Ek ruka hua faisla More than the movie, the dialogues associated with characters still linger.

Each character depicted their mindset and attitude towards different issues. The nature of each character is slowly revealed through the process of

the discussions which reflected their personal beliefs, convictions, notions, idiosyncrasies, prejudices, and cultural and social background. The importance of Transactional Analysis was apparent in knowing the response of the characters in different environments. As discussed in the class, the ego-state were as follows: Parent (Critical parent, Nurturing parent), Adult, Child (natural child, little professor, Adapted child). Based on their discussion, each juror invoked different ego states in different situations as in terms of their concept in life, their basic behavior and when it came to heated argument. The protagonist in the movie, the initial objector was in Adult ego state. Every single argument from his mouth was logically supported by argument. At the same time people were not able to control their ego state when faced with clashes. The importance of 3 kinds of transactions; i) reciprocal/complementary ii) Crossed iii) Duplex/Covert is highly visible in the conversation. The instances of crossed and duplex transaction were the reason of shortfall of building any consensus. But these conflicts of interest were short term because when it comes to the saving of life of an individual, logical and prudent approach qualifies to be the sole savior. A Team has the powerful influence in changing the mindset of people. When 6 people were in support of not guilty, the addition of 3 more people in the majority became easy because this majority effect, which formed just now, was strong enough to bring the required change in the perception of the others jurors . The film provided an insight into how our group actually works. There were few parallels to be drawn from the movie. As in the movie, our study group had people from different backgrounds and with different ideologies. It is important to realize that people who are not as vocal about their thoughts can also make a significant contribution to the group. It is therefore necessary to welcome everyone and seek their opinion before taking a final call on any issue. It was also observed in the movie that there were members who were not interested in the proceedings and just wanted to get the thing done with. Similarly we had few meetings when all the people were not interested in the discussion. In those cases we tried to assign each other different task because we usually have 2-3 assignments per day. People showing interest in a particular subject were given the responsibility to complete the assignment. That saved us a lot of time. Another important lesson that the movie taught us was that at the end of the day, logic always prevails. It thus becomes necessary in the group that people act as much as possible from their Adult ego state and think rationally. This helps in not only finding the best solution to the problems that the group is trying to solve, it also brings in a new level of maturity in the thinking of the members, preparing them for their future endeavours. Our group had people who thought from Adult ego state most of the times, so we were pretty good in carrying out our discussions. In the movie, we also realized that there are people in the group who in certain situations think themselves to be the best judge. In such cases, it is generally observed that other group members stop questioning and just tend to flow along. This can be detrimental in achieving the best results as there is no fresh perspective. Our group encouraged everybody equally to participate as much as possible, there was no case of feeling left alone. It actually helped us in proper brainstorming before coming to any decision.

Ek ruka hua faisla Added: Few important stages of discussion

1. Planning: The discussion was planned in the mind of Protagonist. There was no intention to discuss the case in the committee, but this initiator planned this strategy accordingly and the strategy led to discussion. In our group, Ashutosh and Abhiram took most of the planning part of the discussion.

2. ORGANIZING: After the strategy of discussion was implemented the protagonist was handling and controlling the committee organized the entire discussion. He organized the voting process and discussion. In our group, we did not go for voting system to come to any decision. One of the reason could be it is very time taking. Second is that the dominant party gets the final say and the other partys point is overlooked.

3. LEADING: We observed that the protagonist disagreed initially with the decision because the proof for the decision making was not satisfactory according to him. This dissatisfaction leads him to convince the other team mates to discuss more about this case and he required many logical points to reach to one particular conclusion. In our group, Ashutosh and Abhiram took most of the responsibility in leading the discussion and arriving at a solution.

4. CONTROLLING: One more observation about the protagonist was that he controlled the entire discussion. This individual was the one, who actually handled the whole decision making process. Our group did not have any need of controlling because everybody was in the adult state most of the times.

We also realized that like in the movie it is necessary for one of the members to take charge of the group meetings and carry out the proceedings. Though it was a collective responsibility from every member, it was important that few members take charge of the time table of the assignments and deadlines for the group. Fortunately we had few members in our group who always were upfront to remind all of us regarding every engagement like PPTs and group discussions. Ashutosh took care of most the group

meets and managed it quite efficiently .It is necessary for him however to be fair and accommodating. It is also necessary for him to stay calm and cool in crisis situations.
