Secrets of
JEREMY
HARWOOD
The ultimate holistic therapy, the flower
remedies discovered by Dr. Edward Bach in
the late 1920s and 30s are a safe, natural
way of dealing with the negative emotions
that he believed are a cause of disease. This
accessible guide reveals the secrets of the
"twelve healers"—the plants that formed the
basis of Bach's observations—and the
further twenty-six remedies that he went
on to discover. Drawing on the innate
healing powers of specific wild flowers,
the remedies help individuals balance their
emotions. Learn to use these simple, effective
remedies and enable your emotions to flow
freely and positively once more.

EDWARD BACH
THE MAN AND HIS FLOWERS
Dr. Edward Bach—the name, by the way, is pronounced "Batch"—must have
been a fascinating man to know. The amazing thing, in fact, is that we know
so much about his work, for he left relatively little in the form of permanent
research records behind. This was an act of deliberate omission. Once Dr.
Bach had completed his final work on his system of healing, he burned most of
his notes as part of his policy of keeping things as simple as possible. The
section of Secrets of Bach Flower Remedies, you will find out more about the

Healing Fundamentals
"Our work is steadfastly to adhere to
the simplicity and purity of this method
of healing." At about the same time,
Bach burned many of his research
notes. In his mind, the discarded
research, like the theories he had
abandoned as his work progressed,
had now outlived their purpose. All that
it was necessary to say, he believed,
was now set down in the final version
of his work: The Twelve Healers and
Other Remedies.

A FLOWER-BY-FLOWER GUIDE
The detailed descriptions that follow tell you everything you need to know
about the individual flowers and plants that Dr. Bach identified as being the
essential components of his unique system of healing. They are grouped in seven
separate categories, following the masterplan laid out in his seminal work, c-m If
you decide to try making your own remedies, you should ensure that the plants
you use are exactly the same botanically as the ones originally identified and
prescribed by Dr. Bach. Substituting others means that the resulting remedies
will not work as they should. You should also be aware that, even if the plants
are botanically correct, differences in soil and climate can also limit the

help you decide which path
you should consider taking.
WILD OAT What Dr. Bach called his Wild Oat remedy actually
comes from a wild grass that is noted for its short flowering time. It was
discovered just after Dr. Bach moved to Oxfordshire, completing the first series
of 1 9 remedies. One of the specific times that Wild Oat is particularly advised
is if you are feeling frustrated and dissatisfied as a result of your inability to find
your true path and direction in life. You know that you have reached a
crossroad, but you do not know which way to turn for the best. The remedy
helps by encouraging you to listen to your guiding inner voice, so that you can
establish what you really want in life
and in which direction you need to
be heading. It points you to fulfilling
yourself and your vocation.

people tend to daydream about the future,
Honeysuckle people, according to Dr. Bach, are
the complete opposite. Their tendency is to look to the past, maybe to happier
days. As a result, there is the risk of losing interest in the issues and
demands of the present, missing out on much of life as a result through a
preoccupation with past events and happenings. The remedy will help you by
encouraging you to focus more on the present, helping you to put the past into
perspective, so that it does not come to dominate your thoughts. Honeysuckle
may help bereaved people who think back all the time, or act as if their

In a negative state,
Vervain people lose the
ability to appreciate
others' points of view.
VERVAIN As Dr. Bach noted, Vervain people are often full of "big
ideals and ambitions for the good of humanity," they "do not like to listen to
advice" and can be "intolerant of the opinions of others." They are strong-willed
and problems arise if they get carried away with their own enthusiasm, when
their inability to switch off may mean that they run the risk of working themselves
into the ground. The remedy encourages you to be more flexible mentally, and
also to take a calming step back to relax.
Harvesting
Vervain blooms in mid
to late summer. It is
best harvested young.

Beauty
The Beech remedy will help you
by injecting more beauty into life.
BEECH According to Dr. Bach, Beech is the remedy for people who
"feel the need to see more good and beauty in all that surrounds them." The
sign of a negative Beech state is to lack tolerance of others, particularly of the
ways in which they lead their lives. People like this are constant carpers and
critics, quick to condemn rather than make any effort to understand. The
remedy helps to generate tolerance. It also helps to deal with the irritable
outbursts that may feature as part of a negative Beech state.

Beech trees can reach
heights of 100 feet

any opinions other than your own. Not
only are you absolutely positive that
what you want is best, but also that it is
illogical for anyone else to argue against
it. If this happens, you can be extremely
destructive and condemnatory.
Gaining in tolerance
The remedy helps you to be, as Dr.
Bach described it, "more tolerant,
lenient, and understanding of the
different way each individual and
all things are working to their final
perfection." You will come to
appreciate that, in fact, there is a lot
to be said for encouraging diversity. In
addition, you will learn that you can
only benefit by showing a willingness to
learn from and help others.

The Negative State
"I jammed my thumb between the upper and lower sashes of a stiff window
and could not get it free until the frames were literally pried apart. It was a
great shock, I was in panic, and I felt like having hysterics. The pain was
extreme and the nail itself had turned black.
I dashed for the Rescue Remedy, taking some internally and pouring some
into a bowl of water, into which I plunged my thumb for 1 5 minutes. Almost
immediately, my nerves were calmed and, to my amazement, the black
discoloration disappeared within half an hour. By the next day, the
remaining soreness had vanished. I didn't even lose the nail."
