1940s
- Sky trains were purchased for the international routes.
- The first scheduled flight took place to Cairo via Asmara in
Douglas C-47 Skytrain.
- Weekly services to Djibouti and Aden followed, as well as a
domestic service to Jimma.
1950s
- Services to Bombay were withdrawn in July 1950.
- A new service to Athens via Khartoum and Wadi Halfa was
launched on 3 April 1954.
- On 4 June, the aircraft was destroyed by fire on 10 Jul in an
accident in Sudan.
- On 23 May 1958, flights to Wadi Halfa were terminated.
1980s-1990s
- The DHC-5 Buffalo entered Ethiopian's fleet in the early 1980s.
- In 1982, Ethiopian became the first African carrier in ordering
the Boeing 767.
- In 1990, Ethiopian became the first passenger airline in taking
delivery of the Boeing 757 Freighter, receiving the first of
five Boeing 757-200s a year later.
2000s-Now
- A fleet renewal started in the early 2000s.
- In late September 2010, Ethiopian Airlines was officially invited to
join Star Alliance under the mentoring of Lufthansa.
- In 2007 Ethiopian secured the IATA-IOSA registration certificate
as a result of "the Airline’s fundamental commitment to provide
safe and reliable air transport services for passengers and cargo".
- In 2008 Ethiopian entered into a code share agreement with
Lufthansa.
- In 2009 Ethiopian ordered 35 new airplanes direct from the
manufacturers. Including the orders of five B777-200LR and
twelve A350-900, Ethiopian has also on order ten Boeing B787
and eight Bombardier aircrafts.
- In 2009 Ethiopian Airlines and ASKY signed a management
contract which enables Ethiopian Airlines to manage ASKY for a
period of five years.
- In 2010 Ethiopian Airlines has entered into a code share agreement
with Scandinavian Airlines.
- In 2011 Ethiopian received three Boeing 777-200LLRs in 2011
increasing the total number of 777-200LRs to five.
- In 2012 Ethiopian established its Second Hub in Lome – Togo.
Also, Ethiopian received five different awards during 2012.
- In 2013 Ethiopian started new services to Blantyre, Ndola -
Zambia, Seoul - South Korea, Enugu-Nigeria, Sao Paulo Rio de
Janeiro – Brazil, Niamey-Niger, Singapore, Semere-
Ethiopia. Ethiopian also increased its five weekly flights to Abuja
to daily service.
- In 2013 Singapore Airlines and Ethiopian Airlines entered into
codeshare agreement.
- In 2014 Ethiopian started new services to Doha-Qatar, Vienna-
Austria, Kano-Nigeria, Shanghai-China, Bale Robe & Kombolcha
-Ethiopia. Ethiopian also launched four daily flights to Nairobi and
daily flights to London.Ethiopian strategic partner for the southern
Africa region, Malawian Airlines launcehed its first international
flight to Johannesburg.
- In 2018 Ethiopian has signed an Agreement with Guinea Airlines,
for strategic partnership in management, maintenance and training,
on January 30, 2018 at Ethiopian headquarters.
- In 2019 Ethiopian and Hibret Bank have launched the first Co-
branded debit card tailored to provide Ethiopian Sheba Miles
members with bonus miles for their spending using the debit card.
