Tutorial 202101

Note: Tutor are required to give a short note of ‘What is a “significant figure”’.

- In the process of calculation, don’t round up or round down too early.

- The final answers are to be written as 2 decimal places. But, in the case of the answer is
less than 0.00, the answer must be written in 4 significant figures.

What is a "significant figure"?

The number of significant figures in a result is simply the number of figures that are
known with some degree of reliability. The number 13.2 is said to have 3 significant
figures. The number 13.20 is said to have 4 significant figures.

Rules for deciding the number of significant figures in a measured quantity:

(1) All nonzero digits are significant:

1.234 g has 4 significant figures,
1.2 g has 2 significant figures.

With zeroes, the situation is more complicated:

(2) Zeroes between nonzero digits are significant:
1002 kg has 4 significant figures,
3.07 mL has 3 significant figures.

(3) Leading zeros to the left of the first nonzero digits are not significant; such zeroes
merely indicate the position of the decimal point:
0.001 oC has only 1 significant figure,
0.012 g has 2 significant figures.

(4) Trailing zeroes that are also to the right of a decimal point in a number are significant:
0.0230 mL has 3 significant figures,
0.20 g has 2 significant figures.

(5) When a number ends in zeroes that are not to the right of a decimal point, the zeroes
are not necessarily significant:
190 miles may be 2 or 3 significant figures,
50,600 calories may be 3, 4, or 5 significant figures.

The potential ambiguity in the last rule can be avoided by the use of standard exponential,
or "scientific," notation. For example, depending on whether the number of significant
figures is 3, 4, or 5, we would write 50,600 calories as:
5.06 × 104 calories (3 significant figures)
5.060 × 104 calories (4 significant figures), or
5.0600 × 104 calories (5 significant figures).
By writing a number in scientific notation, the number of significant figures is clearly
indicated by the number of numerical figures in the 'digit' term as shown by these
examples. This approach is a reasonable convention to follow.

requires 100 minutes of production time and 60 minutes of assembly time. At this moment, the
production department has a maximum capacity of 240 hours per week. For the assembly
department, it has a maximum capacity of 60 hours per week. The company can export all that

3. Formulate, but do not solve, a linear program describing the following scenario. Patricia
has at most $30,000 to invest in securities in the form of corporate stocks. She has narrowed
her choices to two groups of stocks: growth stocks that she assumes will yield a 15% return
(dividends and capital appreciation) within a year and speculative stocks that she assumes
will yield a 25% return (mainly in capital appreciation) within a year. Determine how much
she should invest in each group of stocks in order to maximize the return on her investments
within a year if she has decided to invest at least 3 times as much in growth stocks as in
speculative stocks.

Let x denote Patricia's investment in growth stocks and y denote the value of her
investment in speculative stocks, where both x and y are measured in thousands of dollars.
Then the return on her investments is given by P = 0.15x + 0.25y. Since her investment
may not exceed $30,000, we have the constraint x + y < 30. The condition that her
investment in growth stocks be at least 3 times as much as her investment in speculative
stocks translates into the inequality x > 3y. Thus, we have the following linear
programming problem:

Maximize Return = 0.15x + 0.25y

and 25 finishing hours, while each canoe requires 75 assembly hours and 50 finishing hours.
The manufacturer has a total of 8000 assembly hours and 3000 finishing hours available.
How many fishing boats and how many canoes should be made to maximize the
manufacturer’s profit? (Let x = the number of fishing boats and y = the number of canoes.)

The graph of the feasible set S is shown in the figure and the value of P at each of the
