makes the seam line visible.
- 17 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Cut option on the left side makes the cut line visible. If the Cut Input option on the right side is
turned on, the user is allowed to modify the cut line separately from the seam line. Once the cut line has
been modified this way, the cut line will no longer be able to move in sync with the seam line. If Seam
Input option on the right side is turned on, the user is allowed to work with the seam line. Also, note
that the points on the seam line appear and the points on the cut line disappear.
Unless, the cut line has been modified as described above, any modification on the seam line results in
an automatic adjustment in the cut line. The detailed relationship between the Seam and Cut lines is
explained in the section about the Seam Toolbar.
The user may also view the Seam Size Display by using the appropriate option.
The visibility of temporary objects can be controlled from the view filter window. The All Temp
option turns the visibility of all of the temporarily created objects on/off.
- 18 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Symbols option controls the visibility of all stitch lines, pattern notations, and symbols.
The Full Label option toggles the visibility of the full pattern label containing the pattern comments,
marking group, single/pair, and Qty information.
By using the Pattern Thumbnail option, the user may control the visibility of patterns on the work
area. The user may choose to work with all patterns, or work with only a few patterns in the
working area. The Pattern Thumbnail window also allows the user to work with multiple style files
at the same time. The user can bring in pattern from other open style files very easily by simply
dragging it from the thumbnail view into the working area. For detailed description of how to use
the thumbnail window, refer to the respective section.
- 19 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
When a user wants to select an object that overlaps another, they are presented with a small selection
box that allows them to choose which object they wish to operate on. This is useful because it avoids
confusion when many objects overlap and it is difficult to choose the correct one.
When 2 internal lines points are close together, the closer point is always picked regardless of the visual
stacking order of the internal lines. Above still does not help if 2 internal line points are right on top of
each other. In order to select the underlying point, the user must use the line selection method with the
Space bar (not on points but on the line between points). This allows the selection of the point. In
order to bring up a point property on a point with multiple internal lines joining, right mouse click on
the line leading up to the point. Quick step point type methods using ‘S’ and ‘N’ supports this line click
method also.
- 20 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The guide lines are not included in the marker pattern, and are not sent to the cutting machine.
However, guide lines may be plotted when the style file is plotted.
There are many ways to create guide lines, but the simplest way to create a guide line is to drag the
mouse from the ruler around the working view to the location of the desired guide line. This is
demonstrated below.
Step 1: Drag the mouse from the ruler. If the user drags the mouse from the top ruler, a
horizontal guide line appears. If the user drags the mouse from the side ruler, a vertical
guide line appears.
Step 2: Move the mouse to the desired guide line location, and then release the mouse. The
guide line is created.
Step 1: Click on either the side or top ruler while holding the Ctrl key. This enables the 2 Point
Connecting guide line function. If the Shift key is used, the user gets a perpendicular
guide line in addition to the 2 point connecting guide line.
Step 2: Click on any point (a pattern’s point, or a random location) and drag in the direction to
create the guide line.
- 21 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may use the SHIFT key to create 2 perpendicular (90 degree) guide lines. This allows the
user to drag the cursor in the direction to create the guide line, and the guide line is created along the
dragging and is centered where the user releases the mouse.
The user may also use the Alt key to create 2 perpendicular (90 degree) guide lines. These lines are
the tangent and normal to the clicked point on a curve. This method differs from the Shift method in
that the user must only click on an outline point to create the guide lines. The orientation is
determined by the shape of the outline at the clicked location.
- 22 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may create parallel guide lines relative to other lines using two methods. The first method
is the traditional “dialog box” method, in which the user selects the reference line, and then enters
the relative amount into a dialog box. The second method is using the new Quick Step entry
method, in which the user “loads” the pointer with the relative amount, clicks the reference line, and
the new guide line is created automatically.
Below is the Quick Step method, followed by the dialog box method.
Step 1:Click on the reference line while holding down the Ctrl key. Another method of selection is
to use the Ctrl + Tab + Rubber Box selection. This selection method selects guide lines only and
not patterns or temp shapes.
Step 2:Enter the offset amount using the numeric keypad. In our example, we entered 1/2 to
indicate we want the new guide line 1/2" from the reference line. The mouse becomes loaded for
use.
Note: If a positive number is entered, the guide line is created clockwise of the reference line. If a
negative number is entered, the guide line is created counter clockwise of the reference line.
- 23 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
A dialog box appears, asking the user to enter the relative offset from the reference line.
The user may easily delete guide lines using two main methods. The first method is to create a
rubber box around the guide lines to delete, and then press the DELETE key on the keyboard.
Press the Ctrl and Tab keys simultaneously while creating the selection box.
Deleting a guide line by using the Delete Guide Line pop-up menu option is also very simple.
Simply right click the guide line to delete, and left click on the option from the pop-up menu.
- 24 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Moving a guide line from its original location is very easy. Simply left click on the guide line while
holding the Ctrl key, and drag the guide line to its new location. The line does not change
orientation or rotation. If it is a horizontal guide line, it may only be moved up or down. If the line
is vertical, it may only be moved left or right.
Enabling and disabling guide lines in StyleCAD 6.0 is very simple. Simply left click on the lock in
the upper left corner of the ruler, and the guide lines currently on the work area become disabled.
Disabled lines look lighter in color and can not be selected.
The user may continue adding new guide lines after disabling the previous guide lines. This may be
seen in the image below where the previous guide lines have been disabled, but the guide lines
created afterwards are enabled for selection.
- 25 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Disable check box in the Pattern property window. This feature can be very useful when the user has
to work with multiple patterns stacked/aligned for reference/comparison. The user may disable input
on one or more patterns, allowing himself/herself to freely work with the active pattern/object. When
a pattern is disabled, the entire pattern is depicted in a light gray color.
While a pattern is being dragged, internal lines, apex points, plaid control points and internal darts are
visible.
- 26 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Status Bar, located at the bottom of the screen, shows the important operational mode setting,
measurement readout and other useful information.
The Status Bar exists in both PDS and Grading modes, so both modes are discussed below.
PDS
The first section from the left allows the user to change the Snap settings. The user can choose to
have snapping off, snap to point, snap to intersect, snap to outline, and snap to grid. By simply left-
clicking on it, the user can change this option. This is the same option available from the option
menu, and accessible by using the F1-F5 keys on the keyboard.

Snapping Off
The second section shows the marker group of the selected pattern. By clicking on the field, the user
may control the visibility of patterns by their marker group.
- 28 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The third section shows the name of the pattern that is being focused on. By right-clicking on this
section of the status bar, the user is presented with a pop-up window to be able to select a new pattern
to focus on. When the user selects
the pattern to focus on, that pattern is shown enlarged in the center of the working view.
The fourth section allows the user to select whether they want to edit a pattern by using
proportional stretching, or non-proportional stretching. By simply left-clicking on the box or
pressing the F11 key, the user changes from Proportional to Non-Proportional mode, and vise-versa.
Proportional movement forces the pattern to adjust its curves proportionally to the moved point or
object. In the Non-Proportional mode the user can move any point or line without affecting the
surrounding points.
Proportional:
Non-Proportional:
- 29 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The fifth section allows the user to select whether they want to edit a pattern by using Dynamic
pointer dragging, or Static entry movement. If a user selects Dynamic movement, they can move
things around by freely by dragging. If the user selects Static movement, they move things by
entering exact measurements. This works for points, lines, etc.
Dynamic Mode:
Static Mode:
The sixth section allows the user to turn on or off the Connect mode. When the mode is on, moved
line section remain connected to the sections they were attached to. When the mode is off, the
sections disconnect from those sections.
- 30 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The seventh section shows the last measurement taken by the ruler from within the PDS module. If
no previous measurement was taken during this session, the section displays no numbers.
- 31 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The eighth section of the status bar shows the mouse pointer's relative location from the last
clicked location. This is useful for making exact mouse movements when operating on a pattern
within the PDS module.
The last section from the left gives the user a prompt on what the program is currently working on. If
nothing is being worked on, the status reads "Ready.
GRADING
The following Status Bar sections only apply to the Grading mode.
The Record indicator alerts the user as to whether the style file contains an audio comment or not.
If the indicator reads Recording, a recording exists for the style file. In this case, the user may use
the voice message icon to playback the recording. If no recording exists, the indicator reads No
Rec.
The Increment indicator tells the user what increment is currently being used for the grading
procedure. Once the user sets the desired increment, they can select a grading point to grade, and
then use the arrow keys to move the point in that increment.
- 32 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
To change the increment, simply click on the indicator. The indicator cycles through preset
increment amounts, including 1/8, 1/16, 1/32, etc.
Note: The Increment function exists in both PDS and Grading modes. In PDS, it allows the user
to nudge a selected point by the selected increment amount.
The Marker Group section allows the user to select which marker groups are visible on the work
area, and which are not. To activate the marker group window, simply click on the MG indicator on
the status bar.
- 33 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Copy XY, Copy X, Copy Y functions allow the user to copy certain grading data from patterns,
and paste that grading data to other patterns. The XY, X, Y indication decides what axis of the data
will be copied. If XY is selected, both the X and Y axis are copied for later pasting. If only the X or
Y axis is copied, only that axis will be pasted later.
Copy XY:

3 Point Toolbar
The Point Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to manipulate points: pattern
outline points, sewing line points, internal line points, drill holes, plaid control point, and other internals.
Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can be resized by
dragging the toolbar border. All tools in the Point Toolbar are modal; it stays active until turned off.
Another click on the active tool button disables it. ESC key disables the active tool button as well.
- 36 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
PDS toolbar positions/and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that when
they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
Adding Points: The Control Point tool in 6.0 has combined the functionality of the Move Pont and
Add Point tool available in previous versions. When a line is clicked, a point is inserted at the position.
The type of the point added depends on whether the intermediate points are displayed at the time. If
intermediate points are not displayed, a non-smooth grading point is added. If intermediate points are
displayed, a smooth intermediate point is added. The curve shape can be altered when a point is added
this way. The user may insert a new point and move it at the same time by clicking on a line and then
dragging without lift the left mouse button
Adding Detached Points: The quick step entry of D indicates that a new detached point is created
instead of moving the point.
Adding A Point to an Intersection: Clicking on an intersection between 2 internal lines with the Snap
to Intersection mode on inserts a point to both lines making the point into a joint.
Moving Points: The Control Point tool provide very versatile methods of moving points. Multiple
points can be moved together by first selecting multiple points using the SHIFT key (to accumulate
selection) then dragging one of the selected points. Another method of multiple point selection is to
drag a selection box around the desired points. If a selected point is selected again with the SHIFT key
down, the point is unselected. Points from more than one pattern can be moved together. Even in
Dynamic mode, static entry method can be initiated by clicking a selected point and not dragging.
Quick step entry of the distance or delta x, y allows accurate movement without bringing up the entry
window. This is demonstrated below.
Using Arrow Keys to Move Points: The arrow keys on the keyboard may be used to move them.
Each arrow keystroke moves the selected points by the movement increment setting shown on the PDS
toolbar. The possible increments supported are 1/8, 1/16 and 1/32 inches in non-metric mode and 0.5
mm, 1 mm and 5 mm in metric mode.
Moving joined points: Dragging a joint drags all joined points. If proportional stretching is active, all
joined lines are stretched proportionally.
Quick Method to Change Point Type: The point type may be changed by using the combination of
the ALT and CONTROL key. If the ALT key is held down while points are selected using the move
point tool, the selected point type for each selected point is toggled between an intermediate point and a
- 37 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
grading point. If both the CONTROL and ALT key are pressed when a mouse click or a selection drag
box is used, the selected point(s) become a smooth grading point(s). After the quick step entry of S, a
single point click or selection box toggles the smooth flag for all selected points. The quick step entry of
N or N1 allows toggling of the T-Notch flag for all selected points. N2 turns the point to an outnotch
and N3 to a V-notch. These short cut methods of changing point type works with most PDS tools.
Utilize various snap modes and the Proportional Stretching mode as applicable.
Step 2: Click the point and release without dragging for static entry.
- 38 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2: Point to a line and simply type a number 1-9. Since intermediate point display is disabled, the
specified number of grading points are added evenly spaced within the section while the curve shape is
maintained.
- 39 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3: Enter a measurement to the quick step buffer first. Then point to a line and simply
click. The closest grading point turns blue indicating that it is the reference point. A new point is added
at the specified distance along the curve while maintaining the shape. This is a very simple Relative
Point tool built into the Control Point tool. Quick Step entry of 3*2 would create 3 grading points
- 40 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
When the Delete Confirmation option is turned on in the Option menu, every click used to remove
points is prompted by the message window box to reconfirm the decision.
The user can use the point pop-up menu command Delete Point. If there is more than one point
selected at the time the operation is performed, all of the selected points are removed.
The Relative Another Point tool is used to insert a point or a number of points at certain
intervals into a line, relative to another point. One of the most significant improvements in 6.0 is the
fact that the curve shape is maintained when new points are inserted using this tool.
StyleCAD 6.0 offers many new options for inserting points relative to others. The two most
important new features are the Quick Step entry method, and an updated entry dialog window.
These are discussed individually below.
In StyleCAD 6.0, the user has the option to insert additional types of points, including drill holes,
compared to the previous versions. The point types may be seen in the image below. The image
must change this is relative point XY dialog.
- 41 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may use the Static Mode entry method to access the advanced options.
Step 1:With the tool selected, and with StyleCAD in Static Mode, left click on the line segment to
add a point on. Note that the point could be selected directly also. However, by clicking on the line
segment, it is assumed that the new point(s) will be added to the CCW direction of the reference
(blue) point.
Step 2:The options window appears. Select the Point Type, the Insert Direction, the Distance from
the closest point that the user clicked near, and the Number of Points to insert.
In our example, we chose to insert a single Grading Point in the Counter Clockwise direction,
with a distance of 1 ½ inches from the closest point.
The user may have the desire to insert more than one point at a time using this tool. This may be
accomplished by following these steps.
- 42 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:With the tool selected, left click on the line segment to insert the points on.
Step 2:Insert the number of points to insert in the “# of Points” field. Press the Slit button. This
causes the window to expand, giving the user the option to insert a slit with each point.
To add a slit, click on the “Add Slit At Each Point” checkbox. This enables the Slit
Options. From here, the user may enter the Slit Length in inches, the Slit’s degree of rotation, and
also decide whether it should be a vertical slit or a horizontal slit.
Step 3:After all of the desired options have been selected, press OK. The slits will appear on the
pattern as specified.
The user may want to insert a point in the traditional manner; by clicking on another point.
Follow the steps below to insert points in both directions of the reference point.
Step 1:With the tool selected, left click on the point that will be the reference point.
- 43 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:The options dialog box appears. Enter the desired options, and select the Both option in the
Insert Direction box. In our example, we select notch grading points as the point type.
Step 3:After all of the desired options have been selected, press OK. A point will appear on either
side of the selected reference point.
As previously mentioned, this tool has been greatly improved in StyleCAD 6.0 by adding the Quick
Step functionality. This allows the user to quickly and easily complete an operation with minimal
steps.
Follow the steps below to add relative points using the Quick Step method.
Step 1:With the tool selected, enter the relative point’s distance from the reference point
using the keyboard. The tool’s pointer is now “loaded” and ready for use. In the
example below, we entered the amount of 1 ½ inches.
- 44 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool automatically inserts the point in relation to the closest point to the click.
Note: The Quick Step entry tool inserts grading points by default.
The user may also insert multiple points simultaneously using the Quick Step entry method.
This allows for advanced functionality with minimal steps.
Step 1: With the tool selected, enter the formula to insert multiple points. The formula is as
follows:
- 45 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool automatically inserts the desired points in the desired quantity, and at the desired
distance from each other. This may be seen in the image below.
Another feature added to this tool in 6.0, is the ability to insert points along multiple connected line
segments. If multiple sections (involving multiple patterns) are selected and are connected, points
may be inserted as if the multiple sections are one continuous line. This method works with both the
dialog window method and the Quick Step entry method. It does not support adding slits.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create selection boxes around each line segment to
include in the operation. The user may select individual line segments, or corners to select two
connected line segments.
After the first selection box has been created, press the SHIFT key to select the remaining segments.
Step 2:Enter the desired Quick Step formula into the cursor using the keyboard. In our example
below, we entered the formula: 6*1 , indicating we want to insert 6 points with a distance of 1 inch
between them.
Step 3: Click on any selected line segment. The selected line segments are indicated by their red
color.
- 46 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The function inserts the desired number of points at the desired interval, as may be seen in the image
below.
The ‘Custom’ symbol feature is same as the one provided with the Divide Line tool. If ‘Include End
Points’ option is used, the custom symbol is placed on the 2 end points also. Include End Points
option applies to the punch hole type also but not to regular point types.
- 47 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Relative Point XY tool can be used to extend an open object such as a poly-Bezier curve. If an end
point of an open object is selected and the insert direction requires extension, the specified points are
added along the same angle of the last line segment.
Step 1: Select a reference point on an object. The selected point turns red and the dialog appears.
Step 2: Enter the offset amount in either method. Select the insert direction. Select the point type.
Click OK to exit the dialog box. A new point shows up.
- 48 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1: Select a line segment on an object, which in this example is an internal line.
Step 1: Select a reference point on an object. The selected point turns red and the dialog appears.
Step 2: Enter the offset amount in either method. Select the insert direction. Select the point type.
Click OK to exit the dialog box. A new point shows up.
Step 1: Select a line segment on an object, which in this example is an internal line.
The Distance Adjust is used to adjust the distance from a selected element to another selected
element. The element can be a point on the pattern outline or an internal line, a selected section, a
single point, a drill hole, an apex point, an internal dart or a plaid control point. The distance may be
adjusted by moving the either one of the 2 sides or both sides.
The proper order of operation is to first make selections, and then point, click, and drag from a
reference point to another element. Unlike in previous StyleCAD versions, the user specifies the
adjustment direction and 2 adjusted side by dragging a rubber band. The rubber band must intersect
a point, an internal element or a selected section at both ends.
- 49 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The adjustment types have been simplified to just 3 methods: This Side, Other Side,
and Both Sides. The selection methods supported for sections are line click or rubber
box selection. If the entire closed shape is selected, then the entire shape moves.
The easiest and fastest way to use this tool is to use the Quick Step method.
Step 2:Enter the desired distance using the keyboard’s numerical keypad, then click on the first
reference point for the adjustment. The quick step value will appear near the cursor, as can be seen
in the image below.
Step 3:Drag the mouse from the next reference section (or point) while pressing the SHIFT key.
Step 4:The adjustment input window now appears. Enter the desired distance and press enter.
- 50 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
As can be seen in the image above, the distance adjustment window offers more options than the
quick step input allows. This allows the user to enter detailed information for the distance
adjustment. Such options include specifying a new length, adding or subtracting length from the
existing section, and specifying a percentage of the original distance. The user may also select the
adjustment type by selecting the appropriate option. The Starting Side Point/Section is the side
where the dragging is initiated from, and the Other Side Point/Section is the side where the rubber
band intersects or terminates. If the Both Sides Point/Section option is chosen, both sides are moved
equally to achieve the goal distance.
After pressing OK, the selected pattern area now adjusts in accordance to the input measurement.
The movement direction is along the dragged rubber-box line. Previous version of the tool were
limited to only the vertical or horizontal direction. Also, unlike in previous versions, the selected
section and the reference point does not need to be in the same pattern or group.
To adjust distance by selecting the section and reference point from different patterns, follow these
steps.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag from one reference point (on the first pattern) to the next
reference point (on the second pattern).
Step 2:The distance adjustment window appears. Enter the desired adjustment measurements and
press OK.
- 51 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool also allows the selection of two outline sections. When two sections are selected, the user
has the option to move both sides. With the SHIFT key down, select two sections. If the Both Sides
option is chosen, both selected sections are moved to achieve the goal distance. This is
demonstrated in the image below.
Also, with single outline section selected, a point on that selected section can be chosen to perform
the distance measurement/adjustment. This is illustrated in the image below.
- 52 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: The proportional stretching flag applies to any modification in the outline.
The new Add Point tool is a combination of tools from previous StyleCAD versions. This function
allows for a greater functionality than the previous tools combined. The current Add Point tool
replaces the previous Vertical Add Point tool, the Horizontal Add Point tool.
The simplest way to add a new point is to follow these easy steps:
Step 1:Click and drag the mouse to create a selection box around the sections you’d like to add a
point on. The selected sections turn red. The acceptable methods of selection include a) using the
selection box as in the example below b) clicking on the line c) clicking on the beginning point
followed by clicking on the ending point of a section. Version 5.0 only supported the method C. As
before, using the SHIFT key while selection allow accumulation of selected sections.
Step 2:Once the sections turn red, the user can click on an existing point, and drag the mouse across
the selected (red) lines. When the mouse button is released, a grading point is inserted at each
- 53 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
location where the selected sections and the dragged reference line intersect. Notice that depressing
the SHIFT key while dragging locks the movement to 45 deg increment directions.
The user can also use Static Mode to add points with more options assuming that only 1 section is
selected. With the static mode, the user can select the point type, notch type and exact distance. To
use this mode, make sure the selected mode on the status bar reads Static instead of Dynamic.
Step 1:Select a pattern’s outline on which to add the point. The user can click on the outline itself,
or click and drag to create a selection box around it.
Step 2:Click on a reference point on the same pattern, and then drag a line
across the selected pattern outline so the two lines intersect.
Step 3:The manual entry window appears so the user may enter exact values.
These values include point location, point type, etc.
The quick step entry of measurement is taken as the distance adjustment for the inserted points. If
the quick step entry is used, the software assumes the user doesn’t desire notches or smooth point
types. For example, if “1/2” is entered as quick step entry, the added point is moved ½ inch away
from the reference point along the direction that connects the 2 points. A negative value would
move the new point closer to the reference point. As usual, the proportional stretching mode applies
when the point is moved.
When the user uses a quick entry value of “D” (detached point), this creates a single point rather
than inserting a grading point. As an example, and entry of “D1/2”' would create a single point with
- 54 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
an offset amount of 1/2 inch along the reference line beyond the intersection. This quick step
method works on multiple selected sections as well.
Step 1:Select the align point. This is the point that will be aligned with the reference point.
Step 2:Select the reference point. This point tells the software what to use as a reference when
aligning the first point.
As can be seen below, the first point (align point) aligns itself with the second point (reference
point).
Single points and internals such as drill holes, apex points, and plaid control points may also be
selected for alignment. When the user clicks and drags the alignment reference line, red dotted lines
appear between the selected points and the perpendicular intersections with the reference line. The
distance readout is also displayed next to each intersection point. The user must complete the entire
operation (click, drag, and release the mouse) with only one depression of the left mouse button. If
the user releases the mouse button before the operation is complete, the process will be
unsuccessful..
These lines provide the user with a visual cue as to where the point will be added.
When the user chooses to use this tool in static mode, the offset dialog box appears to allow the user
to enter an offset value. If the user specifies an offset, the selected point is moved to the offset
position from the perpendicular intersection with the alignment reference line (rubber band line).
- 55 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user can also bypass the offset entry window by simply using
StyleCAD’s new quick step feature. To use this feature, the user
simply inputs the offset using the keyboard. For example, to input
an offset of 1 inch, the user would point to the align point, and press
1 on the keyboard to load the mouse pointer. When the user clicks
on the align point, then provides the alignment reference line, the
point will move by an offset of 1 inch.
Another quick step option is the “D” option, which is the detached point option. This inserts a
detached single point at the respective position for each selected outline point, internal line point, or
single point. For all other selected internals, the “D” option is ignored, and the internal element
(such as a drill hole) is moved.
This tool no longer supports adding points on a curve, as with previous versions of StyleCAD. To
accomplish this task, please refer to the Vertical or Horizontal Insert Point tool.
If the pattern has the original pattern saved, the points/internal elements from the original pattern can
be used as the reference for the relative distance method.
StyleCAD allows the user to enter a drill hole onto a mirror line. If a drill hole is placed on a pattern's
outline, a warning is normally provided.
Tip #1: Apply the Grid (Ctrl + G) for close reference, and
optionally use Snap Modes.
- 56 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2: Select a reference point. This reference point can be a point (pattern, slit, internal line), drill
hole, internal dart, apex point, or plaid control point.
If the pattern has the original pattern saved, the points/internal elements from the original pattern can
be used as the reference for the relative distance method.
- 57 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
A pattern can have two plaid control points. The first is the primary control point and the second is the
alternate plaid control point. The alternate plaid control point is displayed in gray. The primary plaid
control point is used to align two pieces, such as the left and right side of the jacket, so that both pieces'
fabric pattern will match. The alternate plaid control is used to match the fabric pattern between one of
the two matched pieces, and yet another pattern such as a pocket piece. The alternate plaid control
point can be placed where the pocket will be placed on the left-side piece. The pocket piece is placed
over the left piece and the "Copy Plaid Control Point" tool is used.
Note: In
addition to the primary plaid control point, the user can also add an alternate plaid control point. This
secondary plaid control point is only available when there is a primary plaid control point on the pattern.
If the primary plaid control point is deleted, the alternate point becomes the primary. If another control
point is added after that, the new point becomes the alternate, and the primary point continues being
the primary one.

4 Line Toolbar
The Line Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to manipulate sections. A section
is defined to be a line segment surrounded by 2 grading points. The section may be part of a cut line,
sewing line, free floating line or internal line. All tools in the Line Segment Toolbar are modal; it stays
active until turned off. ESC key restores the cursor to the default Control Section tool. The Space Bar
key toggles between the default Control Section tool and the current tool.
- 59 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can be resized by
dragging the toolbar border. Typing the short-cut key sequence for a tool pops up the toolbar if it is not
already displayed..
PDS toolbar positions/and docking state are remembered when the program is exited so that when they
are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
When the selection is made all the selected line turns red. In order to select multiple sections, select
other sections with the SHIFT key down. In the dynamic mode, once selection is over, simply drag on
of the highlighted points in any direction. All selected sections are dragged together. In static mode, the
user is asked to enter the movement amount. If the proportional stretching flag is on, the surrounding
curve points are proportionally adjusted automatically after the move. If the Connect Edit Mode is
active, a section moved pulls all connected sections along. The control section tool can be used to drag
the grain line and fabric line also.
Utilize various snap modes and the Proportional Stretching mode as applicable.

[Connection Mode] To move line sections in while pulling all connected lines along:
4.1.1.1 "P" quickStep entry (Control Section tool) for Pivot Dart (ADV PDS
ONLY)
Similar to V quickStep. The user must create a T-shaped section, select the section, click the vertical line
of the T-shaped section to initiate the tool. The difference is the selected section is rotated to create the
V-shape. The number entered is the gap distance. If the T-shape is a subsection, then the surrounding
section is proportionally adjusted and the anchor (blue) point (TAB key selection) processing applies
here. If the vertical section of the t-section is intersecting other lines, those intersecting lines are cut by
the vertical section and the cut lines are rotated (pivoted) just like the V-shape.

4.1.1.4 Section Bezier Blending Method – QuickStep ‘BB’ (ADV PDS ONLY)
Similar to the section blending tool, the Bezier Blending method can be brought up by “BB”
quickstep entry with either the Control Section tool or the Ruffle/Shirring tool. The difference is
that this is a curve manipulation by dragging the Bezier control points. Similar feature exists in
popular drawing tools such as Illustrator. Select a section to blend, type BB into quickstep entry,
then click the selected line. Optionally additional curve points (up to 3) can be added to allow
creating more complicated curve using quickstep entry of “BB1”, “BB2” or “BB3”.

4.1.1.5 Section Point Reduction Method – QuickStep ‘R’ (ADV PDS ONLY)
Point reduction could be very useful especially after importing DXF files from other CAD systems.
With the quickstep entry of ‘R’, “R1”, “R2”, “R3”, or “R4”, the user can perform point reduction on
selected sections. The number indicates the accuracy level where 4 provides the highest level of
accuracy and therefore results in the most number of points. Level 1 results in the least number of
points but may show some deviation from the original curve shape. ‘R’ without the level defaults to
level 2.
- 66 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool uses the internal lines to determine the dart origin position. The internal lines forming the
dart shape must be a straight line with no curve points. This method take the grading data into
consideration so that each size’s dart cap shape is correct. Type DC into the quickstep buffer and
pull a rubber band from one side of the dart to the other. The pull direction determines the dart fold
direction.

must be a straight line with no curve points. This method takes the grading data into consideration
so that each size’s pleat cap shape is correct. Type PC into the quickstep buffer and pull a rubber
band from one side of the pleat to the other. The pull direction determines the pleat fold direction.
The Align Line Segment tool allows the user to straighten selected line sections. The line
section can be selected from a pattern outline, a sewing line, or an internal line. The tool also works
on temporary shapes and external polylines. The user selects a line segment, and all of the points
within the selected section are aligned with respect to the user-provided reference rubber-band line.
In previous versions of StyleCAD, the user had to select the 2 end points of the section in order to
select a section. In StyleCAD 6.0, the user may select the lines segments using the new rubber box
selection method. Also in previous versions of StyleCAD, the alignment was always performed with
respect to the 2 end points. With StyleCAD 6.0’s, the user can choose any 2 points to define the
reference line.
Basic Example
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a rubber box around the line segments to
align.

make selection.
- 74 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The line segment aligns the selected points while disconnecting from its source grading points.
The Segment Length tool allows the user to extend or contract a selected line segment by a
specified amount.
The version of the tool in StyleCAD 6.0 includes many improvements over previous versions. In
previous versions, the user would need to select two points (an anchor point and a move point) in
order to change the length of the selected segment. In the new version, the user must first select the
line segment then select one of the 2 end points to indicate which side is being adjusted. The user
may also adjust the length of two or more sections on two or more patterns together. Besides using
an options dialog box to adjust the segment length, StyleCAD 6.0 also brings with it the most
efficient selection and operation function: the Quick Step.
By using the Quick Step method, the user enters the segment length change amount, and simply
click on the desired segment to change it.
If a section’s length needs to match that of another section, first select the other section(s), perform
Control-C to remember the length, then perform the normal Segment Length adjustment steps
without using the quick step entry. The dialog appears with the copied length already populated in
the New Length field. OK the dialog and the section’s length will match that of the other section.
Step 1:With the tool selected, create a selection box around the line segment to adjust. The line
segment turns red after being selected.
- 75 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Left click on the point in the line segment that will be moved (the other point becomes the
anchor point).
Step 3:The Line Segment Length dialog box will appear. Enter the desired options to be used to
change the length of the desired line section.
The user may select from several options in the Desired Length option box. These options include:
• New Length: Defines a new length for the line segment. The current length is the
default entry in the field.
• Add/Subtract Length: Tells the software to extend or contract the selected line
segment (positive numbers extend the segment while negative numbers contract
the segment)
The Adjustment Type option box contains many options as well. These include:
• Along the Line: This is the default adjustment type, simply extending the line on
it’s current trajectory.
- 76 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
• Anchor Both Points: This causes both points on the line segment to be anchored,
causing the extension to bulge out.
• Adjust Both Sides: This option forces both end points to be moving points, and
neither of them to be anchor points.
The line segment changes based upon the entry, as is illustrated below.
The user may select several line segments from several patterns for the Segment Length
operation. The combined total length is adjusted to the specified value.
Step 1:Select the first line segment to include in the length adjustment by left-clicking it.
Step 2:Select the remaining sections by pressing SHIFT while left-clicking them.
Step 3:Click the point that will be used as the moving point (the last point on the last selected line
segment becomes the anchor point).
- 77 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4:Enter the desired options in the options dialog box that appears.
Step 5:After pressing OK, the selected line sections move based on the entered length change, as
determined by the user. This is illustrated in the image below.
Step entry method, the software uses the default “Along the Line” adjustment setting. This is the
most common setting, and best for most situations.
Step 1:With the tool selected, left-click on the line segment to select it.
- 78 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Enter the desired segment length change amount using the keyboard’s numerical keys.
Step 3:Left click on the point that will be used as the moving point for the length change (the other
point becomes the anchor point and will not move).
The line segment changes length based on the entered amount, without the need for an extra step
with the dialog box. This is illustrated in the image below.
Note: In some cases, the user may wish to reduce the segment length rather than extend
it. In this case, the user simply follows the above example, but enters a negative
numerical value into the pointer rather than a positive numerical value.
The user may decide that they need to alter the length of a selected line segment, but
they also want to keep the original line. This is easily accomplished using the new
Detached option. The user may use the “D” option from the keyboard to activate the
detached option, and then enter the desired amount to change the length.
- 79 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
A new line detached from the original line is created with the specified adjusted length. In fact the
new line is an internal line of the pattern. This is illustrated in the image below.
Connect Option
The Connect option allows the user to decide whether to maintain any connection the selected
segment has to the rest of the pattern or not. The option may be changed by left-clicking on the
option in the software’s status bar.
Notice how the line is still connected to the rest of the pattern when the line is contracted, and the
connection mode is on.
- 80 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The main function of the Extend/Trim Line tool allows the user to adjust the length of a
selected section (or sections) so that the line end touches the selected reference section. The selected
sections are either extended or trimmed as required. The tool also has other functions, such as
extending 2 sections until they meet or performing corner trimming when 2 sections intersects. It
also supports the Quick Step entry method.
The user must first make selections of one or more sections. The user then selects the reference line
by clicking the line. The selected sections are either extended or trimmed so that the closer end is
made to touch the reference section. If extending/trimming the line does not result in touching the
reference line, no change is made to the line. After the operation, the selected sections remain
selected so that they could be used against another reference line.
The easiest way to use this tool is using the rubber box selection. Follow the steps below to perform
the operation.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a rubber box around the line (or lines) to
extend.
- 81 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Click on the outline portion nearest the line to extend, and the line section near it extends to
reach the outline.
Step 3:The selected lines continue to be selected so the user may continue extending or trimming
lines. To continue the process, continue clicking on the outline sections near the selected lines to
extend.
To terminate the operation, the user clicks away from the selected lines in order to deselect the lines,
turning the red lines into black once again.
In the images below, we continue to extend the selected line segments we already extended in the
example above. This is done by clicking on outline segments that extend beyond the previous lines.
- 82 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also trim the lines as they desire, even after having extended them. This may all be
accomplished in the same operation.
The images below demonstrate how to trim the selected line sections. This is done by clicking on
outline segments that the lines to trim pass through.
The sections used as references for the trim or extend operations may be any line segment, not only
pattern outlines. In the example below, we select the line segments to trim, and then select an
internal line as the reference segment.
The user may also extend 2 line segments until they intersect. This is done by simply selecting the 2
line segments to extend (we use the rubber box selection method in our example below), then
clicking one of the end points of the selected line segments.
- 83 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may find it useful to use the “Detached” option, which is a part of the new Quick Step
functionality. This allows a point to be created at the projected intersection between 2 selected lines.
Step 1:Select the two line segments. The lines may be any internal line or outline on one or more
patterns.
Step 2:Enable the Detached option into the pointer by pressing the D key on the
keyboard. The pointer is now “loaded” with the detached value.
Step 3:Click on an end point of one of the two selected line segments. The detached point will
appear at the location the two lines would intersect. This is illustrated in the images below.
The Copy Shape/Measurement tool is used to copy the shape of a selected line section from a
section onto another section. The tool also allows the user to copy shape within the same pattern.
Previous versions of StyleCAD required the selection of two end points to select a section, but the
6.0 version of the tool has many improvements, most notably the capability of selecting sections
using a rubber box. This allows for fast and easy operations.
Follow the steps below to perform the operation using the rubber box selection method.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a rubber box around the section to copy.
- 84 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:The selected section turns red. Press Control-C on the keyboard to copy the section’s shape.
Step 3: Select the section to paste to by dragging the mouse to create a rubber box around the
desired section.
Step 4:The selected section turns red. Click on one of the section’s end points. The selected side is
the side that is adjusted by after copying.
- 85 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 5:When the Copy Shape & Measurement options box appears, select the desired options for
the transfer of information.
Adjust To Fit tells the software to copy the source pattern’s shape onto the destination
pattern and stretch/shrink it if necessary to fit into the space available. If Adjust to Fit is not
selected, the curve is copied as is and the curve around the selected end point is adjusted. Keep
Original Grading at Ends allows the grading on the section ends to remain the same after the
source section has been pasted onto the destination. Copy Mirror Line Property determines
whether to copy the mirror line property from the copied section.
The user may desire to change the orientation of pasted sections. The arrow keys allow the
user to flip sections in several directions. This feature is available at all times. Just select a section
with any tool and use the Control-Arrow key sequence.
Follow the steps below to flip sections using the arrow key method.
Step 1:With the tool selected, create a rubber box around the section to flip.
- 86 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Press the Control key along with one of the up/down arrow keys.
The selected section flips vertically (the section is flipped with respect to the 2 end points), as may
be see in the image below.
Step 3:With the section still selected (red), press the Control key with one of the left/right arrow
keys.
- 87 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected section flips horizontally (flow of the curve is reversed), as may be seen in the image
below.
The user may desire to copy the shape from one line segment to multiple line segments. This
is possible using the tool’s new functionality. The user may also copy the line segments to outline
segments. The Control-C and Control-V technique is available with any PDS tool that allows
section selection.
Step 1:With the tool selected, select the source section to copy.
Step 2:The selected section turns red. Use Control-C to copy the selection into the clipboard for
future pasting.
- 88 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Select the sections to copy the source segment to. This may be accomplished by creating a
rubber box around the desired line segments.
Step 4:To create multiple selections, press the SHIFT key while making additional selections.
Step 5:Press Control-V to paste the selected source line segment shape/measurement to the selected
destination line segments.
- 89 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also paste a line segment (or segments) directly to the workspace, without the need to
paste into another pattern. To perform this operation, simply follow the steps above, but skip
selecting destination segments.
The user may desire to cut a line segment (or multiple line segments) from a pattern. The user may
still paste the lines to other sections or onto the workspace. This may be accomplished by using the
Control-X (cut) and Control-V (paste) commands.
- 90 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Round Corner tool has multiple uses. When used on a smooth point, it allows the user to
make the curve around the point rounder or flatter. If the tool is used on a non-smooth corner, the
user has the choice of using either an Inscribed Circle with Radius or a Bezier Curve Fit using
surrounding non-smooth points.
If the Inscribed Circle method is used, the user only needs to enter the radius and the tool does the
rest. If the Bezier Curve Fit method is chosen, a curve is fit into the triangle shaped by the 3 points.
If a 90 deg corner with equal distance to the adjacent non-smooth point is used, a perfect quarter round
circular curve is created. If the adjacent points are not non-smooth points, the tool rejects the
operation.
In StyleCAD 6.0, the simplest way to use the function is to use the Quick Step entry method.
The pointer is now “armed” with the radius of the round corner.
- 91 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Another method for creating a round corner, is to simply click on the corner to be rounded using
the correct cursor, and enter the rounding amount in the dialog window that appears.
Step 2:A dialog window appears. Enter the desired amount to round the corner.
The default option is the “Inscribed Circular Arc with Radius” option.
Alternatively, the user may select the “Bezier Curve Fit Using 2 Surrounding Grading Pts” option, as
indicated below.
This will create a curve between the two grading points nearest to the corner, as can be seen in the image
below.
- 92 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may want to round the lines on a corner without moving the grading points surrounding the
corner. This is possible using the “S” option with the Quick Step entry method. Follow the steps below to

Step 3:The user is then presented with a dialog box in order to select the round corner type. Enter the
desired amount for the procedure.
The corner is now rounded with the detached option, as can be seen below.
Alternately, the user may enter the detached option in the Quick Step, and may also specify an amount to
round the corner. This avoids the extra step of needing to use the dialog box to enter the amount. This is
illustrated below.
When the user uses the Quick Step option with the Round Corner tool, the “Inscribed Circular Arc with
Radius” option is assumed. In order to use the “Bezier Curve Fit Using 2 Surrounding Grading Pts”
option, the user must use the dialog box method.

Step 1: Select and click on the curve point that you want to change. Please note that this function only
works on curve points. It will not work on any other type of point. To change a point into a curve
point, simply hold down the ALT key while clicking on an existing point.
4.6.4.2 Arc using 2 Point And Tangent Line method (ADV PDS ONLY)
The Round Corner tool can be used to create arcs using 2 point with tangent line method or 3 points
method. The 2 point with tangent line defines the arc where the 2 points are the 2 end points and the
arc shape is determine by the tangent line angle. The 3 points method creates an arc that goes
- 95 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
through the 3 points. The following example demonstrates the 2 points tangent line method. The
method is initiated by quickstep entry of ‘2P’.
- 96 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Divide Line tool is used to equally divide a section. In addition, the user is allowed to
select the point type of the inserted points. The perimeter length of the selected section is equally
divided by the specified number of divisions.
In previous versions of StyleCAD, the user was only able to use the tool in Static mode, which
meant entering options in a dialog window. Although this option is still available, the most efficient
way to use this tool is to use the new Quick Step entry method. This method allows the user to
“load” the cursor with the desired value for the tool’s operation. In addition, the user may also
create points along an imaginary line using the new Detached option.
Other improvements include the ability to select lines directly, rather than selecting points at the end
of lines.
If multiple sections selected are visually connected, then they are treated as a single long section.
However, if they are not connected, each section is divided by the same number of divisions.
To perform the divide line operation on multiple connected lines using the classic static mode
method, follow the steps below.
Step 1:With the tool selected and while pressing the SHIFT key, click to select the lines to include
in the divide line operation.
Step 2:When the last line segment has been selected, click it without pressing the SHIFT key.
- 97 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Enter the desired options, including the point type and the number of divisions, then click
OK.
The line is equally divided with the appropriate points at the end of the new segments. This may be
seen below.
The user may also select multiple lines that aren’t connected for the operation. If multiple sections
(involving multiple patterns) are selected and are connected, points may be inserted as if the multiple
sections are one continuous line. This method honors both the dialog window method and the
quick step entry method. It does not support adding slits Follow the steps below to perform this
operation.

The user now has the ability to select line segments to include in the operation using the rubber box
selection method.
To use the tool with this selection method, follow the steps below.
Step 1:With the tool selection, click and drag the mouse while holding the SHIFT key to select the
line segments to include in the operation.
Step 2:After the last section has been selected, click on any selected (red) line segment without
pressing the SHIFT key.
Step 3:Enter the desired options, including the point type and the number of divisions, then click
OK.
The line is equally divided with the appropriate points at the end of the new segments. This may be
seen below

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may now enter the number of divisions in a line segment without the need to view the
dialog box. This allows for the quick and simple usage of this tool.
Follow the steps below to use the new Quick Step entry method.
Step 1: With the tool selected, enter the desired number of divisions using the numeric keypad.
The cursor is “loaded” with this numerical value and is ready to use. In our example
below, we enter a value of “5”.
Step 2:Click on the line to divide. The line segment automatically divides into the desired number
of segments.
- 101 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Quick Step entry method has a new option that allows the user to divide an imaginary line and
insert points on that line. This option is called the Detached option. It may easily be used with the
Quick Step entry method by “loading” the cursor with the letter D along with a numerical value.
Step 1:With the tool selected, enter the letter D and then the desired number of divisions using the
numeric keypad. The cursor is now “loaded” with the detached option and the numerical value, and
is ready to use. In our example below, we enter a value of D3.
Step 2:Click on the line to divide. The line segment doesn’t appear, but the desired points appear
across the imaginary line.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Curve Blending tool allows the user to modify the shape of one or multiple sections.
When multiple sections (one from each pattern) are selected, the patterns are moved to form a chain,
creating a temporary single connected curve.
While curve blending is in progress, a temporary curve is created with the selected sections intact
but disabled. Therefore, the user may modify the temporary curve while using the original shapes as
reference. When the user
is satisfied with the touched up curve and accepts the change, all of the involved pattern sections are
modified to match the new curve shape.
Method 1
The first option is to simply start with a straight line connecting the very first and very last point of
the connected chain of selected sections. Then the user may be free to add points, shape the curve
and accept the change.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the first line segment to include in the operation.
Step 2:Make the remaining selections while holding the SHIFT key. The selections may be made
by clicking on the line segment to include, or by using the Rubber Box selection method by
dragging the mouse across the line section to include.
- 104 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:When all the sections have been selected, click on the very first point of the chain.
The pattern sections will move so the lines are connected to each other. The user will be presented
with a dialog box to decide whether to start with a new polyline or to work with the existing
sections..
With the tool selected, the user may drag the mouse to begin the curve creation process.
- 105 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
By pressing the tilde (~) key, the user makes intermediate points visible, which causes intermediate
points to be created rather than grading points when dragging. This may be seen in the image
below.
Pressing CTRL + ALT while clicking creates a smooth grading point. The opposite happens when
the user performs the same operation on a curved section.
The user may easily delete a point by right clicking it and selecting Delete Point from the pop-up
menu.
- 106 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
When the user has completed the curve blending operation, click on the Keep button in the Curve
Blending window (which is present during the entire operation). This will cause the curve to
become permanent.
To discard all changes and revert back to the original pattern, simply press Cancel in the dialog
window.
Method 2
The second option is to take the selected curve as is without creating a new curve. With this option,
the beginning and the ending points of each section can not be deleted. However, all points in
between the ending points may be deleted if desired. New points may be inserted as well.
In the example below, we begin from the Yes/No selection screen in step 4 above, but in this
example we select No.
In this version, the user manipulates the actual line sections (including existing points), rather than
creating a completely new curve from the joined line segments. We make our selections and
manipulate the curve to our liking, just as in the previous example.
- 107 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
In the end, we Keep our alterations, and the pattern appears with the selected operations performed.
In this version, a new curve is not created as in the previous example.
With either method, the very first and very last point of the connected curve are prevented from
being moved or deleted.

5 Dart Toolbar
Pattern designers use Darts (Darts for short) to create volume and 3-dimensional curves. For the rest
of this document, the term “dart” will refer to an external dart. Internal darts will always be addressed
as such. An external dart is shaped like a symmetrical diamond. The Dart Width is the direct distance
between the 2 side points of the dart.
The Dart Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to manipulate external darts and
internal darts. Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can be
resized by dragging the toolbar border. All tools in the Dart Toolbar are modal; it stays active until
turned off. Another click on the active tool button disables it. The ESC key, other PDS Tool buttons,
and the Space bar disables the active tool button as well.
PDS toolbar positions/and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that when
they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
When style files with V5 darts are opened in StyleCAD 6.0, they are converted to simple internal
lines.
Step 1:With the Bezier Polyline, insert a slit to form a T-shaped intersection. Then using the
Control Section tool, select the intersection using either rubber-box or
line click method. There is no restriction on the T-shaped intersection. It is not required to be part
of a pattern outline. It could be formed by 2 simple lines as long as they are joined at the
intersection.
- 109 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Once the sections forming the intersection are selected, enter V1/2 (for ½ inch dart width)
and click on the section that represents the length of the dart. The QuickStep V can be remembered
easily if one considers the shape of a dart is shaped liked the letter V. Click the part of the section
that is close to the intersection. When the curse is brought close to the correct position on the
section, the intersection point turns blue. Do not click the point.
Step 4:If the dart should be filled, use the Dart Fill tool described in this section. If the dart shape
should be blended, use the Curve Blending tool described in this section.
- 110 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:In the following steps, we demonstrate blending a section with 2 darts. With the tool
selected, select 2 sides of the dart.
Step 2:Notice the extent of the selection includes part of the second dart. This is because we are
planning to include the second dart in the curve blending action. With 2 sides of the first dart
selected, attach the 2 sides by dragging a line from one side to the other side of the dart. Make sure
the dragging start from the line and the left mouse button is release on the other line. When the
cursor is moved to the correct portion of the dart side line, the corresponding corner point turns blue.
Step 3:The attached sections appear in magenta. Now the remaining half of the 2nd dart is attached
to the magenta section. Select the remaining half of the 2nd dart.
- 111 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4:Attach the selected section to the magenta sections dragging a line from the side line to the
trailing side of magenta sections. Again when the cursor is moved to the correct portion of the dart
side line, the corresponding corner point turns blue.
Step 5:The sections forming the 2 darts are now linked up by attaching the joined sides and are now
ready for blending. Simply click the right mouse button to initiate the blending action. If there was
more darts, then steps 3 and 4 would be repeated as many times as required.
Step 6:A straight line connecting the 2 end points appear and a popup window with Keep and
Cancel buttons appear. The Keep button is used after blending the line to keep the change made and
the Cancel button cancels the operation. Using the tool, add curve points as necessary to form the
- 112 -

curve shape. Here the tool behaves exactly same way as a Control Point tool. Therefore, use the
tilde (~) key to control whether a curve point or a grading point should be inserted. In order to
delete points that were added, use the right mouse menu to delete a point.
Step 8:The curve forming the waist is modified according to the blended line created by the user.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Click on the outline section that will be rotated. The rotation side selection also sets the dart
fold direction.
Step 4:Enter the transfer amount and press OK. The user may choose to transfer a pre-determined
amount of the dart, or may enter a specific percentage to transfer. In our example, we choose to
transfer ½ of the dart.
- 115 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 5:Examine the end result, and if it is as expected, press OK to complete the operation. If the
end result is not as expected, press Cancel to cancel the operation and revert to the original state.
The finished pattern has half of the dart in the original location, and half of the dart in the new
location.
The user may transfer a dart to an internal line. The selection could be done by either clicking on the
internal line or by using rubber box. The internal line opens up by the dart magnitude. This may be
seen in the image below.
The user may also transfer a dart amount from one dart to another dart, not only creating a new dart
from the amount of an existing dart.
Step 1: In this example, we transfer from one dart to another dart, and then select the outline section
to be rotated. Notice how the cursor shape changes when the cursor is moved close to the outline.
The cursor shape shows the rotation direction.
- 116 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Transfer the dart amount from the source dart to the destination dart. In our example below,
we transfer the whole dart.
The whole dart is transferred from the source dart to the destination dart. This in essence eliminates
the source dart since the total amount has been transferred to the destination dart.
The user may also transfer dart amounts from a dart to a dart shaped cut-out area. Follow the steps
below to use this function.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the source dart to use in the operation.
- 117 -

The tool has improved over previous StyleCAD versions with its ability to close a dart section by
dragging the mouse from one end point to the next thereby indicating the dart folding direction.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse from one grading point to the next. In our example,
we move in a clockwise direction to create a dart that folds behind the CCW side.
A confirmation window appears, allowing the user to preview the completed operation.
- 119 -

Step 2:Click OK in the message window to complete the operation. If the desired effect is not
apparent in the preview, simply click Cancel to revert back to the original state.
To make the dart fold behind the CW side, simply start from the opposite grading point and move in
a counter-clockwise direction.
Step 1:Using the Block Blending tool from the Dart toolbar, select the pattern sections to
include in the block blending process.
- 120 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Continue adding sections to include in the process by selecting them while holding down the
SHIFT key.
The selections may be made by either clicking on the line segment itself or by dragging the
mouse to create a rubber band selection box around the line segment to include. By using the rubber
band selection method, the user may add multiple line segments simultaneous.
Step 3:After all the desired points and line segments have been selected, click on the reference
point.
A dialog box will appear confirming the selection, and after pressing OK, the curve will be
created.
The user may easily shape the newly created line once it has been created. Follow the simple steps
below to shape the line.
Step 1:Click and drag the line to create a pivoting point on the line.
- 121 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Pressing the tilde (~) key will toggle the appearance and usage of curve points on the line.
Step 2:Click and drag the mouse to create more points on the line. If curve points have been

To make a corner point into a curve point, click on the point while holding down the CTRL and
ALT keys. To convert a curve point into a grading point, simply click on it while holding the ALT
key.
To delete a point, simply right click on it and select the “Delete Point” option from the pop-up menu.

created.
Step 2: Select the dart reference point (located on the outline of the pattern).
Step 3: Enter Dart Distance and select the distance from Bottom / Top. In the above
example, the total distance of the dotted red line is 9 3/4 inches. We entered 5 inches as the
Distance to Dart Center, and selected Bottom in the Distance From box. This tells the program to
measure the distance of the dart's center from the bottom of the pattern,
- 124 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4: Enter distances for A: / B: /C:. In our example, we selected 5 inches for A, 6 inches
for B, and 1 inch for C.
Step 5: Enter the Punch Hole distance. A punch hole is added at each corner separated from
the corner by this specified distance. If the pattern is a mirror pattern, specify the mirror property of
the internal dart. The default value is to put the internal dart on both sides. The user can specify
different punch hole distances for both the A/B and C sides.
Step 6: If the pattern is a mirror pattern, select whether you'd like to have the dart be on this side
of the pattern, the other side of the pattern, or on both sides of the pattern.
6 Pivot/Shirring/Pleats Toolbar
The Pivot / Shirring / Pleats Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to manipulate
patterns by adding pleats, and fanning out certain areas using the pivoting or shirring functions.
Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can be resized by
dragging the toolbar border. Typing the short-cut key sequence for one of the tools pops up the toolbar
if it is not already displayed. All tools in the Point Toolbar are modal; they stay active until they are
turned off. Another click on the active tool button disables each tool. The ESC key or the space bar
disables the active tool button as well.
The PDS toolbar positions and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that when
they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
6.1 Pivot
The Pivot tool allows the user to manipulate patterns by fanning out certain areas. The user selects
pairs of points, forming pivot lines where the first point selected (red point) becomes the pivot of
rotation and the second point selected (blue) become the opening point. Before the selection of pivot
lines is complete, each BACKSPACE keystroke removes the last point pair selection and the ESC
key removes all selections.

Step 5:Enter the desired options for the Pivot operation. This includes defining the Entry Type
(opening gap measurement or angle), the Opening Size (entered in inches or degrees, depending on
entry type), whether to Auto Blend the outline sections after the operation, and whether to Rotate
Both Sides of the pattern, or just the selected side.
Step 6:If the proposed pattern appears as desired, select OK to complete the operation. If not, select
Cancel to revert to the original pattern without applying the proposed changes.

Step 6:If the proposed pattern appears as desired, select OK to complete the operation. If not, select
Cancel to revert to the original pattern without applying the proposed changes.
The image below shows the finished pattern piece after all options have been applied.
We can also move the shape back to how it was originally by using the negative entry method. This
causes the shape to change in the opposite direction. This is illustrated in the example below.
We begin with the second part of the process, after already having selected the pattern piece and
having added the cuff line sections.
Step 1:Select the desired options for the operation. In our example, we enter an opening size of -1/4
inch for each point on the selected side. This is the opposite of what we did in the previous section.
We also leave Rotate Centered unchecked so the pattern does not rotate from its center, but from
the opposite side.
- 130 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The pattern moves in the opposite direction as in the previous example. Since we used the same
amount of movement as in the previous example, except with a negative number instead of a
positive number, the pattern returns to its previous position.

After pivot operation, the user may choose to leave internal lines showing the spread area.
Once the internal lines are added, the new quickstep ‘DC’ (for Dart Cap) method can be used to add
dart cap shape to each dart area.
The Knife Pleat tool allows the user to cut open pattern sections and add pleats to those
sections. This is done by selecting two end points to use as the pleat line. The user may also include
multiple selections in a single operation to save time.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the first point to include in the first pleat line section.
Step 2:Click on the second point to include in the first pleat line section.
Step 4:Left click on the fanning side (blue points) of the selected sections. The side the user clicks
on (top or bottom of the fanning side) determines in what direction the pattern piece fans out in. In
our example below, we click on the lower side, so the pattern piece will fan out downwards.
The points to be used in the pleat operation become connected with a temporary line to indicate
where each pleat will be added.
Step 5:Enter the desired options into the window, and press OK.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Checking the Fold Guidelines box will fold the actual guidelines inserted with the pleat. The Pleat
Notation checkbox will allow the user to enter a notation on the pleat. The Width entry sections
allow the user to indicate the width of each pleat fold.
The user may also include a Punch Hole in the new pleat by checking the appropriate box and
entering the distance and gap amount. The user may also include Notches on either side by
checking the appropriate boxes.
Step 6:If the proposed pattern appears as desired, select OK to complete the operation. If not, select
Cancel to revert to the original pattern without applying the proposed changes.
The image below shows the finished pattern piece after all options have been applied.
Alternate Options
The user may extend the pattern in the opposite direction by clicking on the selected section’s (the
fanning side) top side.

simply insert temporary pleat lines by selecting an entire section using the new Rubber Box
selection method, and then selecting how many pleats to include. The selected sections are equally
divided to accommodate the specified number of pleats. The operation follows as previously
indicated in the section above.
Step 1:Select the outlines of the sections to include in the operation using the rubber box selection
method. This is accomplished by dragging the mouse across the desired section.
Step 2:Click on the end point that will serve as the first reference point for the pleat insertion
portion.
Step 3:Select the number of divisions (or pleat lines) to include on the pattern, and then press OK.

Since this tool is very similar to the Knife Pleat tool, including all of the selections in each options
window, please refer to that section for a basic overview of tool operation and option descriptions.
Creating a basic inverted pleat is similar to creating a regular pleat. We select the appropriate tool
icon, select the desired points to include in the operation, and select our desired options. The tool
differs in that the Knife Pleat tool creates a regular pleat, and this tool creates an inverted pleat.
The images below demonstrate the differences between a regular pleat and an inverted pleat. To
standardize the differences, both patterns were clicked on the upper outline portion after having

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Ruffle/Shirring tool is a new tool that combines the powers of the Cuff and Shirring tools
into a single powerful tool.
The Cuff portion is used to make a section into a ruffle. The ruffle is created by applying multiple
pivot points after dividing the selected sections in equal distances. The user selects the inside and
outside sections of the pattern on which to perform the operation, and then specifies how many
divisions and how much spreading is desired. The tool calculates the correct distances and
measurements to complete the operation.
The Shirring portion is used to spread a pattern at the selected spread section by a given amount
with respect to a pivot point. When the section is spread, the tool does its best to maintain the
general shape of the curve. The spread amount may be specified by entering the new distance or by
entering the additional length desired.
Basic Operation
Step 1:With the tool selected, and while holding the SHIFT key, create a selection box around the
opening side of the pattern.
Step 2:While pressing the SHIFT key, click on the point from which to originate the cuff segments.
- 142 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Click on an end point on the opening side on which to start the shirring function. The end
point selected decides to which side the spreading occurs. The resulting shape is the same regardless
but just the orientation of the piece after the operation is different. The user may choose to spread
centered in the options window so that the spreading happens in both sides.
The Ruffle/Shirring Tool Options window appers. (I modified the window title)
Step 4:Enter the number of divisions to make, and the type of division to use.
Division types include End Points Distance Division and Equal Perimeter Division. The Equal
Perimeter Division method divides the perimeter distance of the selected section equally where as
the End Points Distance Division method divides the section by equally dividing the straight line
connecting the 2 section end points. For circular/spiral shapes, use the Equal Perimeter Division
method.
In our example, we selected the End Points Distance Division option. The result may be seen in
the image below.

Step 5:Enter the Opening Size Entry Type to select how to enter the opening size amount, select
the Opening Size (on the selected side) for each point, as a total adjustment, as an opening angle (if
Entry in Angle was selected), or the total angle adjustment. Then enter the same information for
the Opening Size (opposite side) if applicable, and select whether to have Auto Blending of the
data, and/or Rotate Centered.
Step 6:If the proposed pattern appears as desired, select OK to complete the operation. If not, select
Cancel to revert to the original pattern without applying the proposed changes.
The image below shows the finished pattern piece after all options have been applied.
Advanced Operation
- 144 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
There are many options that allow the tool to perform different functions. Follow the steps below to
try advanced options.
After selecting 2 sections and selecting a spreading end point and adding the division lines as
indicated in the first tutorial, we begin with the second part of the operation.
Step 1:Select similar options as in the first tutorial, but uncheck Rotate Centered, leaving Auto
Blending on only.
The pattern piece changes its shape according to the entered options, but the shape is not rotated
from the center, as with the first example. This means the base side does not move, and the
spreading occurs in the direction of the selected end point.
- 145 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
We can also move the shape back to how it was originally by using the negative entry method. This
causes the shape to change in the opposite direction as when using positive numbers. This is
illustrated in the example below.
Again, we begin with the second part of the process, after already having selected the pattern piece
and having added the cuff line sections.
Step 1:Select the desired options for the operation. In our example, we enter an opening size of -1/4
inch for each point on the selected side. This is the opposite of what we did in the previous section.
We also leave Rotate Centered unchecked so the pattern does not rotate from its center, but from
the opposite side.
The pattern moves in the opposite direction as in the previous example. Since we used the same
amount of movement as in the previous example, except with a negative number instead of a
positive number, the pattern returns to its previous position.
- 146 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool works magnificently on irregular shapes. Follow the steps below to perform the operation
on a spiral pattern piece.
Step 3:Enter the desired option in the options window. In our example, we select 5 divisions, and
Equal Perimeter Division.
- 147 -

Step 4:Select the desired options. In our example, we enter the entry using Distance rather than
Angle, and we uncheck Rotate Centered, which will rotate the pattern from the opposite side.
Step 5:If the proposed pattern appears as desired, select OK to complete the operation. If not, select
Cancel to revert to the original pattern without applying the proposed changes

7 Seam Toolbar
The Seam Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to manipulate seams. In
StyleCAD design, seams are objects that are added, modified by manipulating attributes or removed.
When a seam is added to a pattern outline section, the pattern outline becomes the sewing line and the
seam outline becomes the actual pattern cut line. If the fill option is turned on, seams are filled with
gray color. In grading view, the sewing line is displayed as dotted gray line.
There are 3 different types of seam edges: Ninety Degree Edge, Extension Edge, and Fold Edge. A
seam edge defines the shape of the seam at the beginning and the end of the seam. A Ninety Degree
- 150 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Edge is shaped to form a 90 deg angle with the outline. An Extension Edge is shaped by the non-
seamed adjacent line angle. A Fold Edge is shaped so that when the seam is folded, the edge becomes
flush with the non-seamed adjacent line angle.
There are 6 different types of seam corner: Normal Corner, Beveled Corner, CCW Overlap Corner, CW
Overlap Corner, CCW Fold Corner, CW Fold Corner.
The PDS toolbar’s positions and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that
when they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
The Add Seam tool is used to add a seam to a pattern. The seam may be added to a particular
outline section, or to multiple sections. The tool has been greatly improved upon since the last
StyleCAD version. The current tool takes full advantage of new StyleCAD 6.0 system
enhancements such as the Quick Step entry method, and the rubber box selection method.
There are two main methods for using this tool: The Static Mode method, in which an options
window appears for the user to input measurements and options, and the Quick Step method, in
which the user “loads” the cursor with the parameters for the tool. Both of these methods are
discussed below.
Static Mode
The traditional way for creating a seam is to make the desired outline selections, and then enter the
measurements and options into a dialog box.
Step 1:With the tool selected, select the outline sections to include in the operation by creating a
rubber box around the desired sections. To accomplish this, simply drag the mouse to create the
selection box.
- 151 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Select the desired seam width in the dialog box then press OK. In our example below, we
select the preset amount of ½ inch.
After the initial seam has been created, new seams may be created by the same process.
Step 1:Create a selection box around the desired outline sections to add a seam to.
- 152 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Select the Manual Entry check box and enter the desired seam width. In our example, we
use a seam width of 1 ½ inches.
The seam is created with the desired width, as may be seen in the image below.
The user may also use the Seam Property window to change seam attributes.
Step 1:Right click on a point and select Seam -> Seam Property.
Step 2:Change the attributes as desired. The point automatically updates as new selections are
made.
- 153 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also click another point without closing the window, and alter the characteristics of
that point as well.
The process of deleting seams is also very simple using StyleCAD 6.0.
Step 2:Press the Delete key on the keyboard. This is much simpler than using the popup menu
Remove Seam command.
- 154 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected seams are deleted, as may be seen in the image below.
Quick Step
One of StyleCAD 6.0’s most powerful enhancements is the Quick Step entry method. This allows
the user to “load” the cursor with the desired parameters, and perform the operation with minimal
steps.
Step 1:Load the cursor by entering the seam amount using the numeric keypad. In our example, we
entered a seam amount of ½ inch.
Step 2:Create a selection box around the outline sections to add a seam to by dragging the mouse
around it.
- 155 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The seam is automatically created to the user’s specifications. From here, the user may be done, or
they may add more seams by repeating the above process.
The user may also control Seam Corner type by using the Quick Step entry method.
Step 1:Enter the Seam Corner type (‘F’ for fold type and ‘90’ for 90 deg corner types) into the
cursor using the numeric keypad. The tool is now ready for use.
Step 2:Click on the line adjacent to the corner point to modify. For 90 deg corner type, the sewing
line to choose is the one that will be matched up with another piece. For Folding type corners, the
sewing line to choose is the one that will be folded.
Step 1:Enter the letter F using the keyboard in order to create fold type corners. The cursor is now
ready for use.
- 156 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also match the seam corners with a Quick Step input of M. The corner types are
automatically changed to 90 degree corner types, and the seam corner width is matched up to the
average of the two sides.
Step 1:Enter the letter M into the cursor using the keyboard.
Step 2:Click and drag from first seam to the next seam to match. Start and end the dragging from
the sewing lines to be matched (sewn).
A window appears to confirm the operation. If the preview is as desired, press OK, if not press
Cancel to cancel the operation.
- 157 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Finally, the user may add or remove notches with a Quick Step input of N.
Step 1:Enter the letter N into the cursor to begin the operation. The cursor is now ready.
Step 2:Click on the sewing line around a seam corner where a notch must be added. The notch is
added at the extended intersection of the selected sewing line with the pattern cut line. This may be
seen in the images below.
To remove the notches, click on the same sewing line again. The notches are now deleted rather
than added. In other words, the notch setting is toggled.
- 158 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Seam Edit tool allows the user to edit a portion of a pattern’s existing seam. For instance,
the user may modify the seam width of a hem to 2 inches where the rest of the pattern has 1/2 inch
seam. The user is then able to quickly apply a 1/2 inch seam to multiple patterns then selectively
modify subsections. The tool also works on multiple subsections.
The StyleCAD 6.0 version of this tool has been enhanced to allow the usage of the new workflow
enhancements. These include the Rubber Box selection method, and the Quick Step data entry
method. Both of these enhancements help make the tool’s operation more efficient.
Static Mode
The traditional way of editing a seam within StyleCAD is to use the Static Mode. This mode allows
the user to select portions of the seam, and then adjust the options in a window that appears. This
mode may take longer to complete the operation, but it allows more options for the user.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse across the selected areas (in our example below, we
select two entire seamed patterns) to create a selection box around the area.
- 159 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: For a complete list of options regarding the Seam tools, please refer to the Seam section of
this manual.
The user may also select only a particular section of the pattern’s seam, instead of the entire pattern.
Step 1:Drag the mouse to create a selection box around the desired seamed area to include in the
operation.
Step 2:Enter the desired seam width amount for the selected section.
- 160 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: Take note in the above example that we selected the Manual Entry check box, and entered
our own width rather than selecting one of the default widths.
The user may also edit portions of the seam, including point properties, but right clicking on a
grading point on a seamed section.
Step 1:Right click on the desired point to change, then left click on the menu item named Seam
Property.
Step 2:Select the desired options to initiate the change in the selected point.
- 161 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: The window is modal, which means it remains active until closed. This also means that
options may be selected, and the results will appear immediately without the need to click on any
additional buttons.
Deleting Seams
The user may easily and quickly delete seam portions by selecting them, and pressing the DELETE
key on the keyboard. The same operation can also be done using the sewing line popup menu.
- 162 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Although the static mode may offer the greatest amount of options, the Quick Step entry method
offers the user a simpler and more effective way to perform the operations quickly. There are a
multitude of Quick Step options available for this tool, and each is detailed below.
The user may adjust a seam’s width by simply “loading” the cursor with the appropriate seam width
value, and then “unloading” the cursor onto the seam by selecting the seam section to adjust.
Step 1:With the tool selected, “load” the cursor with the appropriate value using the numeric
keypad. In our example, we load our cursor with 1/2 to indicate a seam width of half an inch.
Step 2:Drag the mouse to create a selection box around the section (or sections) to include in the
operation.
The seam’s width is automatically adjusted with the new seam value.
In the image above, we loaded the cursor with 1 ½ inches, then dragged the mouse across the seam
we wanted to adjust. The result may be seen below.
- 163 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also alter seam corners by entering the angle amount. In our example below, we’ll
enter 90 in order to make the seam angle a right angle.
Step 2:Click on the seam itself to change the angle. This change may be seen in the image below.
Step 3:In this next Quick Step function, we press the letter F on the keyboard to enable the angle
change on the seam.
The seam edge’s angle changes when we click on the seam itself. This may be seen in the image
below.
- 164 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may match the seam corners by loading the cursor with the letter M. Simply drag the
mouse from the first seam corner to the next seam corner (to match with), and the operation occurs
automatically. Notice that the seam corners both move an average of 50%, meeting mid way
between them.
The user may also add Notches to the seam by loading the cursor with the letter N. When the user
clicks on the seam, the notch is automatically added.
When the user clicks on the seams a second time, the notches are now removed.
- 165 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Convert to Seam option allows the pattern outline to be converted into a seam. The entire
pattern outline can be converted into a seam. However, if the user tries to perform the command to a
mirror pattern, the program will automatically convert the outline into seam, with the exception of
the mirror line. The seam will be created inside of the pattern rather than outside.
The tool has many improvements over previous StyleCAD versions. The most important
improvement is in the Quick Step entry method. This allows the user to quickly and easily convert a
pattern outline into a seam with minimal steps. Of course, the user still has access to the Static
Mode entry method, which allows for more options during the operation. Another improvement is
the Rubber Box selection method. To select sections to include in the operation, simply drag the
mouse to create a selection box around the desired section.
Static Mode
Static Mode is the traditional mode for converting a pattern outline into a seam. With this method,
the user selects the sections to include in the operation, and then enters the desired measurements in
the window that appears.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click and drag the mouse to create a selection box around the sections
to include. In our example below, we include two entire patterns.
Step 2:Enter the size of the desired seam. The user may select a pre-existing seam size, or click on
Manual Entry on the right side of the window to choose a custom size.
- 166 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The desired outline section is converted into a seam. Notice how the seam moves inward, and no
extra space is added outside of the pattern’s outline.
To delete a converted seam, the user only needs to select the seam sections to delete (in the case
below, we select two entire patterns), and then we press the DELETE key to delete the converted
seam.
Notice that the Convert To Seam tool does not have to be selected to perform this operation. The
user may use other tools that allow section selection for this.
Quick Step
The Quick Step entry method is very intuitive in that it allows the user to quickly and easily convert
an outline into a seam with minimal steps.
Step 1:Enter the seam size into the cursor using the numeric keypad. The cursor is now “loaded”
and ready for use. In our example below, we enter 3/8 signifying a seam of 3/8”.
Step 2:Click and drag the mouse to create a selection box around the desired sections. In our
example below, we select two entire patterns.
- 167 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The seam is automatically created. The result may be seen in the image below.
The Seam Perimeter window is scrollable and allows up to 10 entries. If the user continues to
enter more than 10 entries, the very first set of measurements is shifted out and all the other entries are
shifted to the left in order to make room for the new measurement. The new set of measurements is
added at the end of the window.
Step 1: Select the start and end point of the desired line segment on the first pattern while
holding a Shift key. Continue holding the Shift key on to the next pattern. If the user wants to
measure only 1 area, simply do not use the Shift key.
Step 2: Release the Shift key at the line selection of the last pattern.
- 168 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3: Turn on or enter manually your desired choices of Seam related options in Seam
Line Measurement Entries, and then click OK.
Step 4: The measurements that are displayed in the Seam Perimeter window are the
accumulated measurements of the selected line segment from each selected pattern. The names of
patterns are combined to form a composite name (up to 5 patterns) before being displayed.
In this example,
we first measured
the line marked
number 1. We
then measured the
line marked
number 2. The
dialog window
was automatically
updated with each
measurement.
The Perimeter Include Dart option has been added to the options menu. When this option is
off, the perimeter distance belonging to a dart is not included in the measurement.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Pattern Walking function allows the user to compare seam lines or sewing lines between
two or more patterns at a time.
The tool has improved over previous versions in that it now allows for the selection of sections using
the Rubber Box selection method. This is accomplished by dragging the mouse to create a selection
box around the desired sections. The tool also allows the user to perform the operation on more
stationary patterns than previous versions.
The user must first select the start and stop points of the stationary pattern(s). The points of a
moving pattern should be selected afterwards. By holding the SHIFT key as selecting points to be
compared, the user can select points on more than one stationary pattern.
Step 1:Select the desired sections on the first pattern (the moving pattern)
Step 2:Select the patterns to include as the stationary patterns for the operation. Be sure to hold the
SHIFT key while selections are being made.
The order of the start and stop point selection is important. When the walking starts, the first
selected point on the walking pattern is matched against the first selected point on the first stationary
pattern.
- 170 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Drag the end point of the moving section to the end point of the stationary section. Do this
without holding the SHIFT key.
As soon as the selection process has been completed, a control window is displayed.
The Next button (right arrow) advances the moving pattern by the specified advance amount along
the path formed by the stationary patterns. When the comparing operation reaches the end of the
first pattern (assuming there are two or more stationary patterns), it will advance to the next point of
the second stationary pattern. If only one stationary pattern has been selected, the comparison
process is terminated when the comparing reaches the end of the pattern.
If the user discovers a point that does not match the corresponding point on the matching pattern,
they may drag the point.
- 171 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
By pressing the Keep button, the program maintains the moved point’s position when the pattern is
moved back to its original position.
The Seam Compare Facing Each Other option in the Seam menu determines if the selected
pattern outlines are compared to each other while facing one another, or not facing one another.
To compare the usage of this option with the non-usage of this option, please see the example below.
To conserve space, we omitted the section selection portions of the operation. The section selection
process is identical to the examples above.
First, we drag the moving pattern from the last selected point (the beginning of the walking
operation) to the last selected point on the stationary pattern.
Below are examples of the walking operation with the option on and off.

The tool has been improved over previous versions in that the user no longer must select two points
to match the seam corners. Instead the user may drag from one sewing line to another sewing line to
perform the operation.
Step 1:Select the sewing line of the first pattern to be matched, and drag it toward the sewing line on
the second pattern to be matched.
Note: The selection order is not important, since the alterations will be determined by the options in
the Options window.
Step 2:Select the desired options for the operation, then press OK.
- 174 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
These options include Reducing the Larger Side, which reduces the seam corner that appears to be
larger, Lengthen Shorter Side, which extends the shorter seam corner to match the longer corner, or
Adjust Both Sides, which adjusts both seams equally so they meet in the middle.
Step 3:The user is presented with a preview of the completed operation. To finalize the operation,
and keep the alterations displayed in the preview, click OK. To reject the changes and revert to the
original pattern, press Cancel.
When accepted, the tool automatically modifies the shape of the selected seam corners and matches
up the distance from the seam corner to the side notch.
In this example, we select the Reduce Longer Side option, which shortens the longer side to match
the shorter side. The shorter side is not altered.
- 175 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
In this following example, we select the Lengthen Shorter Side option, which extends the shorter
side to match the longer side. The longer side is not altered.
The user may also match seams from non-adjacent sewing lines. This is useful, since the user does
not have to align the seams next to each other to complete the operation.
The user simply drags the first sewing line to the second sewing line as in previous examples, but in
this case the sewing lines are not next to each other.
Then the user selects the desired options as before (in this case, adjust both sides).

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Seam Property window allows modification of the seam start edge, seam end edge and seam
corner type from the current setting. Each seam corner may have an independent corner type. It is
particularly useful to shape the corners of the seam. As shown above in the picture, the seam size could
be altered at any time. The seam property is context sensitive such that only the relevant part stays
sensitized. For instance, if a seam start point is selected, only the Seam Size field and the Seam Start
Edge type can be entered.
While the Seam Property window remains displayed, the user may select other points on the sewing
line to review seam related settings. Using the SHIFT key, the user may select multiple points and
modify the seam property simultaneously. The points selected must however be of the same kind. For
instance, a seam corner point may not be selected together with a seam end edge point. If such a case
occurs, only the points with the same point type as the last selected point are modified.
The seam notch settings may be modified using the seam property window. If a seam joint point is
selected, both the CCW and CW side seam sizes are displayed. The user may change either seam
size at that point.
- 180 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may switch between the seam line and the sewing line as far as the line modification is
concerned. The Sew option on the left side makes the sew line visible. If the box on the right of the
Sew option is turned on, the user is allowed to work with the sewing line. Also note that the points on
the sewing line appear and the points on the seam line disappear. Unless the seam line has been
modified as described above, any modification on the sewing line results in the automatic adjustment in
the seam line. This is the normal mode of operation. If the Seam option on the right side is turned on,
the user is allowed to modify the seam line separate from the sewing line. Once the seam line has been
modified this way, the modified seam line will no longer be able to move in sync with the matching
sewing line. This mode is useful when the seam shape must be customized for various reasons. This
type of operation should be deferred until the pattern design is finalized since any modification to the
basic shape of the pattern would not be reflected on the seam line.
The user may modify this setting if desired. By using the point property on the seam notch point, the
angle may be adjusted. By using the PDS tools, the user is allowed to move points or insert/delete
points on the seam line. Once the custom modification is made to the seam line, the seam line and the
sewing line become separate.

8 Graphics Toolbar
The Graphics Toolbar is a toolbar containing PDS tools that can be used to create new patterns,
polylines, internal lines from scratch, or by tracing other shapes. Some of the tools allow the designer to
create temporary shapes. These temporary shapes are not patterns. They are simple shapes that can be
used as reference points, pattern being constructed, cutting tools, and outline tools. All tools in the
Point Toolbar and Line Toolbar do work on temporary shapes, so that the designer can make
modifications. Temporary shapes are saved to the style file but are ignored when a marker is created
from the style.
Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can be resized by
dragging the toolbar’s border. Typing the short-cut key sequence for one of the tools pops up the
toolbar if it is not already displayed. All tools in the Point Toolbar are modal; they stay active until they
are turned off. Another click on the active tool button disables the tool. The ESC key or the Space Bar
disables the active tool button as well.
The PDS toolbar positions and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that when
they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
The Rectangular Pattern tool is used to create a rectangular shape. In previous versions of
StyleCAD, the user would create the shape by dragging a box to initiate the shape, and then enter the
precise dimensions into an options window. In StyleCAD 6.0, the user has an additional method of
creating a rectangular shape by using the Quick Step entry method. This method allows the user to
quickly and easily create a rectangular shape with minimal steps.
If the rectangle is created inside another pattern, then by default it is made into an internal line.
To use the Quick Step entry method, simply follow the steps below.
Step 1:Enter the rectangle’s width and height. In our example, we enter “10”. The cursor becomes
“loaded” for use.
- 183 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:Enter the rectangle’s desired width, followed by a coma, and then the desired height. In our
example below, we entered “15,9” (a width of 15 and a height of 9).
A rectangular pattern with the desired dimensions appears on the working area near the clicked
location.
Follow the simple directions below to create a pattern using advanced options. These additional
options include creating a pattern with rounded corners, or creating the rectangle as a temporary
shape instead of as a pattern.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the cursor over the work area, creating a box approximately the
size of the desired rectangle. The size only needs to be approximate, not exact.
- 184 -

Step 2:Select the desired options from the options dialog window. Options include rounded corners
on one or more of the rectangular pattern’s corners.
Each corresponding corner is depicted with a number in the image at the lower left of the dialog box.
Corner 1, for example, relates to the pattern’s upper left corner. When selecting the corners to
round, be sure to include the amount of the curvature in the numerical entry fields.
The user may also want to create the shape as a temporary shape, instead of a pattern. If this is the
case, simply click on the “Temporary Shape” check box, and the shape will be created as a
temporary shape.
A temporary shape with 1” rounded corners may be seen in the illustration below.

Quick Step
The simplest way to create a circular pattern in StyleCAD 6.0 is with the Quick Step entry method.
This allows the user to easily create a circular pattern of the exact desired dimensions with minimal
steps.
Follow the directions below to create a circular pattern using the Quick Step method.
Step 1: Select the Circular Pattern tool from the Graphics toolbar.
Step 2: Enter the desired circular pattern’s diameter, using the keyboard.
Step 3: Click on the work area where the circular pattern should be created.
At times, the user may want to create an elliptical pattern; a circular pattern that is not perfectly round.
This may also be accomplished using the Quick Step method.
- 186 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1: Enter the desired circular pattern’s dimensions, first entering the desired width, then entering
the desired height. In our example, we’ll create a pattern with a width of 15 inches, and a height of 10
inches.
Step 2: Click on the work area where the elliptical pattern should be created.
Although the Quick Step entry method allows the user to quickly and easily create a pattern, the user
may want more options when creating this type of pattern. This is necessary in order to use advanced
options, such as creating a temporary pattern, creating a half-circle, and including an inner circle. This
may be easily accomplished by simply selecting the tool and dragging the cursor, as in previous
StyleCAD versions.
Step 1: With the tool selected, drag the mouse in the area to create the new circular/elliptical pattern.

circle/ellipse. The diameter will be 9 31/32 inch. When all options have been selected, press OK.
Custom Angles
The user may also wish to use a custom angle when creating a circular pattern. A circle consists of 360
degrees around, so by entering a custom angle of 270 degrees, we can get a circle as is depicted below.
Perimeter
The user may also create an inner circle within the outer circle. This may be accomplished by choosing
an Inner Circle Option, in the case below Perimeter. We selected an inner perimeter of 25 inches.
- 188 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Radius
The user may want to create an inner circle using custom widths and heights. This may be
accomplished using the Radius option. As may be seen below, we chose the Radius option, and then
selected different numbers for the width (X radius) and the height (Y radius).
The user may desire to create a larger perimeter inner circle than previously indicated. In this case, the
user would use the Distance From Inner Circle option. As may be seen below, this option works in
conjunction with the Perimeter option.
Other Options
- 189 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
An option allows the user to define the size of the outer circle by defining the distance of the outer
circle from the inner circle. The inner circle size must be defined by specifying the perimeter distance.
Otherwise, this option will not be available. This method is limited to a circular pattern (not elliptical
pattern).
For a circular temp shape, an option "Cut Out Option" is also available. This option supports certain
cutting machine (such as Pathfinder, but not limited to) users and helps in situations where a
perfectly circular shape with a relatively small radius must be cut out from a pattern. This only
applies to a full circular/elliptical shape without an inner circle.
When the option is used, the circular shape is created as a polyline with the starting point inside the
circular area to provide blade plunge space. The finishing end is extended to help ensure that the
shape is completely cut out. Group the polyline into the desired pattern.
The Bezier Polyline tool allows the user to create independent lines or internal lines by clicking
points using Control and Alt button to specify the point type. This tool also contains the
functionality of the Add Line Tool in previous StyleCAD versions. The new tool allows for greater
flexibility and functionality than previously available. The tool is also more generic than the
previous version, allowing it to be used for many functions rather than just one, specific function.
In the following examples, only Dynamic Mode and creating internal line is demonstrated. In Static
mode, the user is presented with the distance entry dialog. The tool may be used to create
independent lines using similar steps but outside of an existing shape.
Quick Step
One of the easiest ways to create polylines within StyleCAD 6.0 is to use the new Quick Step entry
method. This allows for flexible and accurate creation of new polylines. Follow the steps below to
create polylines using this method.
In this first example, we’ll create internal lines joined to the pattern outline.
Step 1:With the tool selected, enter H into the cursor by using the keyboard. H stands for halfway
point of the clicked section. The tool automatically computes the halfway point of the section and
joins the polyline to it.
- 190 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Move the cursor to the polyline’s second location, and click the section.
Step 3:Move the cursor to the polyline’s third location, and right-click the section to finish the
polyline.
The user may enter exact locations for the polyline points by using the Quick Step entry
method. Follow the steps below to accomplish this.
Step 1:With the tool selected, left click on the first point to begin the polyline. Notice the polyline
starting point is automatically joined to the clicked point.
- 191 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Move the cursor to the second location, and enter the exact amount from the closest point to
create the polyline. In our example below, we want to place the polyline’s second point 10 inches
from the closest point, so we enter 10 using the numerical keypad.
The point moves to exactly 10 inches from the closest point along the outline.
The user may use multiple consecutive Quick Step entries to create polylines with exact
dimensions. Follow the steps below to perform this operation.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the first location to begin the polyline.
Step 2:Move the cursor away from the first location, and enter the first polyline segment’s distance
from the first point into the cursor with the numeric keypad. In our example, we entered a distance
of 5 inches. Now click the mouse while holding down the SHIFT key in order to lock the rubber
band to be perfectly horizontal.
- 192 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The polyline section adjusts to be 5 inches in distance in the pulled direction from the first point.
Step 3:Enter the second section’s distance from the first into the cursor using the numeric keypad,
and then click the mouse again. In our example below, we enter two numbers: the first is the
horizontal distance from the previous point, and the second is the vertical distance from the previous
point. We entered the numbers -1, 1 indicating we want the horizontal distance 1 inch to the left
and 1 inch above the previous point.
The result is a polyline section that is exactly as we desired, 1 inch to the left and 1 inch above the
previous point.
Step 4:Enter the next section’s distance from the previous point. In our example below, we entered
-1, -1 indicating we want the point 1 inch to the left and 1 inch down from the previous point.
Step 5:Enter the next section’s distance from the previous point. In our example below, we entered
a distance of 5 inches. We also terminate the polyline by right-clicking on the pattern. The SHIFT
key locks the rubber band to 45 deg increments.
- 193 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Very often, an internal line must be added at a certain distance from a reference point. In order to do
this, type in the distance into the quick step buffer and then click the line close to the reference point.
The tool determines the accurate location along the perimeter and starts the line at the location. The
same technique can be used to terminate the line on an existing outline section or even another
internal line section. If the Connection mode is On, a grading point is created on the line to join the
end of the line.
Step 1:With the tool selected, left click on the point at which to begin the new polyline.
Step 2:Drag the mouse to the location where the polyline should end and right click the mouse to
finish the shape. The polyline will now exist as a new internal line on the pattern.
- 194 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The true power of the Polyline tool is in creating complex polylines. The new tool allows the user to
create these complex curved lines by using the Cotnrol and ALT key. With the ALT key down, a
smooth intermediate (curve) point is created. With both Control+ALT keys down, a smooth grading
point is created. With neither key down, a non-smooth grading point is created.
Step 1:With the tool selected, left click on the point at which to begin the new polyline.
Step 2:While pressing the ALT key, left click the location at which to create the first curve in the
line.
Step 3:Continue creating the polyline by continuing to press the ALT key while clicking the places
at which to create curves in the line.
- 195 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4:When the final polyline section has been created, right click the working area in order to
terminate the polyline process. In the case of the polyline in our example, we terminated the line at a
grading point on the pattern’s outline.
The line may be used as any other line on the pattern, including as a cut line to divide the pattern.
To cut the pattern by using the polyline, follow the steps below.
Step 2:Select the Cut Using the Line option by left-clicking it.
- 196 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The pattern is cut in half using the polyline as the cut line. The two newly created patterns are two
separate patterns with their own outlines and unique names. This is illustrated in the image below.
- 197 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
If the clicked location touches both the French Curves outline and other pattern’s outline, the
resulting copy of the section will automatically joined to the outline as illustrated below.
- 198 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
If the clicked guideline does not intersect with any other guide lines or if the intersection is off the
screen, then the quickStep entry is ignored.
8.3.5 QuickStep entry “B” or “BB” allows curve blending (ADV PDS ONLY)
The user may additionally start curve blending process on the last section of the composed polyline.
This is done by entering B or BB (BBn) before the right click is made.
By default, each click creates a grading point. If the user presses the ALT key when the click is made, a
smooth intermediate point is added. If the user presses the CONTROL key when the click is made, a
grading point with smoothing is added. The first point is always a grading point, and a legal pattern
must always have at least 2 grading points.
The tool works in either Dynamic or Static PDS modes. In Static PDS mode, each point is created by
the relative X/Y offset or by angular direction and distance entry relative to the previous point.
Step 2: Click each point to compose a Bezier polygon. Terminate the Bezier polygon with the
right mouse button click.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool automatically terminates the tracing operation and creates a new pattern from the traced shape
when a section is closed by the user. This is done by either connecting the first section with the last
section. The user may also force the closure at any time during tracing with a right-click. When this
happens, the first and the last section of the traced shape is connected with a straight line.
- 200 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: When a line that intersects with other lines is selected, the tracing will follow the user’s
intended tracing, rather than absolutely following the line. In other words, when a selected section
intersects the previous section, the previous section is cut off at the intersection while maintaining
the curve shape. This is illustrated in the image below in which the curved line selection is
shortened when the user clicks on the nearby line.
Step 3: Close the trace selection by clicking on the final line that connects to the first selected. The tool
detects that the shape is closed and terminates tracing and the traced section becomes its own pattern.
- 201 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: The way in which the trace tool determines a line section is by checking for the grading points at
the end of the line section. When a line segment is selected, the tool actually selects the segment
between two grading points.
The tracing procedure may also occur across multiple patterns/groups. Simply click the lines for the
trace, and continue selecting lines across multiple patterns as if the tracing was occurring on one giant
pattern. To close this object, the user once again simply performs a simple right-click or left-click on a
section that closes the traced shape.
Follow the steps below in order to use the tracing process across multiple patterns.
Step 1: After selecting the Trace tool from the Graphics Toolbar, make the first trace selection by
clicking on the first line.
Step 2: Continue making the desired line selections, clicking across patterns when necessary.
Step 3: Select the final line selection, connecting the first line and the last.
When the tracing operation terminates, a new complete pattern based on the trace is created.
- 202 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tracing procedure may also follow sewing lines and internal lines as well. In order for this to occur,
the user simply clicks on the desired lines to include in the trace, and continue tracing normally until the
last line has been included.
In StyleCAD 6.0, users may undo a section selection by pressing the BACKSPACE key on the
keyboard. This is useful in case the user accidentally traces a wrong section and wishes to go back
to a previous selection. If the user selects multiple line selections at a time, then presses the
BACKSPACE button, the software will only go back one section per BACKSPACE..
- 203 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
- 204 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
A backspace deletes the previous trace section. An ESC key during tracing terminates the operation.
When a selected section intersects the previous section, the previous section is cut off at the intersection
while maintaining the curve shape.
Step 1: Select the Polyline Trace Tool from the Graphics Toolbar.
Step 2: The tracing procedure commences when the user begins selecting the
desired points or lines.
Step 3: Continue tracing the section that will eventually become the new polyline.
Step 4: When all of the lines or points have been selected, simply press the right mouse button to terminate the
selection process. A new polyline now appears.
- 205 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The traced polyline can be attached to another pattern utilizing various PDS tools, be used as a cutting
tool, be used as an internal line, or simply saved as a reference line.
The tool may also work across multiple patterns. In order to do this, follow these simple instructions.
Step 1: Select the Polyline Trace Tool from the Graphics Toolbar.
Step 3: Continue selecting the remaining lines to be included in the new polyline. Remember, in this
example we connected two patterns and select points and/or lines from both patterns.
Step 4: When the tracing is complete, press the right mouse button.
- 206 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
As previously mentioned, when a selected section intersects the previous section, the previous section is
cut off at the intersection while maintaining the curve shape. This is demonstrated in the image below.
As can be seen by this image, the tracing was done from one point to the next, and the tracing tool
followed the intersect lines in between the points, rather than continuing the trace using the pattern’s
outline.
The Polyline Trace Tool also allows the user to create traced sections by using a 2-point selection
method. Follow the simple steps in the example below to use this feature.
- 207 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Select the next line segment to be selected as part of the tracing by clicking on the point at
the end of the segment itself.
Step 4:Click on the point attached to the first selected line segment.
The tracing occurs automatically around the selected section, without the need to select the
remaining points or line segments.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Parallel Internal Line tool provides the capability to create an internal line or stitch line
that is parallel to an outline of a pattern.
The user has many methods for selecting the internal line (or lines) to be included in the operation.
The user may use the traditional method of selecting the two end points of an outline section,
clicking directly on the line segment, or creating a rubber box around the line segment. Previous
versions of StyleCAD only allowed the selection of two end points.
The new version of the tool also includes the addition of the new Quick Step entry method, in which
a user may quickly “load” the pointer with the desired parameters for the operation. The tool also
now works with internal lines as reference sections, as before it could only function using outlines as
reference sections.
Static Mode
The traditional static mode selection method is still valid in StyleCAD 6.0, as it offers a multitude of
options the user may wish to use with the operation.
The instructions below illustrate how to create a simple internal line parallel to another line segment.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the lie to be used as the reference line for the operation.
- 209 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:Select the desired options for the operation. These options include Parallel Line Distance
(the distance from the selected reference line to the new line), Gap at the start and end, whether to
include a Stitch, whether to join the new line with adjacent lines, whether to create the new line on
both sides of the selected line segment, and whether to copy the notch information from the
reference line.
The new line segment appears parallel to the reference line, as may be seen in the example above.
To create a stitch line, and include the line on both sides, simply select the desired options in the
dialog box after having made the reference line selection.
Quick Step
- 210 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
StyleCAD’s new Quick Step entry method allows the user to quickly and easily “load” the cursor
with the parameters for the operation. This avoids the need to view the options dialog box and select
the options there.
The Quick Step entry method for the Parallel Internal Line tool allows for many advanced options.
The following sections will detail the available options.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on the line segment to use as the reference line for the operation.
The selected line segment turns red to indicate it is ready for the operation.
Step 2:Enter the desired amount for the parallel line operation using the numeric keypad. In our
example, we’ll enter the number 2 to indicate the new line should be 2 inches from the selected
reference line.
Step 3:Click away from the reference line segment to complete the operation.
The tool automatically creates the new line segment parallel to the reference line.
As may be seen in the image below, the options for this operation only included a distance from the
original line. This means the line is not joined at the sides to adjacent lines, and has no further
options activated.
- 211 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
This following section includes instructions for using the Quick Step method for creating stitch lines.
The selected line segment turns red to indicate it is ready for the operation.
Step 2:Enter the Stitch option into the cursor by pressing the letter S using the keyboard. Then
enter the desired amount for the parallel line operation using the numeric keypad. In our example,
we’ll enter the letter S followed by the number 2 to indicate the new line should be a stitch line 2
inches from the selected reference line.
Step 3:Click away from the reference line segment to complete the operation.
The tool automatically creates the new stitched line segment parallel to the reference line.
- 212 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Again, the options for this operation only included the stitch parameter, and the distance from the
original line. This means the line is not joined at the sides to adjacent lines, and has no further
options activated.
Creating attached lines with the Quick Step method is just as easy.
The selected line segment turns red to indicate it is ready for the operation. In our example, we will
create an attached line with the stitch option at a distance of 2 inches from the reference line.
The parameter for creating attached lines with this tool is the letter E.
Step 2:Enter the parameters for the operation using the keyboard and keypad. For our example,
we’ll enter SE2 indicating we would like a stitch line attached to the adjacent lines at a distance of
2 inches from the reference line.
Note: Always enter the letter options followed by the numeric options.Stitch option. The order of
the letter options does not matter (SE2 works the same was as entering ES2).
Step 3:Click away from the reference line segment to complete the operation.
- 213 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The tool automatically creates the new stitched line segment parallel to the reference line.
Adding notches to attached lines is easy. Simply use the N parameter in addition to the parameters
already mentioned above.
Note: The complete list of Quick Step parameters for this tool are as follows:
The user may create a selection box around single or multiple lines to include in the operation.
These lines are created by simply clicking and dragging the mouse to create a box around the
desired sections.

9 Cut/Join Toolbar
The Cut/Join Toolbar is a collection of tools that operate on the cut line of patterns, such as joining
two patterns, facing tools, protruding/trimming outline, or stretching a cross-section.
Toolbars can be docked to the window frame except at the bottom. Toolbars can also be resized by
dragging the toolbar border. Typing the short-cut key sequence for one of the tools pops up the toolbar

if it is not already displayed. All tools in the Point Toolbar are modal; they stay active until they are
turned off. Another click on the active tool button disables the tool. The ESC key or the Arrow button
on the Main Toolbar disables the active tool button as well.
The PDS toolbar positions and docking states are remembered when the program is exited so that when
they are brought up again, they appear at the same location.
The Cut Tool is a new tool in StyleCAD 6.0 that allows the user to cut a pattern using a line a
series of lines. This tool offers the same functionality as the Cut Using Line pop-up menu
command in previous versions, but this new tool offers more flexibility. The user may select
multiple disjointed line sections for use in cutting, rather than being limited by a single line. The cut
tool works for seamed patterns also.
Step 1:Select the line to be used as the cut line by dragging a selection box around a line, as
indicated below.
Step 2:The selected line turns red to indicate it has been selected. Now, left click the selected line.
After clicking the selected line, the pattern splits into two separate patterns. The line used as
the cut line disappears.
- 217 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:After the tool has been selected, create a selection box around the curved line to be used as
the cut line. Notice that the selected line does not touch the outline. The cut fool extends the line
automatically to allow cutting.
Step 2:The selected line turns red to indicate it has been selected. Now, left click the selected line.
After clicking the selected line, the pattern splits into two separate patterns.
- 218 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The cut line could be made up of multiple disjointed line sections. The line sections are not required
to be connected visually. The composite cut line does not even have to intersect the closed shape.
Step 1:After the tool has been selected, click each line segment to be combined all while pressing
the SHIFT key.
Step 2:The selected lines turn red to indicate they have been selected. Now, left click any portion of
the selected line.
After clicking the selected line, the pattern splits into two separate patterns.
- 219 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Join Pattern Tool is used to join two closed shapes. The joining occurs by selecting the
two sections to join. The first selected side is the stationary side, and the second selected side is the
side that will be rotated to face the first side, and moved to join.
In previous versions of StyleCAD, the user could only join patterns using the point selection method.
Now, the user may use a rubber box around the sections to join. This allows for faster and easier
operations.
There are two basic join types. The first method tries to join the two sides without changing the
shape of the patterns as much as possible. The second method joins two sides by stretching the
stationary side to accommodate the other side. After joining the patterns together, all of their
internal elements (such as drill holes and internal lines) are merged into the joined pattern.
Follow the steps below to join patterns using the new rubber box selection method.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a rubber box around the outline sections to
use as the joining sides.
Step 2:Click on the end point of the stationary side, and drag it to the end point of the rotating side.
- 220 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may desire to join pattern pieces using advanced options, such as adjusting the joining
side to fit and keeping the boundary line as the internal line.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a rubber box around the outline sections to
use as the joining sides.
- 221 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Click on the end point of the stationary side, and drag it to the end point of the rotating side.
Step 3:When the options dialog box appears, select the desired options.
1. Adjust the Joining Side to Fit – This option adjusts the length of the side to be
joined to the stationary side to fit it.
2. Fill Narrow Gap – This option fills any gap left over by the joining operation. This
tool is disabled if the Adjust option is checked.
3. Keep Boundary Line as Internal Line – If this option is selected, the line that acted
as the shared outline for the joined pattern becomes an internal line.
In this example, we selected to adjust the joining side to fit, and to keep the boundary line as the
internal line. The selected pattern sides join using the selected options, as may be seen below

9.3 Facing
The Facing Tool can be used to create a facing for a pattern. In previous versions of StyleCAD,
the user needed to select the beginning and end points of the section where the facing was to be
created. In StyleCAD 6.0, the tool supports all 3 methods of section selection. There are 2 different
ways of using the Facing tool. The first is to select an outline section and the width of the facing
and let the tool generate the shape of the facing. The second is to draw an internal line that is joined
at both ends to the outline and using it to define the shape of the facing. The second method is
perhaps more powerful since the user has control over the shape of the facing but is more involved.
Step 2:Drag a selection box around the desired area to create the facing.
- 223 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Options include the Facing Width, the Facing Edge Options, the Internal Copy Options, and the
Extract Polyline option.
Tip: The Internal Copy Options section allows the user to select which internal elements to copy
from the pattern into the new facing section. The user may choose to include slits and internal lines,
drill holes, internal darts, and external darts.
Tip: The Facing Edge Options section allows the user to select how they would like their facing
section’s edge to be. They may wish to extend the CCW edge and/or the CW edge. If the option is
not chosen and a edge of the facing area is not a corner, 90 degreed corner treatment is given to the
facing.
Tip: The Extract Polyline option allows the user to create a polyline from the new facing section.
The polyline is extracted from the selected pattern section’s outline. The actual facing piece is not
created.
Step 4:When all of the desired options have been selected, press OK. The desired options are
applied to the selected pattern section.
- 224 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Alternately, in the example below, we omit the selections in the Internals Copy Options box.
The user may also select the curved section of a pattern for use with the Facing Tool. In our
example below, we selected a facing of 2 inches with all of the Internal Copy options selected.
Quick Step
One of the most powerful improvements in StyleCAD 6.0 over previous versions is the addition of
the Quick Step entry tool, which allows the user to bypass the options window. If quick step
method is used, by default all internals are copied and no edge extension option and no Extract
Polyline option are assumed. The Facing tool uses the Quick Step entry method to facilitate in the
creation of new pattern facings.
Follow the steps below to create a new facing using the Quick Step entry method.
Step 1:With the Facing tool selected, enter the facing amount using the keyboard’s numerical
keypad. The cursor is automatically “loaded” with this amount.
Step 2:Create a selection box by dragging the loaded cursor around the area to create the facing.
- 225 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The facing is automatically created with no further steps necessary, as can be seen below.
The Unfold Facing Tool can be used to create a facing for a pattern and unfold the facing with
respect to the selected mirror line. In order to create a facing, the designer must select the beginning
and end points of the section where the facing is to be created.
Previous versions of StyleCAD required the user to use the point selection method. In StyleCAD
6.0, the user may use the new rubber box selection method or the line click method to select
sections for the facing operation. StyleCAD 6.0 also allows the user to bypass the Static Mode
entry method, which brings up an options window after the mirror line has been selected. This is
done by using the new Quick Step entry method. The Unfold Facing tool can also work with
internal lines.
To perform the operation using the new rubber box selection method with the Static Mode turned on,
follow the steps below.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a selection box around the outline section to
use in the operation.
- 226 -

The outline section turns red and a message appears, indicating to the user to click on the mirror line
section.
Step 2:Click on an end point of the mirror line section, and drag it to the other end point on the
mirror line.
Note: The options for the Unfold Facing operation allow for complete control over the facing.
Below is a list of options.
1. Facing Width – This option determines that facing section’s actual width.
2. Facing Edge Options – These two options allow the user to extend the facing edges.
The user may select the clockwise edge, the counter clockwise edge, or both.
- 227 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
3. Internals Copy Options – These four options allow the user to copy internal elements from
the pattern to the new unfolded facing section. The internal elements that may be included are
Internal Lines, Drill Holes, Internal Darts, and External Darts.
Step 3:Select the desired options and press OK. The facing unfolds based on the selected options.
This may be seen in the image below.
Alternatively, the user may select to copy all of the internal elements. The resulting unfolded facing
section is illustrated below.
As previously mentioned, the user may now use the Quick Step entry method to quickly and easily
create unfolded facings. Using this method bypasses the Facing Edge and Internals Copy options.
Step 1:With the tool selected, enter the unfolded facing amount into the cursor using the numeric
keypad. In our example below, we chose a facing amount of 1 ½ inches.
Then, drag the mouse to create a selection box around the outline section to use in the operation.
- 228 -

shape of the facing. The existing automatic facing generation method still works the same way.
Step 1:Select the internal line to include in the operation. The pattern will unfold from this location.
Step 2:Select the mirror line by clicking and dragging from one end point to the other end point.
The facing unfolds, using the internal line as the reference location to unfold from.

The Protrude Outline Tool serves essentially the same function as the the Add Seam function
followed by the Keep Seam as Base Pattern function. It is used to add width to the selected area of
a pattern.
The new version of the tool gives the user the same added functionality as other StyleCAD 6.0 tools,
the rubber box selection method and the Quick Step entry method. These new functions allow the
user to quickly and easily perform the desired operation.
To use the tool using the classic Static mode method, follow the steps below.
Step 1:With the tool selected, select the outline sections to include in the protrude outline operation.
This is done by dragging the mouse to create a selection box around the sections to include. Since
multiple sections are being selected, use the SHIFT key to accumulate sections.
Step 2:Make the next selections to include in the operation by repeating the above process.
The selected sections turn red, indicating they have been selected and are ready for use with the tool.

section.
Step 5:When the desired selections have been made, press OK.
- 232 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
An example of a useful option to use, is the Keep Original Outline option, which keeps the original
outline. This creates a new outline while maintaining the original one.
Quick Step
Using the Quick Step entry method, the user can “load” the cursor with the desired protrusion
amount, and the operation occurs automatically.
Step 1:With the tool selected, “load” the cursor with the desired protrution amount by entering the
amount using the numeric keypad. For example, to protrude the outline with an amount of half of an
inch, enter 1/2 into the cursor.
Step 2:Select the outline sections to include in the protrude outline operation. This is done by
dragging the mouse to create a selection box around the sections to include. Since multiple sections
are being selected, use the SHIFT key to accumulate sections.
Step 3:Make the next selections to include in the operation by creating a selection box around the
next section.
- 233 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected sections turn red, indicating they have been selected and are ready for use with the tool.
The outline protrudes automatically. This may be seen in the image below.
Connection Mode
The connection mode display on the status bar indicates whether the option is on or off. If the
connection mode is ON, the protrude operation keeps connected the lines connecting from the new
outline to the old outline. If the connection mode is OFF, the protrude operation separates the lines
connecting from the new outline to the old outline.
- 234 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Trim Outline tool is used to trim a specified amount from the selected outline section. The
trimming is done along the contour of the outline.
The tool has been greatly improved upon previous versions. The user may not only use the standard
Static mode for entering data, which allows for measurement entry using a dialog box, but the user
may also use the Quick Step entry tool, which allows performing the same operation with a minimal
amount of steps.
The user also has the capability of using the new Rubber Box selection method, in which sections
may be selected by dragging the mouse to create a selection box around the desired sections.
Follow the steps below to perform the operation using the various methods.
Static Mode
Step 1:With the tool selected, and while pressing the Shift key (to select multiple sections), drag the
mouse to create a selection box around the sections to use in the operation. As may be seen in the
example below, multiple patterns may be selected for the operation.
- 235 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:If the user would like to make more selections before performing the trimming operation,
simply select the remaining sections using the same technique described in step 1.
Step 3:Left click on any of the selected outline sections (which are highlighted in red) to bring up
the measurement entry window.
Step 4:Enter the desired trimming options into the window. The user may use a predetermined trim
amount, as seen on the left side of the window, or they may enter a custom entry by clicking on the
Manual Entry check box and entering a customer amount. When all options have been selected,
click on OK to complete the operation.
- 236 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Quick Step
The Quick Step entry method allows the user to quickly and easily perform an operation with a
minimal amount of steps. This is accomplished by “loading” the cursor with the desired trimming
amount, and then making the desired selections to use the loaded settings on the desired sections.
Step 1:With the tool selected, “load” the cursor with the desired trim amount. This is accomplished
by entering the desired trim amount with the numeric keypad on the keyboard. Fractions and whole
numbers are both allowed.
Step 2:Create a selection box around the sections to include in the operation. To select multiple
sections, be sure to press the SHIFT key while making the selections.
Step 3:If multiple sections are to be selected, select them now using the technique described in step
2 above.
Step 4:Click on any portion of the selected outline section (highlighted in red).
- 237 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected sections are automatically trimmed. No further steps are required. This may be seen in
the image below.
Connect Option
The connect option (located in the toolbar) determines whether or not elements connected to the
trimmed outline section remain connected after the operation. The option may be switched on/off by
simply left clicking it.
For simplicity, we use the same examples located above, and show only the resulting patterns (after
the operation).
- 238 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Cut Stretch/Shrink tool allows the user to cut and stretch or shrink a pattern by the desired
amount. The operation may also be performed on a mirror pattern. Any new points inserted on the
mirror line are removed automatically.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse from the initial point to the second point.
Step 2:Enter the distance to stretch or shrink the pattern, along with any additional options. In our
example below, we will stretch the pattern (by entering a positive number rather than a negative
one), and select the two options available.
The pattern stretches according to the entered options. This may be seen in the image below.
- 239 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Note: The Orthogonal To Crossing Line option stretches or shrinks the pattern in 90 degree
orientation of the crossing line. The Add Notch option adds notches to the stretched sections of the
pattern.
In the example below, we only select Add Notch and uncheck the Orthogonal To Crossing
Line Option. The results may be compared to the Original Pattern (displayed in grey).
In the example below, we selected both options, but chose to shrink the pattern rather than stretching
it. This was accomplished by entering a negative number into the entry field. The exact input was -
1 inches. Again, the results may be compared to the Original Pattern (displayed in grey).
In the example below, we only selected the Add Notch option with the same shrink entry of -1
inches. Notice the results by comparing to the Original Pattern (displayed in grey).
- 240 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
This tool allows the user to use the new Rubber Box selection method, in which the user drags the
mouse to create a selection box around the section to modify. In previous versions of StyleCAD, the
user could select sections only by clicking on the end points associated with the desired section.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a selection box around the desired area.
Step 2:Click the work area in the direction to modify the pattern. In the example below, we wish to
cut the pattern’s length, so we click the mouse inside the pattern.
Step 3:Enter the modification length in the dialog box. Only use positive numbers. Also determine
whether or not to allow the software to maintain proportional grading at the pattern’s edge. If so,
click on the check box to enable this option. When all options have been selected, press OK.
The pattern’s length is now modified. This may be seen in the image below, in which the original
pattern appears below the modified pattern.
The user may also modify a pattern so the length extends, rather than contracts. To accomplish this,
simply click away from the pattern’s center after the desired section has been selected.
- 241 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Then enter the desired modification amount, and press OK. Again, only use positive numbers.
As may be seen in the image below, the pattern is extended after the operation.
The Scale Pattern function in PDS is used to proportionally scale a pattern. If a pattern
contains an internal line, they may also be scaled if so desired. All internal elements also have the
capability to be scaled. The software always scales external darts, since they are attached to the
outline. The grading data on the selected pattern may also be scaled.
The Quick Step entry method allows the user to “load” the cursor with the desired scaling amount
and options, and then apply those elements directly to a pattern with minimal steps.
Normal Method
Step 1:With the tool selected, and while pressing the CTRL key, click on any section of the pattern
to scale.
- 242 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected pattern changes color to indicate it has been selected. The sections that may be scaled
directly turn light pink.
Step 2:Position the mouse pointer on one of the pink line’s corners and drag it outward.
The static mode entry window now appears. The user may select to scale the pattern by
measurement or by percentage of the original. The user also has the option to scale the grading
accordingly.
- 243 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The pattern is scaled. Below is an illustration of the scaled pattern with the original pattern shown
beneath it (in grey).
By pressing the SHIFT key while scaling from the pattern’s corner, the width and height will scale
proportionally. This may be seen in the images below.
The user may also scale a pattern in one way only, if so desired. To do so, instead of dragging the
pattern from the corner, simply drag the pattern from a flat side.
- 244 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may scale only internal elements, if they so desire. In the example below, we use the new
Rubber Box selection method to create a selection box around the internal element we wish to scale.
After selecting it, we can scale it as we did in previous examples. The dialog window screen has
been omitted due to space constraints.
Using the new Quick Step entry method may help save time on most scaling operations. To use this
new powerful operation method, follow the steps below.
Step 1:Click on the pattern on which to perform the operation. The pattern changes color to indicate
it has been selected.
Step 2:With the tool selected, “load” the cursor with the desired scaling amount. In our example
below, we wish to scale the pattern horizontally only by 110%, so we enter 110% into the cursor.
Be sure to include the % symbol, as the software recognizes this as a percentage entry rather than an
inch measurement.
The pattern is automatically scaled by the percentage amount entered into the cursor. This may be
seen in the image below.
- 245 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
A pattern may also be scaled down by entering the desired scaling amount, and dragging the outline
inward. In our example below, we scale down the pattern by entering the number 5 into the cursor,
effectively making the height 5 inches.
The user may also scale the pattern with an equal adjustment to both width and height by entering
the adjustment amount (in inches or percentage), and dragging any corner of the pattern’s outline.
Connect Mode
The connect settings allow the user to maintain a connection between the scaled section and the
pattern outline, or to release that connection. The mode is
adjustable by clicking on its section on the status bar.
Connect: On
Connect: Off

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Annotation Tool is used to insert an annotation on a pattern with any text and in any
direction desired. The size of the font can be selected. The annotation can easily be moved by dragging
it (with the left mouse button) and can be rotated when the pattern is rotated. A right mouse button
click on the annotation brings up the annotation popup menu. The annotation popup menu provides
commands to modify or delete an annotation.
Pattern annotations may be graded allowing precise position of the annotations for each size.
Step 3: Select the Font Height and Text Orientation. The selected orientation is just the initial
orientation since, once the annotation is created, it rotates along with the pattern.
- 247 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Frequently used pattern annotations can be added to the annotation list. The user can select the
proper annotation text from the user-defined list eliminating the need to retype each time.
- 248 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Pattern Notation tool allows special pattern symbols to be added to a pattern. In order to
add a notation, click inside a pattern with the tool pointer. The Pattern Notation Type window is
displayed for the user to select the type of notation. Once a notation is added, it could be dragged with
the tool’s pointer, resized when one of the four sticky points are dragged, or rotated when the fifth
sticky corner is dragged. Clicking with the left mouse button reveals the sticky points. These symbols
are created in a way so that when the pattern is flipped, the notation itself does not flip. On the other
hand, the rotation of the pattern causes the notation to be rotated.
A pattern notation may be graded. Refer to the Grading manual for details.
If a style file is plotted, the pattern notation is plotted. However, the pattern notation is not included in
marker patterns and therefore when a marker is plotted, pattern notations are not included. The only
exception is the button hole notation, which has an additional option to include punch holes to the
marker pattern where each button hole is displayed.
The Fold Line symbol is a special notation in that if a straight line is clicked, the fold line notation is
created attached to the line. The Button Hole symbol requires additional entries such as the number of
buttonholes, size of the buttonhole, etc. If Display Button is checked, a circle with the specified
diameter is drawn to indicate the button. In case multiple buttonholes are requested, the First Button
Offset along with the Spacing defines the location of the buttonholes.
- 249 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Automatic Proportional Grading option tells the program to apply the grading procedure to the
buttonholes in the cast that the entire pattern is graded. The buttonholes will be graded proportionately.
The Convert to Punch Hole in Marker option converts buttonholes into punch holes when the
pattern is placed on the marker.
A straight pointer type has been added in addition to the bent arrow symbol.
The Button Hole Properties command modifies properties of a buttonhole notation. Selecting this
option pops up the Button Hole Property dialog box, which allows the user to change things such as
button pairing, number of buttons, etc.
The Delete Notation command allows the user to delete the selected notation from the pattern.
The Delete All Notations command allows the user to delete all existing notations from the pattern.

The Plot Property Tool allows the user to indicate what internal line sections are to be included
in the plotting. The user selects the pattern containing the internal lines to include in the operation.
The simplest method for performing the operation is to select a pattern that contains internal lines
using the Rubber Box selection method. The selected sections turn blue indicating that the selected
lines will be plotted. This may be seen in the example below.
To not include a selected internal line section in the plotting, simply repeat the above steps. If a
selected section is already enabled for plotting, then it is turned off.
- 252 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may also select only some of the internal line sections, rather than all of the sections in a
pattern, if desired. To do so, simply select only the internal line section to include, and repeat the
process above to include that section in the plot.
The user may also select certain internal elements without also selecting the sections they are
connected to. This is done by selected the desired internal section while holding the Tab key. The
TAB key ensures that only sections that are completely surrounded by the selection box is affected.
The Cut Property Tool allows the user indicate what internal line sections are to be included in
the cutting at a later time. The user selects the pattern containing the internal lines to include in the
operation. The operation is identical to the Plot Property Tool.
- 253 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The Include Marker Tool allows the user indicate what internal line sections are to be included
in the marker at a later time. The user selects the pattern containing the internal lines to include in
the operation. The operation is same as the Plot Property Tool.
11 Main Toolbar
Refer to the Grading manual for any tool that is not discussed here.
The main difference between the Ruler tool in StyleCAD 6.0 and the same tool in previous
versions, is that in this version the user can simply left-click the starting point, then drag the mouse,
then let go of the mouse. In previous versions, the user had to left-click the first point, drag the
mouse, then click on the second point.
Visually, the Ruler tool is also a bit different. In previous versions, the end of the ruler had
an arrow point in the drag direction. This arrow has been eliminated in the current version to
enhance readability.
Note: To move the ruler line in 45 degree increments, simply press the SHIFT key when dragging
the mouse to the second point.
Ruler tool measurements can be accumulated using the SHIFT key. A ruler measurement taken
with the SHIFT key down is added to the latest entry in the Measurement Display window. The
name of the measured pattern is added to the existing name, concatenated with a '+' in between.
Ruler tool measurements can be accumulated using the SHIFT key. A ruler measurement taken with
the SHIFT key down is added to the latest entry in the Measurement Display window. The name of the
- 254 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
measured pattern is added to the existing name, concatenated with a '+' in between. The measurement
will be the total of the previously displayed value and the new measurement. There is no limitation to
how many times the user may accumulate using this method. This tool can provide a lot of freedom to
the user. The user may actually add a direct distance measurement to a perimeter measurement if
desired, however unlikely that might be. The measurement accumulated in this method is not allowed
to be dynamically updated.
The Status Bar captures the most recent ruler measurement and displays the distance or
. If Accumulate Measurement option is turned on, a ruler measurement line is left
behind each time measurement is made. These measurement lines are temporary and disappear as soon
as another tool is selected or a key is stroke. If Accumulate Measurement as Notations option is
turned on, a ruler measurement line as permanent notation and annotation is left behind each time
measurement is made. These are permanent parts of the pattern involved and will move/rotate/scale
with the pattern. They can be removed using right mouse popup menu just like any other notations and
annotations.
Step 1:Select the Ruler tool from the main toolbar at the top of the StyleCAD
window.
Step 2:Click on the measurement’s starting point. This can be a point, the pattern’s outline, or just
about anywhere else inside or outside the pattern.
Step 3:Drag the mouse to the second location you’d like to use as the end of the measurement. The
measurement appears next to the initial point.
The Ruler tool measures the distance between two objects for all sizes, not just the base size. It
displays the measurements in the Perimeter / Distance Readout window. As in the Perimeter tool,
the Dynamic Update option could be turned on.
- 255 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Currently, the dynamic update option works only if the selected 2 points are one of the following
types of points:
4. Drill Hole
The top row displays the name of the pattern selected. The tool allows measuring combined perimeter
of multiple patterns. In order to select multiple sections, make the selection with the SHIFT key
depressed. For the last selection, make it without the SHIFT key. This tells the system that you are
done with accumulating selection. When multiple patterns are selected, the pattern name field displays
the composite of pattern names with a ‘+’ in between names. For instance, if a perimeter section in
pattern 01 and 02 are selected, “01+02” shows up as the pattern name. For each measurement there are
2 columns of information. The left column displays the total perimeter distance and the right column
displays the increment between each size.
The Perimeter window has a very advanced and powerful feature called DYNAMIC
MEASUREMENT. Right click on the column heading and enable Dynamic Measurement. Once
enabled, StyleCAD dynamically updates the measurements whenever a change is made to a section
involved. This could happen as a result of grading or some PDS tools such as Move Point, Delete
Point etc. Select it again to disable it. All 10 measurements can be turned on for Dynamic
Measurement update. One caveat is that only the most recent one can be turned on. Let’s say there
are 3 measurements and the first has been turned on already. In this scenario, only the last one can be
turned on now. The first, which is on, can be turned off but not turned back on once it is turned off.
The second measurement cannot be turned on because it is not the most recent one.
- 256 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
In case if the perimeter area contains one or more darts and the option "Perimeter Include Dart" in the
options menu is turned off, the perimeter distance belonging to a dart is not included in the
measurement shown.
In previous versions, the user could only make their selections by clicking on the points surrounding
the perimeter sections they wanted to measure. In StyleCAD 6.0, the user has many options for
selecting the sections for measurement.
Point Selection
The user may still select the perimeter sections of a pattern by selecting the 2 end points around the
section to measure.
Rubber-box Selection
This new selection method allows for quick perimeter selection. To use this selection method,
simply follow these steps.
Step 1:Select the Perimeter Measurement tool’s icon from the main
toolbar.
Step 2:Click and drag the mouse near the pattern section to select. This will create a rubber-box
that selects all sections fully or partially contained within it.
The Perimeter Measurement window appears, detailing the total measurement for the
selected sections.
Step 3:Right-click on the Perimeter label on the measurement window. Then select Dynamic
Measurement. This allows for continuously updated measurements as the user makes more
selections.
- 257 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The top-heading label changes color indicating that the dynamic measurement is active for that
measurement. Perform the same command once more and it will turn it off.
This measurement window will continue to be visible so the user may perform further
measurements. The window will also dynamically update whenever the user performs any of the
following functions: Move Point, or Move Section.
Line Selection
StyleCAD 6.0 has the capability of making selections by clicking on the desired lines, rather than
only the points. In fact, many selection methods may be combined within a single operation, so the
user may make their selections by clicking on a point, clicking on a line, dragging a rubber-band box
around their selection, or a combination of all three.
Follow these simple steps to perform this function using the line selection method.
Step 1:Select the Perimeter Measurement tool’s icon from the main toolbar.
Step 2:Click on the first line segment belonging to the section to meaasure. Perform this operation
while pressing the SHIFT key.
Step 3:Continue making the desired selections to complete the section to be measured. In our
demonstration below, we interchange selection methods, sometimes choosing the section by clicking
on the line, and sometimes choosing the section by creating a rubber-box around it. Continue to
perform this operation while pressing the SHIFT key.
- 258 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4:When all the desired selections have been made, left-click on one of the selected line
segments. Perform this without pressing the SHIFT key.
The Perimeter Measurement window appears, detailing the total measurement of the sections
selected.
When measuring perimeters, it is sometimes necessary to include inserted elements such as darts. In
this case, the user must enable the Perimeter Include Dart option from Ruler/Perimeter Options
section of the Settings menu.
When the option is enabled, StyleCAD will include the dart in its perimeter measurement.

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
This function is exactly the same as the 2 Point Vertical Rotation tool, except that it rotates the
pattern so that the 2 points selected are oriented horizontally with the first selected point on the left
side.
Please refer to the section about the 2 Point Vertical Rotation tool for step by step information for
operating this tool.
Step 1:First, select the tool’s icon from the toolbar. This will activate the
tool and allow the user to proceed to the point selection stage.
Step 2:Select the two points that will act as the reference points for the rotation. This is done by
first selecting the anchor point (the point that does not move), and then dragging the mouse to the
second point (the point that will move) and releasing the mouse. This is illustrated in the image
below.
- 260 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The pattern rotates so that an imaginary line connecting the 2 selected points becomes vertical.
If the user wishes to rotate the pattern so that the pattern rotates 180 degrees, they can follow these
simple steps.
Step 1:Select the tool’s icon from the toolbar. This will activate the tool and
allow the user to proceed to the point selection stage.
Step 2:Select the two points that will act as the reference points for the rotation. In this case, the
user begins by selecting the point at the bottom of the pattern, and dragging the mouse towards top
of the pattern, as is illustrated below.
This tool also works on multiple patterns. Simply use the rubber-band selection method to select
multiple patterns. Below is a step-by-step instruction to complete this operation.
Step 1:Drag the mouse while holding the CTRL key and pressing the Left mouse button. Be sure
to include all the patterns you wish to rotate using this method.
- 261 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The selected patterns become highlighted, and are indicated as so by turning red.
Step 2:Select the point desired to be the anchor point, then drag the mouse to the second (rotation)
point.
The patterns rotate as a group in the direction you selected. Be aware that the patterns do not
rotate individually, but as a group. This is illustrated in the image below.
- 262 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The new tool also incorporates all of StyleCAD 6.0’s workflow enhancements, such as Quick Step
entry, which combines the power and accuracy of static mode (entry using exact input by the user),
with the flexibility and speed of the previous dynamic mode (quick adjustments with no requirement
for entry into a popup window).
The Flip Tool is capable of flipping entire shapes or curve sections. It also allows the user to select
multiple patterns, permitting the operation to function on many patterns at the same time. However,
if entire shapes are selected for the operation, only the shapes that are entirely selected are processed.
Step 2:Drag the cursor to create a rubber-box around the area to flip.
Note: The rubber band line sequence is (1) depress at one of the flip reference line (2) drag the
rubber band line (3) release the mouse button at the other end of the flip reference line (mirror line).
- 263 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3:The selected area turns red, indicating to the user the area that will be affected by the
operation.
Step 4:Select the two points that will form the mirror line for the flip.
Step 2:Press CTRL while dragging the cursor to create a rubber-box selection. The only needs to
select a portion of each pattern to include it in the operation.
- 264 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3: Select the point to be used as the mirror line’s origin, then drag the mouse to create the
mirror line.
- 265 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 1:Use the rubber-band selection method to select the first flip section.
The section turns red, indicating it has been selected for the operation.
Step 2:Select the next pattern section to flip by pressing the SHIFT key while dragging to make the
selection.
- 266 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The recently selected section turns red, indicating it has been selected for the operation.
Step 3:Select the point used as the beginning of the mirror line, which will be used as the reference
for the flip. Pressing the SHIFT key while dragging locks the rubber band to 45 degree increments.
“Detach” Option
The Detach option allows the user to perform the selected operation, while still keeping the original
source pattern intact. This occurs by internally detaching the selected pattern section, and then
performing the operation on it. A very quick and simple method for performing the detachment is
- 267 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
by using the Quick Step entry method with the Detach option. This can be accomplished by
following these simple steps.
Step 3:Press the letter “D“ on the keyboard to enable the Detach option. Then select the points that
act as the mirror line for the flip.
The selected pattern section flips, while still maintaining the original pattern section untouched.
General Considerations
The Flip tool is not a modal tool. This means that once the tool is used once, the cursor is
automatically restored to the default cursor.
If the Connection Mode on the status bar is ON when a curve section is flipped, any lines connected
to any grading points on the selected section are adjusted to follow the new location of the flipped
point. If the proportional stretching is enabled, it is automatically applied to the curves attached to
the moved section.
- 268 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
If the Connection Mode is off, then connected lines are not affected.
The connection mode stuff is important and should be demonstrated with an example. Please
ask Justin for sample.
The Flip tool does not work on the partial section of a seamed pattern, since this would cause a
deformed shape. The user may, however, select an entire seam pattern for flipping.
The Rotation tool is a general-use tool that allows the user to rotate patterns, line segments,
internal lines, internals and much more. The tool may be used either in Dynamic mode or with the
new Quick Step method.
No matter the method the user chooses to rotate objects, the operation typically begins by choosing a
point as the center of the rotation. This point may be a point or an internal point.
To use the traditional Dynamic mode method, follow the steps below:
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse from one end point of the rotation line to the other end
point. Without making selection, the tool simply behaves as an angle measurement tool.
Step 2:Move the mouse to display the angular measurement and distance between the 2 points.
Step 3:With the tool selected, select the curve section to rotate.
- 269 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 4:Drag the mouse from one end of the selected section to the next end.
Step 3:Drag the mouse from the end point to the desired end location. The pointer’s location
appears in magenta next to the pointer.
The curved section rotates. The attached section also moves to accommodate the move assuming the
connect mode (status bar) is ON.
- 270 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The user may wish to rotate internal lines. If the internal lines are connected to the pattern’s outline,
the outline moves in order to accommodate the rotated lines (the lines remain connected). This
operation is easy accomplished by this tool.
Step 1:With the tool selected, drag the mouse to create a selection box around the internal lines to
use for the operation.
Step 2:Click the anchor point (the point that does not move), then drag the mouse without lifting the
left button to the other end of the internal line, and then release the left button at that end.
Remember that the anchor point and the second point selected do not have to be on one of the
selected sections.
Step 3:Move the mouse to the clicked line’s new location. Refer to the angular rotation and the
distance measurement readout in magenta.
Note: All selected sections are rotated by the angular rotation amount centered at the anchor point.
- 271 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The lines rotate and the pattern outline follows the rotation assuming that the connection
mode is on. This may be seen below.
The user may rotate an enter pattern by selecting it, then selecting the Rotate Pattern option from
the right-click menu. This is useful to rotate the entire pattern quickly and easily.
Step 1:Select the entire pattern by creating a selection box around the pattern.
Step 2:Right click on the location to be used as the center of the rotation. When the pop-up menu
appears, select Rotate Pattern.
- 272 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The pattern is now in Rotation Mode. This means the pattern may now be rotated.
Step 3:Left click on an outline point on the pattern, then drag that point in the direction to perform
the rotation. When the clicked point’s new location has been selected, release the mouse.
The pattern rotates with the selected rotation point at the new location. This may be seen in the
image below.
Quick Step
Using the Rotation tool with the new Quick Step entry method, the user may quickly and easily
rotate a line segment by a specific amount. This is accomplished by “loading” the cursor with the
exact rotation amount.
Follow the steps below to perform the rotation operation using the Quick step method.
Step 1:Select the line segments to include in the operation. This may be accomplished by clicking
and dragging the mouse to create a selection box around the lines to include in the operation.
- 273 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 2:Click on the stationary side of the lines to be rotated, and then drag the mouse to the selected
line’s new rotation location.
Step 3:Load the cursor with the quick step amount by entering the desired rotation amount using the
numeric keypad. The cursor is now “loaded” with the rotation amount and is ready for use.
In our example below, we enter an amount of 1 inch. The 1 inch rotation is translated to angular
rotation at the second point selected (opposite side of the anchor point). The rotation direction is
specified by which direction the user drags. In order to specify angular rotation, use the quick step
entry format of “A” followed by angular amount in degrees.
Step 4:Click the cursor. Since the exact rotation amount has been entered into the cursor, the cursor
does not need to be anywhere specific.
- 274 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
As has already been demonstrated, StyleCAD 6.0’s new Quick Step entry method has many
additional parameters that allow for increased functionality. One such feature is the Detached
option. This option allows the user to rotate line segments while still maintaining the original line
segment locations. In essence, this option creates copies of the selected line segments, and then
rotates those copies while leaving the originals in place.
To use the Quick Step method with the Detached option, use the steps below.
Step 1:With the tool selected, click on each line to include in the rotation operation. When selecting
multiple sections, make the selections while pressing the SHIFT key.
Step 2:Load the cursor with the Detached option, followed by the rotation amount. If the user
wants to use the detached option with a rotation amount of 3 inches, simply enter D3 into the cursor.
- 275 -

Step 3:Click on the center of the rotation and drag the mouse to the end point of one of the selected
lines.
Step 4:Click the cursor. Since the exact rotation amount has been entered into the cursor, the cursor
does not need to be anywhere specific.
The line sections rotate the desired amount, and while still maintaining the original line section
locations.
Connect Options
The connection mode display on the status bar indicates whether the option is on or off. If the
connection mode is ON, the rotation operation keeps connected the lines connected to the outline.
If the connection mode is OFF, the rotation operation separates the lines connected to the outline.

12 Original Pattern
The original pattern concept is to take a snapshot copy of a pattern before making further
modifications. The original pattern can be used as a reference when a modification is made. The
original pattern can also be restored from the original pattern, and once it is saved, it follows the
pattern wherever it goes. If the pattern is rotated, the original pattern is rotated the same amount to
stay in sync. When a marker is made from the pattern, the original pattern is ignored. The user can
control the visibility of the original pattern from the View Filter window. If the original pattern is
saved after the pattern has been graded, the original pattern is saved with the grading data.
If the original pattern is visible, all snap functions work on the original pattern elements. If Snap to
Intersection is on while a pattern with an Original Pattern is being dragged, the dragging snaps to
intersections within the original pattern (for example where 2 internal lines cross).
- 278 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
The original pattern is for PDS use only and is not included in the marker pattern and is not included
when the style file is printed or plotted.

Step 1: Right-Click on the pattern to select the Original Pattern function on the pop-up menu.
First select an element from the current pattern. An outline point, a drill hole, an apex point etc are all
valid elements. Then select any element within the original pattern. Then the original pattern is moved
in order to overlap the 2 selected elements. If the Help mode is turned on, the user is presented with an
instruction for each step.
13 Notches
T-notches are displayed by using a short vector crossing the pattern outline. The angle of the T-notch
indicates the actual plotting/cutting direction of the notch line. By default, this angle is normal to the
inside angle of the point. In other words, the notch line divides the inside angle at the point. Out
notches are displayed by using a triangle whereas V-notches are displayed by an upside-down triangle.

is visible next to a T-notch if the size has been assigned. If a T-notch has the system default size, no
readout will be shown.
The double notches are inserted when a marker is generated. A t-notch point is created at half the
gap distance in CCW and CW direction. The original notch point is deleted.
The operator may set the SYSTEM DEFAULT double notch gap (Notch -> Default Notch Type).
When a style file is created, it automatically takes on the system default. The user may change this
by (Notch -> Set Double Notch Gap for Style). Each style can have a unique double notch gap
amount.

14 Internal Lines
In StyleCAD, internal lines are either open polyline curves or closed polygon curves that are grouped
into a pattern. The grouping can be done manually using the line popup menu command or automatic
in case of some PDS tools such as the Add Line tool, the Divider Line tool and Parallel Line tool. Refer
to the Line Toolbar section and the Graphics Toolbar section for in depth discussion on how to use the
tools to create internal lines.
Internal lines follow the pattern but can be reshaped, removed, separated, traced and graded. Open
Internal lines may be joined at one end, both ends or not joined at all. Doubly joined internal lines can
be used to cut the pattern.
When an internal line is clicked with the left mouse button, all points on the line turns red until the
mouse button is release. This feature can be useful when multiple internal lines are joined and the user
is trying to figure out the extent of a particular internal line.
To accumulate selections, use the drag box selection method, or use the SHIFT key while clicking on
internal lines (either on the line or on the points). If an internal line is already selected, do another
SHIFT key selection on the same internal line to de-select it. In other words, SHIFT + Selection
toggles the selection. At this point, any modification will affect all of the selected internal lines. One
thing to note here is that all selected internal lines will take on exactly the same setting shown on the
property window, not just the check marks clicked by the operator.
An internal line can be converted into a stitch line. The user may custom define the stitch line style.
- 283 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
multiple internal lines are selected either by using the SHIFT key or selection box while the property
window is displayed, a property change is applied to each one.
In the example above the Internal Line Property shows that it is created as a normal internal line. A
normal internal line may be converted into a fabric line assuming it is a straight line segment with only 2
grading points. It could also be converted to a stitch line. Notice that the default output control setting
allows the line to be included in the marker pattern, included in the plotting, unfolded, but allowed to be
cut.
There are four different Output Control settings as shown above. When the Include in Marker
Pattern option is turned on, the internal line is included on the marker pattern. Turning on Include in
Plot will guide the plotting machine to draw internal line(s) on its pattern. If Include in Cutting is
turned on, internal lines on its pattern will be cut, as well as the pattern outlines. The Duplicate
Unfolding Mirror Pattern is used to duplicate a mirror image of internal lines on the parent pattern
onto the mirror side of the pattern when it’s unfolded. If these options are off, the above-mentioned
processes will not be performed.
14.3 Delete
The delete function in the internal line popup menu first ungroups the internal line from the pattern
then deletes the line.
14.4 Ungroup
The ungroup function in the internal line popup menu ungroups the internal line from the pattern.
Once ungrouped, the line becomes a free-standing polybezier curve. If the internal line points were
joined with the pattern outline point or other internal line points, the joined points are first disjoined,
and then the line is ungrouped.

grading point (default) at the location, then joins the polyline / internal line to the newly inserted
point. All this is done assuming that the polyline / internal line's end point is touching (or very close
to touching) the cut line or seam line.
This still does not help if two internal line points are directly on top of each other. In order to select
the point underneath, first click on the internal line (not on points but on the line between points).
The selected internal line becomes the highest priority line in term of the visual pecking order.

Step 2: Press the Add button. Enter the new code ID. The new entry is appended to the list
with blank measurements and tolerance.
Step 3: Enter the desired measurements. The user must press the Save button or the entered
description will not be saved. The effected pattern changes its shape to accommodate the measurement
change.
Step 4: The Add Code command can be performed from the column headings. Press the right
mouse button and select the Add Code menu command.
Step 5: In order to delete a measurement, first click the row that contains the code to delete
followed by the Delete Code button. Confirm the delete action. The row is removed. The Delete
Code operation can be performed from any row containing a measurement. Press the right mouse
button and select the Delete Code menu command. If the working view is in the Pattern Spec Entry
Mode, the graphical representation of the measurement is erased.
Step 6: The Print button gives you a hardcopy of the pattern specification.
Step 1: Select the tool’s icon. At this point, if the patterns shown have any pattern spec
data, the spec information should be graphically displayed on the patterns. This is depicted in the
picture below.
Step 2: Select any 2 Grading Points. The Pattern Spec Entry Form should be displayed with
Direct Distance and Perimeter measurements between the 2 selected points along with the distance to
the borders.
- 291 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
Step 3: Select the code either by entering the code or by selecting it from the pull-down list. If
the code entered is found in the master list, the description field is automatically populated. At this
point, the description can be modified. This does not change the Master Code List Database.
Entering a spec code that does not exist in the Master Code List Database is allowed, but the new spec
code is not automatically stored in the Master Code List Database. The Save Code button takes the
spec code and the code description, and then stores the information into the Master Code List.
Step 4: Select the Measurement Type to save: either Direct Distance or Perimeter. In case of
the Direct Distance or Perimeter type, choose the anchor point (point 1 or point 2). The anchor point
shows up with a blue highlight. The anchor point comes into play when the measurement is changed
from the Pattern Specification Window and the pattern needs to be modified to satisfy that new
measurement. The point designated as the anchor point will not move. The other point is moved to
meet the new measurement. Enter the Tolerance amount. All distance entries can be made in both
fractional and decimal formats. The metric system only allows decimal format. The measurement
values can be edited as well. Modify the value if desired, and then save it.
Step 5: While the Pattern Spec Entry Form is being displayed, selecting other areas in either the
same pattern or another pattern can perform other measurements. Continue saving several
measurements this way. Bring up the Pattern Specification Window. You should see the list of saved
Spec Codes and respective measurements.
- 292 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
If the same point is clicked twice (if it is clicked too fast it becomes a double-click), the spec entry allows
entering the distance to one of the borders as a measurement. The distance to the border for each size
is the distance to the respective binding box for the size.
Step 1: Bring up the pattern popup menu and select the Re-measure Pattern Spec command.
- 293 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
If the print command is performed while the pattern spec entry is active, the hardcopy produced will
show all the measurements. This option works for both the single page and the multiple page formats.
If a digital image is associated with the style file, the picture appears next to the list of available sizes.
Any modification made on the window is applied immediately to the selected pattern(s). In order to
apply the same change to multiple patterns, use the selection box dragging method to completely
enclose those patterns that you want to change. In order to change the focus of the window to another
pattern, simply left click the pattern.
If multiple patterns are selected by using the SHIFT key, the pattern dimension panel shows the
accumulated perimeter and area display.

QTY: This quantity determines how many pieces are created when the pattern is used in a marker.
Comment: Enter a pattern comment or select from the pattern comment list.
Marker Group: the marker group the pattern belongs to. Patterns in the same marker group are
included in the same marker.
Marker Group Selection List: This button brings up the Marker Group Alias List. Each style file is
associated with a unique marker group alias. The user defines the list. This selection list allows the user
to assign a marker group alias to the selected pattern.
Pair: If this check box is set, the selected pattern is a pair pattern (left/right). Otherwise, it is a single
pattern.
Right Side: flag that specifies the Left/Right side for a pair pattern. The default is Left.
Mirror: If this check box is set, the selected pattern is a mirror (fold) pattern.
Original: If this check box is set, the selected pattern has the original pattern associated with it. If the
user checks this box and the original pattern does not exist, the current pattern is saved as the original
pattern.
Show Original: This check box is sensitized only if the original check box is set. If this check box is
set, the original pattern of the selected pattern is displayed. This control overrides the original pattern
view filter.
Auto Blend Grading Data: If this check box is not set, the automatic blending of intermediate points
grading data is turned off for the selected pattern. For more information, refer to the StyleCAD
Grading module user manual. By default this is turned on.
Combined: If set, it indicates that the pattern is a combined pattern. Refer to the pattern popup menu
chapter for more information.
No Marker: If set, the selected pattern is not included in the marker creation.
Disable: If this check box is set, the selected pattern is disabled and cannot be selected by any tools.

Cut/Seam Separate: If this check box is set, the cut line does not automatically adjust when the seam
line is modified. The flag is turned on, if the user modifies the cut line shape (outline) of a seamed
pattern.
Dimension: Shows the dimension of the selected pattern. This is read-only data. If multiple patterns
are selected by using the SHIFT key, the pattern dimension panel shows the accumulated perimeter and
area display.
Cut Direction/Option: For cutting machine users only. Direction in which the pattern should be
cut. Bi-directional Fold Point 1 and 2 check boxes are sensitized only if the selected pattern is a fold
pattern. The Circle Cut-Out From Inside Option supports certain cutting machine (such as
Pathfinder but not limited to) users and helps in situations where a perfectly circular shape with
relatively small radius must be cut out from a pattern. This only applies to a full circular/elliptical shape
without an inner circle. When the option is used, the circular shape is created as a polyline with the
starting point inside the circular area to provide blade plunge space and the finishing end is extended to
help ensure the shape is completely cut out. This option is read-only and cannot be set from the pattern
property window. The only way this option can be set is if a circular pattern is created with the Circle
tool. If the Opposite Pair Dir option is on and the pattern is a pair pattern, the flipped side is created
with the opposite cut direction in markers. In other words, the front side of the pair pattern is assigned
CW cut direction, the flipped side will be cut in CCW cut direction.
Buffering: Creates additional spacing between patterns once the pattern is used in a marker. (Refer to
the Marking manual for more detailed information about this). The button next to the Buffering check
box copies the entry in Up: to the other 3 fields below. Pattern Buffering amount can be saved as
system default value and be recalled. Use the DEFAULT and RECALL buttons.
If the specified buffering amount causes the resulting pattern to have an overlapping section, an error
message is provided to the user.
When a pattern list row is selected in the Browse Pattern Properties window, the pattern is
highlighted in the working view (blue pattern outline) so that the user knows which piece's
properties are being modified.

When an end point of a polyline is joined to a pattern outline point, the displayed point is based on the
point property of the outline point. For instance, if the outline point is an intermediate curve point,
then the joined point will be shown as an intermediate curve point even though the end point of a
polyline is always a non-smooth grading point.
If an end point of an internal line or a free polyline is touching the cut line of a pattern and Join Point
command is executed, a point is automatically added to the cut line and the line is joined.
This tool works with internal lines. The user does not have to ungroup the internal line(s) before

StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
After digitizing or editing a pattern, the curvature of the pattern may not be perfectly smooth. As a
general rule, too many intermediate points (curve points) between the grading points makes difficult the
job of smoothing out a curve. In most cases, two or three curve points may be sufficient to create the
desired curve. Any imperfection in the base size curve can sometimes be amplified when the grading
procedure is performed. StyleCAD provides a curve-fitting algorithm to smooth the curvature.
The Smooth Curve command can be accessed from the curve pop-up menu. Right click on the outline
of a pattern or a temporary object. The function performs the smoothing procedure on the selected
curve until it reaches the surrounding grading points. Notice the imperfection on the curve of the base
size in the top picture before the curve smoothing procedure is performed. In the bottom picture, the
curve has become much smoother and that smoothness has translated to the other sizes as well.
- 306 -
StyleCAD 7.0 Release Note
There is an alternate method to performing the smooth curve function. The user may select multiple
points on the curve before applying the Smooth Curve command. StyleCAD’s curve fitting algorithm
then performs the algorithm while maintaining the position of the points that have been selected. The
method can yield better result especially when the curve is really jagged. The fully automatic curve
fitting also has a tendency to flatten the curvature slightly each time it is performed. The alternate
method of the user-guided smoothing guarantees that the curve’s full volume remains intact. The
selection of multiple points prior to the Smooth Curve command can be performed using any PDS tool
that allows multiple point selection using the SHIFT key, including the default pointer.

Another method is to use the DELETE key on the keyboard after highlighting all the points that are to

For PDS tools (such as Add Seam, Move Sections, Pivot, and Pivot Dart) that allow multiple
selections, the BACKSPACE key removes each selection at a time in the reverse order they were
selected. This can be particularly helpful with functions such as pivot, which allows up to 20 pairs of
