1. Relationships and blood relations

Blood relations are known as relations that have the closest connection among family from our
birth. For example: mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter etc. In the case of marriages, these
relations from the spouse’s end are commonly known as father-in-law, mother-in-law,
daughter-in-law etc.

2. General relations in family

General relations in the family include mother, father, sister, brother, son, daughter, uncle, aunt,
niece, nephew, grandfather, grandmother and their in-law counterparts.

3. Coded blood relations

Specific codes/symbols are given in the question to denote certain relationships. Usually, it is
asked to tell the relation between two people by solving the code given using the information
provided in the question. Following example may help.

Question:

A + B means A is the son of B. A =B means A is the sister of B. A − B means A is the wife of B. A ×


B means A is the brother of B. A ÷ B means A is the mother of B.

What do we mean by X = Z + Y?

(a) X is the aunt of Y.

(b) X is the daughter of Y.

(c) X is the niece of Y.

(d) X is the sister of Y.

Solution: Z is son of Y and X is sister of Z. Therefore, X is the daughter of Y. Option (b).

4. Types of blood relations

Typical questions include to recognize the relation between two peoples using the information in
the question.

Question: Pointing to a photograph, a lady said, I have no sister, but that man’s father is my father’s
son.” Whose photograph was it?

(a) Her brother

(b) Her son

(c) Her father

(d) Her nephew

Solution: As she has no sisters and the man’s father is her father’s son, the man, father must be her
brother and the man, her nephew (d).

5. Family tree in blood relations

Following notations are used to draw a family tree and show various relations.

The Older generation is placed on top and younger generations progresses the tree downwards.

6. Puzzle based on family and blood relations:

Typical questions include figuring out the relation between two people using the information given
in the question. Following example may help:

Question: A is the brother of B. B is the son of C. D is C's father then what is A of D?

(a) Brother

(b) Son

(c) Grandson

(d) Grandfather

Solution: As B is son of C and brother of A, A must be son of C. D is C’s father, then A must be D’s
grandson (d).
