IS Zambia fighting a losing battle against the coronavi-
rus? The Ministry of Health has put up a spirited fight on
two fronts; treatment and awareness campaigns.
The effectiveness of the treatment is reflected in the

The awareness campaign on the other hand has almost
been derailed by pessimistic views from some leaders,
especially from the opposition ranks.
Hopefully, it may not be too late to improve on the
awareness campaign and ensure that majority Zambians
observe the health guidelines of masking up, sanitising
and social distancing.
Recently, Health Minister, Dr Chitalu Chilufya warned
that Government would ban crowds. Even though this
pronouncement was welcomed by health personnel, it is
yet to be actualised. People are still gathering and making
merry.

an enormous success, complete
with technological development.
Democracy has brought a huge
increase in people’s wealth, a
reduction in absolute poverty in
our nation, improved welfare in
general, but democracy has had
its shortfalls.
Zambia has had less trust be-
tween the country’s main politi-
cal players, the PF and UPND.

supporters feel they have been
left behind by the governing PF
and that the political party of
their choice has neither taken
care of them.
On the other hand, political
analysts see that the UPND lead-
ers’ inability to handle problems
related to the requirements of
their incarcerated supporters
leads to self-induced disaffec-
tion.
Besides, UPND’s linkage made
to the feeling of pre-election
atychiphobia and anticipated
post-election insecurity is self-
deluding.
In our country we have chal-
lenges in relation to the capacity
to find ex-inmates’ hope, to find
them jobs, and if the ex-prison-
ers are educated it creates enor-
mous frustrations for them.
All this generates, in a context
where also political parties have
not been able to adapt to the
new changes in the Information
and Communication Technol-
ogy (ICT), this generates a gap
between public opinion and the
government. That is one of the
factors, today, that undermines
governance in general.
And then, if UPND leaders
associate it with perceived elec-
toral corruption and other relat-
problem to handle. It is clear
that reform is needed to recon-
cile people with political parties;
political parties need to adapt to
these innovations in ICT; need to
empower ordinary citizens and
empower prisoners too. With
ICT, this can be implemented
rapidly. So why shouldn’t prison-
ers be e-voters?
The government would be
able to adapt to the changes in
ICTs that force these interac-
tions for electoral participation
to have a different nature and
reform for creating conditions
for the government to interact in
a modern way, which is a crucial
area of reform that is needed and
bringing with it the empower-
ment of inmates and the capac-
ity of prisoners to have a say in
the destiny of their own country.
Improving governance, and
improving confidence between
the government and its people,
is essential and it is a condition
to improve the confidence in the
relations between political par-
ties.
Zambians live today in a coun-
try that is ethno-politically no
longer uni-polar, no longer bipo-
lar but it is not yet fully multi-po-
lar. The intra-multiethnic rela-
tionships are unclear, bringing
with them unpredictability and
impunity that tend to proliferate
everywhere.
And with the deep mistrusts
between major political par-
ties and ethnic groups that, of
course, facilitate the multiplica-
tion of ethno-political mistrusts
and the difficulty to solve them,
Zambians need a surge of inter-
party dialogue for maintenance
of peace, unity and harmony.
But, they need to be able to
address the root causes of mis-
trust and to have a roundtable
forum nationally-organised to
address them.

Quality Healthcare in
Zambia (MQHZ) has
warned.
MQHZ Director-Gener-
al, Dr Quince Mwabu said
it was important to ensure
proper funding to fight
Covid-19.
Dr Mwabu said it was
disappointing that the
country had already run
out of the kits before it
could reach the peak of
the pandemic.
Dr Mwabu advised
the government through
the Ministry of Health to
quickly put resources to-
gether and buy the test
kits before the situation
worsens.
"The earlier we mo-
bilise and put together
resources for testing kits
the better because the
virus will not wait for us.
We would have planned
about this as a country
months back before we
were hit by the pandem-
ic," he said.
Dr Mwabu said that
the pandemic was quick-
ly spreading across the
country as he stressed
the importance for many
people to get tested.

ga has said.

ECL is determined to lead by
