6 Autumn weather and adverbs of degree

Look at the box below.

We use adverbs of degree to show the level of something.


They go before the adjective.
It’s very cold in London at this time of year. (very cold = there is a high level of cold)
They answer the question how.....?
Q: How rainy is it today?
A: It’s quite rainy.
We can use not with very.
It’s not very windy in Cracow.
We can’t use not with a bit, a little, fairly, and extremely in this way.
It’s not a little hot in Madrid.
(When you use not with quite the meaning is different.)

Complete the sentences below with an adverb of degree like in the example.

6. Autumn weather and adverbs of degree

Make sure students understand the explanation. Use more examples to demonstrate if you need to. The students
can then do the first part of the exercise alone, and the second part in pairs. Give students a time limit of 3-5
minutes to talk about autumn weather in their home towns. Monitor the activity and make a note of any errors
and useful vocabulary.
