Design Note for Elevator Pressurization
(1) Stairwell pressurization
(2) Zoned smoke control
(3) Elevator smoke control
(4) Vestibules
(5) Smoke refuge areas.
From the above it is mentioned that smoke control of a building can be one or a
combination of the all of them. From our HVAC point of view, we have applied items
number one and 2 where we have stair well pressurization and zoned smoke control as
indicated in the other attachments, therefore no need to apply the Elevator
pressurization as well to avoid having many interacting systems in the same tine in case
of fire.
In addition as per NFPA 92A, item A.5.4. Several methods of correcting the issue of stack effect
and elevator pressurization have been proposed and investigated. These methods include the
following:
(1) Exhaust of the fire floor
(2) Pressurization of enclosed elevator lobbies
(3) Construction of smoke‐tight elevator lobbies
(4) Pressurization of the elevator hoist way
(5) Closing of elevator doors after automatic recall
In our project we applied from the above number (1) as we have a dedicated smoke
extraction / exhaust from the fire floor in addition to that closing of elevator doors after
automatic recall can be considered during the programming of the elevators operation.
Taking into considerations that the buildings of the project are not high rise buildings,
they are all of the low rise ones since the maximum floor levels are 5 including the Roof
level.
