EXPT 7-.V-NOTCH
7.1 Aim: To calibrate the given notch and to estimate the coefficient of discharge.
7.3 Procedure :
1) Angle of V Notch is noted
2) Pump is started. The regulating valve of the delivery pipe is opened and water is made to flow
through the channel.
3) The regulating valve is closed completely so that the excess water drains out of the channel
through the notch. The channel will now be filled only up to the crest of the notch.
4) The hook gauge is lowered till the tip of it just touches the free surface of water and the reading
of hook gauge is noted this is initial reading h1
5) The regulating valve is opened slightly so that water is flowing over the crest with some head
under steady condition.
6) The hook gauge tip is adjusted so that it just touches new free surface of water
7) The tip is observed for some time and if the tip and water surface are at the same condition, the
final reading of hook gauge h2 is noted. Otherwise the process 6 is repeated till required
condition is achieved.
8) The exit valve of the measuring tank is closed and time taken for specified raise R of water in the
piezometer of the measuring tank is noted.
9) The exit valve of the measuring tank is opened after taking the above reading.
10) the above procedure is repeated at least three times for different increased heads by gradually
opening the regulating valve
11) The experiment is completed by stopping the pump.
7.4 Hints:
1) The hook gauge readings are noted accurately by using the provided vernier-scale
