PERFORMANCE BRIEF

Nirmal Art Association and Batara Gowa Institute of Arts and Culture proudly present

Indonesian Scent Series: LINO (The Earth)

A music, dance, and rituals performance inspired by the art and cultural heritage of Makassar.

Lino literally means the world or the universe. Lino describes the perspective of the people of
Makassar and Bugis (ethnics who inhabit Makassar City) on cosmological concepts that are
embedded and well preserved in the form of a philosophical understanding of Sulapa Appa'
(rectangular) which each side represents the four elements, namely Fire, Water, Earth, and Air.

It is from this perspective that the minds of the Makassarese and Bugis people actually view the
universe (Kosmos) as consisting of four basic elements that are strung together as a system or
entity that is very complicated but very organized.

The Lino Show consists of:

1. Empo ri Lino
A musical composition that depicts humans and nature as an inseparable unit. As a unit, all of
these things are interrelated and mutualism. Nature as a unified whole system is a collectivity of
a series of interrelated, dependent, and functional subsystems.

2. Ma'lino
Ma'lino which means down to earth is a dance that describes the relationship between humans
and each other in the perspective of Makassar women. This dance also has the meaning that
when we are down to earth and based on the ancestral way, we will be able to face various
problems of living in society. The four dancers symbolize the philosophy of Sulapa Appa.

3. Loangeng Lino
Loangeng Lino which means cleaning the earth is a depiction of the relationship between
humans, nature, and Dewata SeuwaE (God Almighty in Buginese). Is a ritual carried out to
"cleanse" the earth of bad things and disasters that may befall. Loangeng Lino is a ritual
performed by Bissu, a multigender community of priests who represent the five genders in the
beliefs of the Bugis indigenous people.
