● There was widespread discontent in Germany from 1919 to 1923. People were poor
and starving.
● Some Germans blamed the communists and Jews for losing the war.
● The Treaty of Versailles made living conditions worse and there were riots and
rebellions.
● Hitler was a right-wing supporter.
● The extreme left wanted a revolution. They were communists and the SPD.
● The right also rebelled against the government. They wanted a new right-wing
government.
● The right also assassinated the foreign Minister who was Jewish.
● Anti-semetic [ anti-Jewish ] feelings increased.
● In 1923, Germany couldn’t pay the reparation payments anymore [ the Treaty of
Versailles ].
● So, France and Belgium occupied the Ruhr [ the richest industrial part of Germany ]
instead, giving them access to Germany’s iron and coal reserves. The occupation led
to fury in Germany which caused a huge strike in the Ruhr.
● Germany then printed more money to try to solve the debt problem, which caused
hyperinflation.
● Germany’s currency became worthless.
● The Weimar republic were blamed.
