The digital age

For centuries people have incorporated art, culture and technology into their lives,

making the latter one of the inventions that has most revolutionized the world, and therefore has

evolved over the years to become what we know today as the "digital age" or "age of

technology", an era that encompasses the beginning, peak and culmination of the digital and

computer revolution of the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century, is given by a

series of events and milestones in technological progress oriented to computers and digital tools

(Llamas). The digital age came to change our lives, the business environment and benefit the

youngest.

Since people could see the first vestige of technology more than 50 years ago, they knew

that life as they knew it would change and we can confirm that today, where our computer, cell

phone, tablet, are essential for our daily activities and even to work, an example of this are the

influencers, who use social networks as a means to help people while making money; according

to Statista, there are over 2.6 billion Facebook, 1 billion Instagram, and 330 million Twitter users

in 2020 (Statista) and according to Techjury, there are 6.9 billion Google searches every day

(Petrov), more than half of these users are working people who, as a result of the pandemic, have

had to opt for other methods to carry out their work. Nowadays, for simple activities such as

cooking, cleaning, washing, playing games, among others, it is almost impossible for us to do

them if not with a phone to see recipes, a robot vacuum cleaner that cleans when programmed, a

washing machine or a video game console, devices that are created by companies to make our

lives easier while they go hand in hand with the change.

Within the economic aspect, companies, more than anything else, have also been part of

this digital age, as they have had to adapt to the requirements of people and continuously

innovate their products in order not to lose market share to other companies that are constantly

evolving. While it is true, when new technological products began to come to light, there were

people who believed that they were useless and would soon be discontinued, an example of this

is Clayton Christensen, who said at the time of its release that the iPhone “wasn’t truly

disruptive.” It was “a product that the existing players in the industry are heavily motivated to

beat,” and that “its probability of success is going to be limited (Denning). However, today

Apple is one of the most recognized brands worldwide and year after year earns millions of

dollars selling their products. Automobile companies, restaurant chains, hotels, among others, are

examples of industries that have had to adapt to the digital age, such as cars, in the digital age, a

car can shift from being a static mechanical transportation device to a dynamic entertainment and

business center on wheels that continues to evolve, long after the original purchase, as software

updates are streamed to the user over many years (Denning), today a car is no longer just a

means of transportation, it is much more than that, it can be a game room, a private cinema and

even a personal assistant. A clear example of how the things that the companies create have

become part of this digital era, in addition, those who create these impressive objects are young

people who knew how to take advantage of the benefits of technology.

Those who have benefited the most from this digital age have undoubtedly been the

younger generations, who are able to easily grasp the use of technological devices, more than

anything else the benefits that young people have is in the educational aspect. The internet is full

of resources for those who want to develop knowledge on their own, a quick Google search will

bring up thousands of free resources for subjects like math, science, history and languages,

resources that are often created by people who are passionate about the subject they are

interested in. teaching instead of teachers who meet the requirements, which helps students learn
3

in a better way (Fletcher), young people often learn certain topics in a better way when a person

who is not their teacher explains them to them, since those people may have a different and

easier way to explain it, for example, in mathematics there are different formulas to solve a

problem. problem, some are easier to understand than others, the important thing is that in the

end you reach the same result. During the pandemic, young people and people in general were

able to keep in touch with their family and friends in a safe way through the different existing

digital media and those that appeared as the days went by. While it is true that people believe

that technology in the hands of young people or children is dangerous for all the things that

sometimes happen, but with adult supervision these situations can be avoided and you can enjoy

the benefits that technology brings with it in a healthy way.

In conclusion, this digital age made us perform our daily activities differently, improved

the production of companies and is very useful for the development of young people, if people

had not adapted to the changes brought about by this digital age the world as we know it would

be different and activities as common as talking by video call with people who are far away from

us could not be carried out; changes are good and we must learn to be part of them, after all, the

digital age came to make our lives easier, and if we do not take advantage of what this age

brought with it, what can we expect from our future.
