Laser Distance Meter Node

APPLICATIONS
Tunnel and mining convergence monitoring

Deformations in underground excavations

Remote monitoring of slope movements

Fracture and faults surveillance

Bearing and expansion joint movements

Monitoring displacement in structures & buildings

FEATURES
Wireless sensor

The laser distance meter node measures the relative distance Long-range communications (up to 15 km)
between pairs of reference points. One of the two points can be a
natural surface or target foils while the node can be placed at the Long battery life (>6 years @1h sampling rate)
other end point.
Compact (150 x 100 x 61 mm)
Measurement of tunnel convergence is one of the most Visible Laser Class II laser with 655 nm

Method) construction. Portable devices like tape extensometers, High repeatability
levels and temporarily installed total stations allow sporadic

used methods, the measuring tape, disrupts construction Pointing mode for an easy installation
activities due to the use of aerial work platforms.

Laser distance nodes can be easily relocated along the
Reliable & robust
convergence cross sections up to the excavation front or until
the measured relative displacements are stabilised when the Standard CSV download, FTP push, Modbus TCP
required frequency of measurements is reduced. They can also and API access
be used when permanent monitoring is required.
Robust, small and weather-proof box
In a similar way, the laser distance node measures deformations
in underground excavations and mining without causing work Easy configuration
disruptions and delays.

The laser distance node is capable of measuring the relative

distance and transmitting the data via long-range radio to a
gateway connected to the Internet. One gateway can support
hundreds of nodes in the same network that is also measuring
other sensors installed in the monitoring sections (borehole
extensometers, pressure cells, load cells, strain gauges etc). It
can be easily configured and connected with a USB cable and an
Android phone.

LoRa Radio Range

GATEWAY TO NODE
Open Field 15 km (10 km for PicoNode)

Urban 4 km (2 km for PicoNode)

Manhole urban 2 km (1 km for PicoNode)

Tunnel 4 km (2 km for PicoNode)

The above information is based on using an external antenna. The unit comes with an internal antenna as standard which may result in a reduction in
range depending on the site conditions. Radio range depends on specific environmental conditions so these distances are only indicative.

INTERNAL ANTENNA RECOMMENDED USAGE

Small area projects (< 1 km distance)
e.g. monitoring of bridges, buildings, cultural heritage, slope stability and natural hazards.

Long distance lineal construction projects (when the Gateway will be located close to one end)
e.g. metro construction, tunnels, railway construction and maintenance, motorways, tailings dams.

Special site conditions

e.g. where vandalism is a concern or when nothing can protrude such as tunnels in operation.

EXTERNAL ANTENNA RECOMMENDED USAGE

Wide area projects (> 2 km)
Particularly in North America and regions where 6 dBi antenna is required.

Long distance lineal construction projects (when the Gateway will be located in the middle of the monitored section)
e.g. metro construction, tunnels, railway construction and maintenance, motorways, tailings dams.

Wide area projects with spread monitoring points

e.g. monitoring of open pits, soil consolidation, land reclamation, airports, ports.
