The Wildlife Institute of India, an autonomous institution of the Ministry of
Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Government of India is a premier national
institute for training, research and advisory services in the field of wildlife
conservation and management. The institute hosts a Wildlife Institute of India -
Category 2 Centre (WII-C2C) for World Natural Heritage Management in Asia & the
Pacific, under the auspices of UNESCO, with a mission to strengthen
implementation of the UNESCO World Heritage Convention in the Asia-Pacific
region. Being the world’s first centre on natural heritage conservation, it aims to
build capacity of heritage professionals, foster international cooperation and
contribute to systematic representation of properties with outstanding universal

About the Course


The WII-C2C is introducing a 6-week residential Certificate Course in Heritage
Management beginning 7th August, 2023. This short course will equip the officer
trainees and heritage practitioners in attendance with a functional understanding of
the core principles and theory of heritage and the ability to incorporate the same
into their management plans making them robust and future-ready.

Course Objectives
The growing importance of heritage conservation as an academic subject and a
management mandate in national and international agendas indicates a need for
professionals to be trained in its approaches. The CCHM has been initiated with the
aim to equip trainees with the concepts, theories and practices implemented in the
multi-disciplinary field of heritage conservation, with a focus on natural heritage.
The 6 week CCHM aims to train staff in practical management of heritage imparting
knowledge in the basics of heritage conservation, it helps the trainees to understand
the `whys’ and `hows’ of Management Plan prescriptions and learn techniques for
implementing them.
Course Fees
The cost of the course will be borne by WII-C2C funds. Candidates will bear their
own travel expenses for arriving at and departure from WII Dehradun. No Dearness
Allowance will be admissible for the candidates over the course duration. Other
heritage professionals may be included on payment basis.

Eligibility
The Certificate Course is established to serve the needs of current and potential
managers of natural heritage sites, forest and wildlife department officers of ranks
of the Assistant Conservator of Forests (ACF) and Deputy Conservator of Forests
(DCF) or their equivalents from India. Heritage professionals from other
departments, institutions and organizations may also be potential participants on
payment basis and availability of seats. Capacity of the course is up to 15
participants for this fully residential programme. Educational qualification will be at
least graduation level. Minimum work experience will be required. Good
communication skills in English are an important consideration for selection.
Candidates must be physically fit to be able to undertake the field tours and travel.

Duration and Nomination


The course is planned from 7th August, 2023 and concludes on 18th September,
2023 over a six-week duration. The nomination process will generally be through the
respective State Government Department. Admissions will be made on a `first-
come-first serve’ basis subject to fulfilling of the laid down eligibility criteria.

Attendance
Participation in all sections of the course, tours, excursions, lectures, practical
classes, examinations, group discussions, symposia etc is compulsory.

Boarding and Lodging


Boarding and lodging facilities in the WII Guesthouse will be provided by the
Institute for the entire duration of the Course.
Course Contents
Through the theoretical and methodological integration of ecological sciences,
social sciences and humanities, heritage conservation is poised to provide unique
solutions which fulfil the requirements of socio-economic wellbeing and
environmental integrity. The 6-week CCHM course will begin with a module on the
concepts and conventions of heritage providing a base for the trainees to build their
understanding better. The intent would be to understand the principles,
philosophies, and history behind the heritage conservation movement with a focus
on international conventions and the emerging domain of nature-culture linkages.
Besides this module, two other modules – one on heritage management and the
other on heritage communication & outreach – will be taken up. The former will
guide the trainees to acquire and apply methods used for heritage management
through theory, practical and detailed case studies. The latter will see the trainees
apply effective techniques of heritage communication through the study of visual
design principles, communication best practices and successful ecodevelopment
initiatives. Four working weeks of these lectures will be ably supported by a mix of
activities and day excursions to complement the same. The course will conclude in a
10 days field tour to heritage sites of significance for the candidates to apply their
learnings from the tour.

The course curriculum is divided into 03 components and 4 units. Each unit is
covered in 15 lecture sessions.

Learning Outcomes
After actively participating in the course the participants will have acquired:
1) Better knowledge of concepts, theories and practices implemented in the multi-
disciplinary field of heritage conservation.
2) Skills to identify stakeholders in management of World Heritage Sites in the region
3) Ability to promote integrated and sustainable management of World Heritage
Sites with participation of tourism, communities, species recovery programs and
other national level conservation programs
4) Techniques for monitoring change indicators and assessing the carrying capacity
5) Practical understanding of heritage practice through experiential learning in an
interactive environment
