Chapter I

The problem and its background

Background of the study

Family is the basic unit of society traditionally consisting of two

parents rearing their children. Family is a group of people who live together

as a single household and interact with one another in their respective

social roles, typically those of spouses, parents, children, and siblings. They

are bound together by their marriage, blood ties, or adoption. In addition,

family is a group of people who love and support one another despite

difficulties. It is not about having a biological connection; in fact, it is all

connected by a variety of forces and circumstances. A family tradition is an

annual event that is repeated with the aim of fostering closeness among

members and increasing family involvement. Families that share in their

own traditions provide a sense of comfort and security to their families,

especially the children involved. It enhance family and personal well-being

and can also add to the family identity. Strong family bonds are created and

reinforced with traditions that are upheld and maintained Lisa Cossey

(2019).

There is a lot of Filipino family tradition. First is the "Mano po" when

a young people greet or say goodbye to elders they typically do so by taking

the right hand of the elder with their right hand and touch the back the

elder's hand lightly on their forehead. It is a way of giving respect to the

elders and I believe that is also a way of receiving blessings from the elders.

Having fondness for family reunions during secular and religious holidays

such as Christmas, New Year’s eve, All Saints’ Day, Holy Week, Fiestas,

homecomings, birthdays, weddings, graduations, baptisms, funerals is

evidence that Filipino people valued not only our cultural tradition but the

spirit of our family. Filipinos, are blessed to have been brought up with

strong family ties. In addition to having close family ties, eating with your

hands or kamayan is another common Filipino tradition. For many

Filipinos, kamayan gives full taste to the food instead of using utensils.

Lastly, living with parents. Filipinos highly value the presence of family more

than anything. Adult children living with their parents are another Filipino

tradition that makes them exceptional. Unlike in the United States where

children leave the home after finishing high school or college, many Filipinos

continue living with parents until they get married Cecil abundo (2015).

Family tradition are passed down from generation to generation, they create

a sense of belongingness, bring families together, and reinforce important

family values and beliefs. One of these are the Ilocano family,

One of the ethnic groups in the Philippines is the Ilocano. Ilocano’s

have many traditions, customs, and beliefs. First, a courtship develops

during casual talks and trips to the girl's house, where the boy gets to know

the girl and her family better. Ilocanos are also known for their lengthy

courtships, which they use to confirm their own affections for one another.

The first stage of courtship involves casual chats and trips to the girl's

house where the boy gets to know the girl and her family better. Another

way for Ilocanos to express their love is through the harana, or serenate in

English. In this tradition, a boy invites his friends to sing love songs to his

beloved woman while she sleeps on a beautiful night. Once formed, the

relationship is maintained with extreme tenacity. The young lady must

continue to be honorable and decent. Tradition strongly dictates that women

keep their virginity until marriage; otherwise, they risk facing grave

repercussions like exclusion from the community or familial disapproval. In

this area, ilocano refer to their funeral and burial customs as pompon,

which is Filipino for "burial rites." When a man passes away, his wife

prepares the body by dressing it in a particular clothing. She does this

because they think ghosts of the dead can communicate with her in the

hereafter. The body is then placed in a coffin that has been placed in the

middle of the home. After that, she starts an atong, a wood log that burns

continuously throughout the wake, in front of the house. Chanting is often

used while sobbing, which honors the dead and secures their passage to

heaven. The deceased's close relatives are prohibited from working. They are

thus unable to carry any heavy goods or cook. Another, an atang is a

traditional food gift made to fend off evil spirits. The most popular atang

among Ilocanos is a rice cake, also known as sinukat or sinuman. Atang

could be a harvest sacrifice. And typically, Ilocanos will provide tang to

commemorate and demonstrate that even if their loved ones have passed

away, they are still significant and remain in our hearts. The ag"GULGUL" of

the Ilocanos is an Ilocano tradition in which people wash their heads,

generally in a river or the sea, after a family member has been buried. It's

thought that doing this helps the grieving family members wash their

sorrows away. Moreover, to purge the illness and negative karma connected

to the loss of the family member.

The researchers claims that the ilocano family tradition is deeply

rooted in the cultural practices of the ilocanos, an ethnic group in the

philippines that primarily resides in the northern regions of Luzon island.

This tradition places great emphasis on the importance of family ties, with

family members working together and supporting each other in all aspect of

life. The effects of this tradition can be seen among grade 11 students,

particularly in senior high school students at Quezon National High School,

as many of them come from Ilocano families. They have been raised with a

strong sense of unity and respect for their elders, which translates in to

their behavior and attitudes towards their peers and teachers. This tradition

has also instilled in them a sense of responsibility towards their family and

community, which motivates them to work hard and strive for success in

their academic and personal endeavors. Overall, the Ilocano family tradition

has a significant impact on the values and behaviors of the grade 11

students at Quezon National High School contributing to their overall

development as individuals and members of the society.

Conceptual framework

Family traditions are essential to the progress of humanity because, in

order to advance, individual must rely on an understanding of a higher

meaning and purpose. People should hold them in their hearts and consider

them to be valuable. Traditions and customs are more than sufficient, and

they have both positive and negative aspects. Therefore, if people interact

and remove barriers between one another, society will be better. Family

members may or may not live together, be legally recognized, or be

biologically related. (Raney, 2015). The television program Modern Family

depicts the complexities of a family in the twenty-first century as well as

how customs and culture have changed over time."Family arrangements

that are more diverse and fluid are becoming accepted as the norm, rather

than the usual two parents and two kids. By extending beyond the nuclear

family structure, many cultures do not recognize the concepts of immediate

or extended family. Instead, they believe that all kin are family. (Raney,

2015).

Traditions within the family show not only the time spent together but also

the quality of the time and passion invested in them. Because of those, kids

can grow up in an environment where they can grasp what's expected of

them for their age and learn how to be independent and form relationships.

As kids learn to stick to the same daily life, they gain the sense of security

that encourages trust and self-confidence. The ideal situations for naturally

occurring episodes where caregivers can educate and inculcate social and

emotional skills that develop socially competent adults who positively

contribute to society are provided by family traditions and practices. Daily

familial traditions include things like bedtime rituals and father-daughter

handshakes. There are also those that occur on a weekly basis, such as

game night or Saturday morning cartoons, and those that occur once a year,

such as taking the same posed photo at each school dance or going to your

grandmother's former home to celebrate her birthday. Every family has its

own unique traditions and practices. Similar to this is the tradition of

Ilocano’s, family gatherings for wakes and funerals are times for crying,

laughing, and feasting. Meat is the main course at feasts, which is a

reflection of the underlying cultural value of sharing blood and meat to

strengthen ties to one's kin. Upon the arrival of relatives, the joyful

atmosphere of reunions may be punctuated by unexpected tears. However,

there are broader illustrations of how to implement constructive

relationships. Plan regular family dinners and make sure everyone in the

family understands the value of them as a good time to start. Research has

shown that family dinners improve kids' motivation, help them form a good

identity, and cut down on risky conduct. Additionally, adopting rituals

specific to particular holidays and commemorating milestones as a family

can aid in the development of children's social and emotional identities as

well as the identity of the family as a whole. Children will learn valuable

family values, communication skills, how to care for and support loved ones,

reflective thinking, teamwork, and other skills through these instances.

Family traditions have the ability to promote favorable outcomes for young

children, adolescents, and adults. They offer definite and dependable family

interaction patterns that, in the end, promote the full and healthy

development of children. For the best consequences, however, the caliber of

family rituals and customs counts more than the quantity of time spent

together.

Overall, traditions give children a sound sense of self at an early age that

they can continue to develop as they get older. Family ties are strengthened

by traditions. Family members might trust one another more because of

established traditions. These customs give families a regular opportunity to

engage and lay a strong foundation. It's a time to connect generations and

transmit cultural, social, or religious legacy. As a matter of fact, a study

conducted by Ann Buchanan, professor and director of the Centre for

Research into Parenting and Children in the Department of Social Policy and

Social Work at the University of Oxford, "showed that a high level of grand-

parental involvement increases the well-being of children" and also results

in fewer emotional and behavioral issues. This study investigated the

conceptual frameworks that researchers have used to describe and explain

Ilocano Family Tradition: it's effects to the Grade 11 students at Quezon

National High School to create a snap shot of the conceptual frameworks

used during this span of time. Research on family–school partnerships is

interdisciplinary, and, although many researchers have described their

conceptual approaches and a number of different concept have been

employed, little has been written regarding to Ilocano Family Tradition: it's

effects to the Grade 11 students at Quezon national High School.

Family tradition

Family traditions are a model of interaction between parents and

children in everyday life that have been tested by previous generations.

According to family tradition a profession was handed down from

grandfather to father, from father to son. In the traditional family, an

important unifying factor is a mutual activity. Rural family worked together

on the field, the family in cities was involved either in trade or a craft. The

main feature of family values, their essential difference from the other

components of parenthood is that all three components are emotions alloy,

feelings, beliefs, and behavioral manifestations, that is, the components

connection with each other is very strong and the impact on one of them

directly affects the others (Zakirova et al., 2016. Family traditions have

always been a valuable tool for parents and elders to carry out the

responsibility of raising children and inculcating into them social values and

ethos. Family traditions ensure that the warmth and closeness of family

bondage grow. In the modern context, maintenance of and developing family

traditions continue to be as significant as they were at the earliest times.

Active family traditions and meaningful participation in them help families

to avoid social entropy. In physical science, the term entropy means the

tendency of the physical system to lose energy and coherence over a period

of time, like a gas dissipating until it is all but gone. An "entropic family" is

one that loses its sense of emotional closeness because members neglect the

family’s inner life and community ties.

Wolin and Bennett (2016) claim that family traditions are interactions

that have a pattern and are repeated over time. On the On the one hand, the

idea of patterned interactions makes sense. study on families has identified

specific patterns of conduct that are either harmful or beneficial of family

tradition and familial structure. In some instances, the extent to which

Traditions were examined because they were significant, and sometimes the

Examined was the symbolic role that traditions played in family life. Family

traditions were considered to be crucial in providing closeness, bolstering of

familial ties, and emotional sustaining familial ties, stability, and exchange

(Meske et al., 2017), and by presenting chances to develop uniquein single-

parent families at times (Olson & Haynes, 2016).

Effects on Discipline

Tradition has an impact on our development from the time of birth

and continues to do so as we mature. For instance, culture can have an

impact on how children develop their beliefs, language, values, and sense of

who they are as people and as members of society. These cultural influences

can be transmitted to children in a variety of ways, including through their

parents, their surroundings, and the media. A child's growth can be

influenced by society's understanding of different traditions in a variety of

ways, such as how confident they feel in themselves or how at ease

socializing with others as adults.

The development of children can be impacted by a parent's. For instance, a

2019 study discovered that traditions frequently affect how parents raise

their kids, including how they discipline and set boundaries. It seems

natural that parents rear their kids according to social influences as they're

preparing them to acquire the behaviors required to function and succeed in

that community. Developmental problems can, however, occur when the

home culture and the social environment diverge.

According to the 2019 study previously mentioned, parents from

collectivist societies discipline their children differently than parents from

individualistic society. The previous set of parents may punish their kids by

denying them access to something important to them. Parents from

collectivist societies, on the other hand, might advise their kids to consider

the implications of their behavior.

When parents or educators discipline kids in accordance with the

dominant tradition—the individualistic culture of the United States—rather

than the traditions of their family of origin, it can have an impact on the

development of the child. When a teacher encourages students to be

competitive, for instance, youngsters whose parents have trained them to

value collaboration over competition may get confused or irritated.

Interaction with parents teaches kids how to behave. For this reason, a

child's behavior is frequently influenced by their parents' cultural

upbringing. An illustration is communication style. Children frequently

mimic their parents' communication style and people from different

backgrounds interact and explain things in various ways. Children that

adopt an individualistic cultural model of communication will frequently tell

lengthy, ego-centered tales with themes of independence and personal

preference. On the other hand, children who communicate using a

collectivist traditional model frequently tell short stories that focus on others

and have themes of authority and interpersonal relationships. Student’s

self-discipline has shown to have a significant impact on academic

performance (Anila, 2016; did two longitudinal studies to investigate the

impact of self-discipline on academic achievements. In the two studies, self-

discipline and self-control were used interchangeably, and were both defined

as “the ability to suppress proponent responses in the service of a higher

goal and further specifying that such a choice is not automatic but rather

requires conscious effort” In addition, when parents are involved in the

learning of their children, they facilitate learning at home (Cabus & Aries,

2017). This is very crucial especially for students who need extended time to

meet educational goals. The factor of decision making includes involving

parents in developing mission statements and improving school policies

which affect students and families. Also, there is need for collaboration

among families, school and communities.

These traditions may effects on children's language development may

benefit or hurt them. Children will be more likely to receive the acceptance

and respect they need to grow and develop if their heritage is acknowledged

at school, especially how they verbally engage with others. They have a

higher likelihood of developing into confident people with a positive self-

image who can have constructive interactions. If not, though, they can grow

up to be adults who are afraid to speak up and be heard for fear of being

mocked or misinterpreted.

Effects on Family orientation

Family tradition affect children’s learning behaviors and academic

achievement in important ways, as they are the primary and most

significant environments that the children are exposed to (Li 2016).shows

that families may play even more important roles in student’s academic

achievement than schools and communities. Since then, the line of

empirical research on family background and children’s achievement has

found that the family social economic statuses may affect children’s

academic achievements more than the impact of schools.

Filipinos are said to value and take good care of their family. Although

there are times when family ties are so strong that they lead to conflicts

between other families, these conflicts also paradoxically represent the

closeness of Filipino family members. Dizon et al (2015) state that it is very

evident in the Philippines that close-knit families demonstrate their deep

love for each member, such as spouse, children, parents, siblings,

grandparents and other relatives. One’s family is the source of personal

identity, emotional and material support, and one’s main commitment and

responsibility. Genuine concern for the family is manifested in the honor

and respect given to parents and elders, in the support and care extended to

children and in the great sacrifices one endures for the welfare of the family.

It is ordinary for Filipinos to take care of their aging parents at home. This

family orientation makes every member develop a feeling of belongingness

and sense of safety and security.

According to Andres (2016, 2018) this trait is a strong and innate

characteristic of a Filipino. Wherever he or she is, family ties remain.

Filipinos value family so much that they die without them on their sides. As

much, they keep them on their sight by helping them as much as they can

to prevent loved ones from leaving them. They prioritize their family more

than their profession. Whenever a family member is in danger, someone else

from a family tends to leave classes, work, or important meeting just to

reach him or her out and is willing to sacrifice himself or herself for the

family. This is always in the minds of every Filipino to act as parents and do

the similar job for them, and eventually when it is witnessed by their young

ones, this will be inherited by them. And the cycle remains. This type of

relationship with parents among Filipinos is unique in the world. Although it

can also be seen somewhere else like in South Korea or in Vietnam, but the

Filipinos have distinct characteristics of what it is like to take care of a

family.

Family traditions

Researchers found that the practice of family tradition played a large

and crucial protective function in boosting social connectivity for youths and

for reducing their sensations of anxiety in a 2015 study including roughly

250 teens (aged 15-20). People who took part in family traditions also had

lower depression rates. It appears that the sense of family ties and traditions

offers solid foundations for our kids' self-esteem and wellbeing to grow and

develop, as well as safeguards them from the difficulties that so many

teenagers go through.

Traditions should be enjoyable, easy to follow, and created to

strengthen our bonds with the people we love. They should also help us

recognize the distinctiveness of our family identity. Take care when spending

time with your family. Find a technique to routinely repeat enjoyable things

you observe so they become a part of your family's culture. The benefits of

starting a new tradition will soon start to be felt!. Traditions served family as

a source of strength; they gave families a sense of identity and of faith. Now

when so much is changing, traditions still give family members strength and

stability, as well as a sense of certainty in family love when life may seem

full of uncertainty. Traditions give you a sense of family and they give you a

sense of belonging to a group of people, not being alone in the world: a

dinner together. Praying together, observing holidays, and holding family

celebrations for birthdays, anniversaries, and accomplishments bring

closeness and unity to the family. Family members who were interviewed for

this study spoke of their traditions as an anchor in hard times, as another

mother explained: At the time of a huge event, like a death, or a birth,

traditions can carry you through. The traditions that you have are just like a

wonderful cocoon that you feel wrapped up in and comforted by traditions

help you know that life goes on. Traditions also help to preserve the families

story. Families are eager to share their memories and experiences; the

process of telling their stories seems to bring them together as they laugh

and remember, Sharing the story of a child's birth or ever, a trip to the

emergency room reinforces the sense of family, even though some family

stories are more sober than others.

Effects on Discipline

According to longitudinal research tracking the impact of physical

discipline, spanking causes children's behavior issues to worsen over time

(Maguire-Jack, Gromoske, & Berger, 2015). These behavior issues then

prompt more spanking, which causes even more behavior issues.

(MacKenzie, Nicklas, & Brooks-Gunn & Waldfogel, 2015). Parents' affection

toward their children does not always counteract the need for physical

discipline. Parental warmth does not mitigate the association between

Gershoff, 2016). (Lee, Altschul, Gershoff, 2013). Spanking resulted in

longer-term increased internalizing and externalizing problems for both

African-American and Hispanic children (Coley, Kull, and Currano, 2014),

and such findings of worse outcomes following physical discipline were

identified for both white and African-American children (Gershoff & Grogan-

Kaylor, 2016).

On the part of a student, self-discipline involves focusing on activities that

are helpful in attaining academic success, such as completing school

assignments on time, reviewing notes, listening to teachers in class instead

of engaging in tendencies that destruct from accomplishing academic

assignments. For most middle and high school students, playing games,

watching entertainment programs on television or texting friends is more

exciting than solving math problems or studying history chapters to

complete class assignments. Yet, students need to spend more time on

school work than they do on entertainments in order to excel in school

(Duckworth & Seligman, 2016).

The factor of decision making includes involving parents in developing

mission statements and improving school policies which affect students and

families. Also, there is need for collaboration among families, school and

communities. Collaboration with the community calls for the whole

community to get involved in order to support the school by utilizing all

resources at their disposal (Epstein, 2018). With this kind of involvement,

students receive the help and assistance they need to achieve academic

success.

Effects on Family orientation

Lumpkin, Martin, and Vaughn (2008) suggest that tradition is an

underlying aspect of family orientation and the main characteristic of the

family system. Traditions are passed on within families through sharing

family histories repetitively and ancestors' contributions are recognized.

Rituals and routines also part of family tradition. Instrumental goals are

attained using family routines. Rituals are essential to maintaining a family

relationship. Thus, the emotional support provided by rituals and other

tradition is more likely to be valued by individuals who have strong family

orientation, rather than those with low family orientation. Role

identification, rituals, routines, shared history, shared meaning, and family

legacy are the character of tradition (Burch, Batchelor, Burch, & Heller,

2015). Family tradition does not only play a pivotal role in the intention to

start a new business but also to risk-taking propensity (Altinay, Madanoglu,

Daniele, & Lashley, 2012). Children of a business family may grow up in the

tradition of business and acquire skill by being on the track with their

families (Groothuis & Groothuis, 2007). Trust is reflected by an eagerness

to meet expectations, confidences sharing, backing each other, and act with

a system that recognized fairness. Fulfilled obligations will create a sense of

safety within a family. Individuals that trust each other within the family

tend to have strong family orientation since cohesion and security are

provided in the family system. Trust is essential to promote selling

capability, which affects firm performance (Pratono, 2018). A loss of trust

causing cohesion and support needed to keep interdependency of emotional

system break (Lumpkin, Martin, & Vaughn, 2008). Safety, security,

protection, fairness, reciprocity, and trustworthiness are the characteristics

of trust (Burch, Batchelor, Burch, & Heller, 2015). It becomes a general

mechanism for informal cooperation that able to substitute the need to use

formal control of the actions and interaction in a transacting organization

(Hadjielias & Poutziouris, 2015). The trust made individuals become

selfless, which lead to strengthening their desire to cooperate together.

A sense of duty, obligation, indebtedness, and commitment along with

the priority of togetherness are the characteristics of loyalty (Burch,

Batchelor, Burch, & Heller, 2015). Loyalty is likely to be experienced by

individuals that have strong family orientation, which have a sense of

commitment and duty. Filial loyalty is expected from the children.

Maintaining the family and loyalty are expected from family members as a

social group.

The aim of this study is to determine the effects of Family tradition to

the grade 11 students of Quezon National High School. In order to obtain

the needed data and information for the study, the researchers will use

survey questionnaires as the main research instrument . The researchers

will also use structured type of questions to provide fixed response for the

respondents. The questionnaires are accredited by putting check on the

drop down question. The questionnaires will be answered through Liker-type

scale.

Data gathering procedure

Before gathering of data from the respondents, the survey

questionnaires will be checked by the research adviser for validity. A

permission letter will be sent to the principal of the school. Upon approval,

the researchers will ask for the cooperation of the respondents to answer the

survey questionnaires. The answer of the respondents will be recorded,

interpreted, and analyzed after they take the test. The researchers ensure

the confidentiality of all personal information and anything of respondents.

The participation of each respondent will be voluntary and free from

pressure.

Statistical tool

In order to analyze and interpret the data, the Frequency Count, Weighted

Arithmetic mean, and Arithmetic Mean, for independent samples will be

utilized. The frequency count will be used to tally the number of responses

depending on the weight established by researchers using the rating scale.

Researchers will utilize the mean to the determine the Ilocano Family

Tradition: Its effects to the of grade 11 students at Quezon National High

School.

The formula read:

X = ⅀x/ N

Where X represents the arithmetic mean, ⅀x represents the sum of

scores/ratings, and N indicates the total number of cases.

In Weighted Arithmetic mean, the different weights set by the

researchers are multiplied by their respective frequencies or number of

responses, then the products are added and the sum of the products then

divided by the overall number of frequencies or responses. The formula was:

W=⅀fx

Where the W represents the weighted arithmetic mean, fx

represents the sum of the product of frequencies and provided weights, and

f indicates the total number of frequencies or responses.

In order to determine the level of acceptance, the researchers will

utilized the scale provided in the table below.
