The Challenge: A paper-based system
that limited reporting capabilities
Pierre Perrier is the National Manager of
Transportation Safety at Purolator. He manages
a team of transportation safety specialists.
One of his goals is to prevent motor vehicle
collisions through the management of safe
driving programs. This is no small feat: Purolator
has more than 10,000 employees operating
over 5,000 vehicles, including courier vehicles,
straight trucks, highway trailers and tractors.
With all these motor vehicles on the road, it’s
imperative that Purolator can properly track
collisions in order to put preventative measures
in place. Prior to 2014, much of the data capture
was completed the old-fashioned way – on
paper. The company was challenged to track and
report on motor vehicle collisions. Preventing
collisions is obviously a major priority in the
transportation industry therefore Purolator
sought a more effective solution to analyze
motor vehicle collisions.

collisions per 100,000 kilometers travelled. “We
use collision frequency to gauge each facility’s
performance in preventing collisions and as an
industry benchmark. We also use Cority to track
the direct cause and types of collisions,” Pierre
says. “This allows us to focus our prevention
efforts on the leading types of collisions.” Using
this information, Pierre can create campaigns
to influence change in driver behaviors. “We
use reports extracted from Cority to assist in
determining trends based on historical data,” he
says.
And data is key. “Having moved from a paper
system to an electronic system allows us to
manage and filter our data more easily and we
can now capture the data required from our
front-end users through the use of mandatory
fields.” This means Pierre now captures more of
the data he actually wants to see.
The Results: 3.8% Reduction in
