Definition
The method used to detection of service induced cracks
usually caused either by fatigue or by stress corrosion.
Eddy current inspection can be performed with minimum of
part preparation and high degree of sensitivity.
Eddy currents are circular & oriented perpendicular to the
direction of the applied magnetic field.
WORKING PRINCIPLE
Eddy currents are created through a process called
electromagnetic induction.
When alternating current is applied to the conductor, such
as copper wire a magnetic field is develops in and around
the conductor.
This magnetic field expands as the alternating current rises
to maximum and collapse as the current is reduced to zero.
Due to this a dynamic expansion and collapsing magnetic
field forms.
ADAVANTAGES
 Sensitive to small cracks and other defect
 This inspection gives immediate result
Equipment is very portable
Minimum part preparation is required
Inspects complex shapes
DISADVANTAGES

 Only conductive materials can be inspected

 High skill and training required
 More expensive
 Surface finish and roughness may interfere
 Depth penentration is required
