Laboratory Exercise #6
Configuring IP Addresses and Subnet Masks on the Hosts
Objectives:

At the end of the laboratory, the students should be able to:

• Configure IP addresses and Subnet Masks on the Hosts

Materials:

• Computer installed with Cisco Packet Tracer

Procedures:

Note: Please observe safety procedures and proper handling of equipment or materials
while conducting this laboratory exercise. This exercise is to be performed under an
Instructor’s supervision.

1. Click the Start menu or double-click the Desktop icon shown below to
open/launch the Packet Tracer from your Windows computer.

2. Start creating a network by first selecting and clicking the End Devices icon (

) in the Device – Type Selection Box.


3. Add a Generic PC (PC-PT) to the workspace by clicking and dragging the
aforementioned device from the Device – Type Selection box to your chosen
location in the workspace.

4. Repeat process 3. This results to figure below.

5. Select and click the Hubs icon ( ) in the Device – Type Selection Box and
add a Generic Hub (Hub-PT) under the two Generic PCs as shown in the figure
below.

6. Preform the following steps below to connect PC0 to Hub0.

a. Click the Connections icon ( ) from the Device – Type Selection Box
b. Click once on the Copper Straight-Through cable
c. Click once on PC0
d. Choose Fast Ethernet
e. Drag the Cursor to Hub0
f. Click once the Hub0 and choose Port0

7. Repeat the steps above for PC1 connecting it to Port1 on Hub0. (The actual hub
port you choose does not matter.)
8. Add another Generic PC (PC-PT) beside PC-PT (PC1) workspace by clicking and
dragging the aforementioned device from the Device – Type Selection Box to your
chosen location in the workspace.

9. Repeat procedure 8. This results to figure below:

10. Select and click the Switches icon ( ) in the Device – Type Selection Box
and add a Generic Switch (Switch-PT) under the two Generic PCs (PC2 and PC3)
as shown in the figure below:

11. Perform the following steps to connect PC2 to Switch0 as shown in the figure
below:

a. Click on the Connections icon ( from the Device – Type Selection Box
b. Click once on the Copper Straight-Through Cable
c. Click once on PC2
d. Choose FastEthernet
e. Drag the cursor to Switch0
f. Click once on Switch0 and choose FastEthernet0/1

12. Repeat the steps above for PC3 connecting to Port3 on Switch0 on Port
FastEthernet0/2. (The actual switch port you choose does not matter.)
13. Click once on PC0.

14. Choose the Config tab and add an IP Address of 192.168.1.1 to the Gateway
textbox.
15. Click on FastEthernet and add an IP Address of 192.168.1.10 to the IP Address
textbox. Click once in the Subnet Mask field to enter the default Subnet Mask.
16. Repeat these steps for the other hosts. Use the information below for IP Addresses
and Subnet Masks.
Host IP Address Subnet Mask
PC0 192.168.1.10 255.255.255.0
PC1 192.168.1.11 255.255.255.0
PC2 192.168.1.12 255.255.255.0
PC3 192.168.1.13 255.255.255.0

17. To make a connection between the Hub0 and Switch0, click the Connections icon

( ) from the Device – Type Selection Box and then, select the Copper Cross-
over cable (dashed line).
18. Move the connections cursor over Hub0 and click once. And then, move the
connections cursor to Switch0.
19. Click once on Switch0 and choose FastEthernet0/3 (actual port does not matter).
20. Switch to Simulation Mode by selecting the tab that is partially hidden behind the
Real Time tab in the bottom right-hand corner.
21. Click on Edit Filters, and then select All/None to deselect every filter. Then choose
ARP and ICMP and click in the workspace to close the Edit Filters window.

22. Select a Simple PDU by clicking the closed envelope ( ) in the Common
Tools Bar on the right.
23. Move to PC0 and click to establish the source. Move to PC1 and click to establish
the destination. What have you noticed? Record your observation in the space
provided.

24. Choose the Reset Simulation button in the Simulation window. What have you

25. Select Capture / Forward from the Simulation Panel Play Controls. What have you

26. Choose the Power Cycle Devices button on the bottom left, above the device
icons. And then, choose Yes. What have you noticed? Record your observation
in the space provided.

27. Choose the Auto Capture / Play button and allow the simulation to run
completely.
28. Click on PC-0 and select the Desktop tab.
29. Select the Command Prompt and type the command arp –a. What have you
