Effects of Oil Spill and How Do Residents Near Survive this Hazard?

Last February 28, 2023 in the middle of the ocean within the vicinity of
Naujan, Oriental Mindoro, a devastating spill happened. MT Princess Empress spread
gallons of oil wastes throughout the shoreline of different provinces in the
MIMAROPA Region.
Impacts of the spill are easily seen as authorities tries their best to mitigate the
dreadful consequences of the incident. Families worries about their health as the spill
continues to spread in different areas, the availability of clean drinking water and the
freshness of the food coming from the ocean was the main concern of the individuals.
Individuals that solely depends on fisheries as their main source of income shows
doubt on how they can continue to support their family in their everyday living. Aids
from the local and national government have been provided this could only last for
couple of days, as stockpiles could minimize. Impacts on the Local Economy have
been also a big concern for the Provincial Government as one of the main source of
income in the province comes from the fisheries and the marine tourist spots.
Environmental effects have also been easily visible since the spread of the oil spill,
not only on the organisms living on the ocean but also to organisms present in shores
and mangroves. Different marine protected areas are also in danger of being
destructed due to crucial effects of the spill. And as the spill continues to spread the
areas under the vicinity of the provinces of Antique, Occidental Mindoro, and
Palawan are also now affected by the dangerous spill. Destroying hectares of
mangroves, sea grasses, and coral reefs it will also result to a great decrease in species
of different marine animals. And as the ship continues to be submerged in the middle
of the sea the devastating effects continues to spread and still gradually affect the
communities, declining the hope in the individuals that the consequences of the
incident would be mitigated soon.
