The Solar

System

Facts about Solar System
• The Solar System is a vast and mysterious place, filled with a wide variety of
fascinating objects and phenomena. From the massive and powerful sun at its center,
to the diverse array of planets, moons, comets, and asteroids that orbit it, there is
always something new and interesting to learn about this incredible place we call
home. In this article, we will explore 100 of the most fascinating facts about the
Solar System, delving into its history, geology, and physics to gain a deeper
understanding of the workings of our cosmic neighborhood.
How do you explain solar system for
kids ?
• The Solar System is made up of the Sun and all of the smaller objects
that move around it. Apart from the Sun, the largest members of the
Solar System are the eight major planets. Nearest the Sun are four fairly
small, rocky planets - Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars
Why it is Called Solar
System?

• There are many planetary

systems like ours in the universe,
with planets orbiting a host star.
Our planetary system is called
“the solar system” because we
use the word “solar” to describe
things related to our star, after
the Latin word for Sun, "solis."
• Five spacecraft have achieved enough velocity

our solar system. Two of them reached the

space? • Voyager 1 went interstellar in 2012
and Voyager 2 joined it in 2018. Both
spacecraft are still in communication with
Earth. Both spacecraft launched in 1977.
• NASA's New Horizons spacecraft is currently
exploring an icy region beyond Neptune
called the Kuiper Belt. It eventually will leave
our solar system.
• Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 also will ultimately
travel silently among the stars. The spacecraft
used up their power supplies decades ago.
What is a planet?
• This seemingly simple question doesn't have a simple answer. Everyone knows
that Earth, Mars and Jupiter are planets. But both Pluto and Ceres were once considered
planets until new discoveries triggered scientific debate about how to best describe
them—a vigorous debate that continues to this day. The most recent definition of a
planet was adopted by the International Astronomical Union in 2006. It says a planet must
do three things:
• It must orbit a star (in our cosmic neighborhood, the Sun).
• It must be big enough to have enough gravity to force it into a spherical shape.
• It must be big enough that its gravity cleared away any other objects of a similar size near
its orbit around the Sun.
• Discussion—and debate—will continue as our view of the cosmos continues to expand.

What is the Solar
System?
• Our solar system consists of our star, the
Sun, and everything bound to it by gravity –
the planets Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars,
Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune; dwarf
planets such as Pluto; dozens of moons; and
millions of asteroids, comets, and
meteoroids
