IVORY
Today is really the day.
RUBEN
Excited about today?
Ruben smiles.
IVORY
You could say that.
IVORY (CONT’D)
I’m more nervous than excited, this
has been my dream for awhile. I
just want to make it reality this
time.
RUBEN
And you will. You’re passionate and
a fighter, I’ve never known you to
ever give up.
Ivory rests her hand on top of Ruben’s hand on her left
shoulder.
IVORY
I love you.
RUBEN
I love you too Iv,
RUBEN (CONT’D)
It’s the law firm, I gotta go.
Everything is going to go fine babe
so stay positive. Go to work, enjoy
your last day teaching at Berklee
because this is a new start to the
future you’ve always wanted.
IVORY
I know, I know. I’ll try to be more
optimistic. I hope you have a good
day at work.
Ruben bends over and kisses Ivory. Ruben turns away to walk
out the apartment, Ivory pulls him in for another kiss.
IVORY (CONT’D)
Tell Teresa I said hi okay?
Ruben walks out the living room and makes his way to the
front door of the apartment.
RUBEN (O.S.)
Will do! I’ll see you later
tonight.
IVORY
Suite lifee. Suite life.
Ivory makes a turn. Ivory rubs her shoulder and grunts from a
strange excruciating ache in her shoulders.
IVORY (CONT’D)
Hello?
DISPATCHER
Hello? Is this Ivory Wilson?
IVORY
Yes it is. Who am I speaking to?
IVORY (CONT’D)
No! No! No.
TEASER ENDS
4.
ACT ONE
IVORY
You’re too cute for me to resist
you.
Ivory walks over to her mailbox. Ivory opens the mailbox with
her key. Ivory checks the mailbox, taking out condolence
letters addressed to her in regards to Ruben.
NEIGHBOR
Hey Ms. Wilson. How you doing?
IVORY
Hi, I’m doing alright. Thanks.
MR. FLETCHER
Judy, please meet me in my office.
I have a new case I’d like you to
begin working on.
JUDY
Okay sir, no problem. I’ll be there
in a second.
Judy takes off her jacket and places it on the back of her
chair. She puts her handbag on her desk and walks to Mr.
Fletcher’s office.
JUDY (CONT’D)
Here I am. (smiles)
So what’s this new case?
MR. FLETCHER
Wonderful. So there’s a family, not
too far from here. The father is
abusive towards the mother and the
child.
JUDY
Oh my god. That’s terrible. What’s
the latest update on their
situation? The mother and the child
need to be taken out of that
environment immediately.
MR. FLETCHER
As of right now, the mother took
her son and is staying with a
family member. However, the father
is still in the picture.
JUDY
I’ll get right on it and see what I
can do.
Mr. Fletcher hands Judy the case folder. Judy takes the
folder and glances at the names of the family on the flap of
it.
6.
MR. FLETCHER
Great. Notify me once you’ve
completed the case or if you have
any additional questions.
JUDY
I will definitely do that. Thanks.
Judy walks out of Mr. Fletcher’s office. Judy sits back down
in her cubicle. Judy looks through the case folder and reads
the files. Judy does research on her computer.
Judy grabs a pencil from her pencil holder. She writes down
strategies for helping the family.
Judy starts writing but takes a pause. Judy taps her pencil
on her desk, finding it difficult to concentrate. Judy looks
over at a photo of her and her boyfriend. Judy starts to cry.
Judy uses a napkin to wipe her tears away, she looks around
hoping no one saw. Judy closes the case folder and grabs her
handbag and jacket.
JUDY (CONT’D)
I’m sorry to bother you.
MR. FLETCHER
Everything alright Judy?
JUDY
It’s nothing serious. There’s just
stuff going on at home. I know that
I have to finish that case but I
was wondering if I could have the
day off? I just need some personal
time right now.
MR. FLETCHER
Yeah, absolutely. If you need more
time, I can give you an extension
on the case?
JUDY
Thank you Mr. Fletcher. That would
mean a lot.
7.
MR. FLETCHER
You’re one of my best employees.
Besides, it’s best to deal with the
things that are taking a toll on
you. I’ve been there.
JUDY
Hey. Are you free right now? I’m
not doing okay.
Ivory laughs at the jokes from the sitcom. Ivory turns off
her television when the sitcom ends. Ivory kisses Hildegard’s
head and walks to her bedroom. Ivory takes out her violin
from the violin case. Ivory places out composed sheet music
dedicated to Ruben.
Ivory sits and takes a deep breath. Ivory plays the sheet
music passionately. Ivory becomes more relaxed with each
movement she makes. Ivory pauses and stops playing before
reaching the end of the song.
IVORY
Ruben- I miss you so much.
IVORY (CONT’D)
Hey Liv.
OLIVIA (O.S.)
Heyy! What are you doing right now?
I hope you’re not doing anything
right now.
IVORY
You’re in luck.
8.
OLIVIA (O.S.)
Good because I’m outside your
building.
IVORY
You love surprises don’t you?
OLIVIA (O.S.)
That’s not the only thing I love.
Do you know what time it is?
IVORY
Are you trying to invite me to
brunch right now?
OLIVIA (O.S.)
Hell yes. And I won’t take no for
an answer so you should go ahead
and get changed.
IVORY
I don’t know if going out and
drinking is the best idea. Maybe
I’ll just stay in today and cuddle
with Hildegard.
OLIVIA
Iv, please. It’ll be fun and I miss
you. Don’t make me beg to hang out
with my bestfriend.
IVORY
You don’t make this easy do you?
Fine I’ll go.
OLIVIA
Yay! I’ll be waiting outside. Bye.
Ivory eats her meal and sips her mimosa. A ditzy, bubbly,
talkative woman, OLIVIA GOMEZ (27), pours mimosa into her
glass from the pitcher. Olivia takes a sip of her drink and
looks over at Ivory.
OLIVIA
So, let’s be real for a second. How
are you doing? I know how much pain
Ruben’s death had on you.
IVORY
Honestly, I feel lost. I feel like
my life was finally where it needed
to be and suddenly all of completed
puzzle pieces were scattered.
IVORY (CONT’D)
It’s as if, everything I did and
worked towards was for nothing.
(tears up) He was everything to me
but even I couldn’t keep him alive.
OLIVIA
You can’t blame yourself for
something you had no control over.
No one could have known that he’d
be in an accident.
IVORY
I just wish I had more time with
him. He was my fiancé. We planned
to start a family together The
thought of having to do that with
anyone other than him is
heartbreaking.
OLIVIA
I know Iv, I wish you did too. All
I want is you to be happy. It hurts
me to see you in pain.
IVORY
I hate being like this. I’ve been
so depressed lately. It’s hard to
find pleasure in anything anymore.
10.
OLIVIA
Even with music? You haven’t been
playing your violin at all?
IVORY
I try but I just can’t seem to find
motivation. I’m just not feeling
like myself.
OLIVIA
Ivory not playing music? That’s not
like you. What about the song you
wrote for Ruben?
IVORY
I haven’t gotten far yet. I guess
you can say I’m having writer’s
block. It’s been like this for a
few months.
OLIVIA
It won’t be like this forever. I’m
worried Iv, I’m always working and
you’re alone in your apartment. I
just don't want you to be closed
off from the world.
IVORY
I just need time to heal and focus
on myself.
OLIVIA
That reminds me, I think you should
go on a vacation. I know what
you’re going to say. I think it
would be good for you to relax and
not be reminded of what you’ve
lost.
IVORY
I don’t know Olivia. I’ve taken
your suggestions before and they
don’t always go well.
OLIVIA
You can trust me. A few of my
coworkers have been talking about
resorts and retreats they’ve been
to.
11.
OLIVIA (CONT’D)
I decided to find them online so I
can send you a few that you could
think about.
IVORY
The locations do look really nice.
OLIVIA
See? I told you I wasn’t going to
disappoint.
IVORY
I’ll look into it. I’m not going to
make any promises but you’re right.
A break to take my mind off of
things would be helpful.
JUDY
Thanks Keenan.
KEENAN
No problem sis. Are you feeling
better?
JUDY
A little bit. This is my favorite
tea. Chamomile tea, I remember when
mom used to make this for us when
we were little.
KEENAN
It always helped comfort me.
JUDY
I need all the comfort right now.
Andrew and I are pulling away from
each other. Well, he’s more so
pulling away from me.
12.
KEENAN
Do you think it’s stress from his
firm? Or do you think it’s because
of-
JUDY
The miscarriages?
KEENAN
Yeah. That.
JUDY
It has to be because of that. The
miscarriages have taken a toll on
both of us. I’ve always dreamed of
being able to start a family with
him and not being able to have that
is a fucking nightmare.
KEENAN
He needs to consider you. Judy,
you’ve been trying and trying to
have children for him. All he’s
doing is taking out his anger on
you by not being by your side.
JUDY
But I can’t force him to want to
work on our relationship. I call
him and he doesn’t answer. He
barely even comes home anymore.
JUDY (CONT’D)
I feel so alone Keenan. It’s like
I’m fighting a losing battle.
KEENAN
You’re not. I know you both love
each other, you’re just going
through a rough patch.
Keenan reaches over and hugs Judy. Judy embraces the hug and
holds Keenan tight.
KEENAN (CONT’D)
I have something that might cheer
you up. Stay right there.
13.
Keenan gets up from the couch and walks over to front door.
Keenan picks up a covered up painting from the floor. Keenan
takes the painting back over to the couch and sits. Judy
stares at him in anticipation.
KEENAN (CONT’D)
This is a new art piece that I’m
working on. It’s inspired by the
Italian Baroque period.
JUDY
Ooh, I’d love to see it Keen.
JUDY
It looks captivating. I like the
details you included.
Judy reaches her hand out to hold the painting. Keenan passes
the painting to her. Judy rests the painting in her lap
facing her and closely examines it.
JUDY (CONT’D)
Keenan, you’re talented as fuck.
Why haven’t you opened up an
exhibition?
KEENAN
I’ve been trying, life in Cali
isn’t as easy as it seems. The art
world is competitive. You have to
be more talented and innovative
than those already on your playing
field.
JUDY
You’ll get there. You have the
drive to go places and I really
mean that.
KEENAN
Thanks sis.
14.
JUDY
How do you think I should work
things out with Andrew? I could
really use some advice.
KEENAN
Uh, why don’t you both take time
from work and go on a trip
together. He wouldn’t have anywhere
to disappear to that’s outside of
your reach.
JUDY
I mean it could be the perfect way
for us both to spend time together
without the stress of life.
KEENAN
It’s not a bad idea. If it makes
you feel any better I’d come for
moral support.
JUDY
Please do, that would mean the
world. Any place in particular?
KEENAN
I was thinking Spain?
JUDY
I could get behind that. I always
thought you hated Spain, why the
sudden change of heart?
KEENAN
People change. And it’s beautiful
over there. I figured getting out
the country could help me find
inspiration for my art.
JUDY
I’d love to go to Spain. It’s where
mom and dad fell in love.
KEENAN
Oh yeah, that’s right. So there’s
this hospitality company called
Sapience Inc. They run a retreat in
Ibiza, Spain. I’ve heard nothing
but good things about it.
15.
Keenan gets up and grabs his laptop from the dining room.
Keenan searches up an advertisement from Sapience Inc
showcasing their retreats. Keenan plays a commercial for Judy
to watch. Judy is in awe of the retreat.
JUDY
It’s so beautiful. It’s perfect.
KEENAN
So are you in?
JUDY
Hell yeah. I’ll talk to Andrew
about it and see how he feels.
Hopefully this could help us.
IVORY
Woah.
JUDY
Hey. How was work?
ANDREW
It was alright. Nothing special.
JUDY
Well that’s good right? I’m happy
it wasn’t stressful for you at
least. (smiles) I wouldn’t want
that.
ANDREW
Uh huh. How was yours?
JUDY
Um. (pauses) I’d say it was just
alright too.
ANDREW
Good.
Andrew closes the fridge and sits in the dining room. Judy
continues to try to gain his attention.
JUDY
So I was catching up with Keenan
earlier. He’s doing good, he showed
me his new artwork.
ANDREW (O.S.)
That’s happy to hear. Tell him I
said hi, I haven’t seen him in
awhile.
JUDY
I mean you can tell him yourself.
We were talking earlier about a
trip to Spain? Just you and me.
Keenan will be there too.
ANDREW (O.S.)
A trip? I have a lot on my plate
right now, cases are piling up. A
trip just wouldn’t be possible.
17.
JUDY
You can take time off from work,
can’t you?
ANDREW (O.S.)
I can when it’s not thrown at me
last minute? You can’t just expect
me to throw everything behind for a
trip.
JUDY
A trip? It’s more than just the
damn trip. This is about us. I want
us to spend time together Andrew.
Judy walks over to the dining room and sits at the table with
Andrew. Andrew continues eating his dinner.
JUDY (CONT’D)
Just hear me about. It’s a retreat
in Ibiza, Italy ran by hospitality
company, Sapience Inc. I’ve looked
into it and it’s a great retreat.
ANDREW
And is this affordable?
JUDY
We both have steady jobs and set
incomes. We can afford this trip.
It’s just a matter of will you do
it or not.
ANDREW
Show me the website and maybe I’ll
consider it.
JUDY
Thank you.
Judy gets her laptop from the bedroom and returns back to the
dining room. Judy sits back down next to Andrew. Judy goes to
the Sapience Inc website. Judy plays the commercial and shows
Andrew. Andrew finds the retreat intriguing but isn’t blown
away.
18.
ANDREW
I don’t know Judy. It’s a big ask.
You sure we can’t do this trip
another time?
JUDY
I knew you’d be like this. You’re
not trying to fix our relationship.
I’m the only one who’s invested in
us.
ANDREW
Judy that’s not true. We’ve been
dealing with a lot. This is as hard
as it is for me as it is for you.
JUDY
If that’s how you feel then say
yes. Help me help us fix this.
ANDREW
I- Okay, okay. Fine. If you feel
this is something that can help us
then I’ll give it a chance.
JUDY
Thank you for not giving up.
IVORY
Come Hildegard.
19.
OLIVIA
Ready?
Ivory smirks.
IVORY
As ready as I will be. I just hope
I have a good time.
OLIVIA
You will. Do whatever makes you
happy and nothing else. It’s a
vacation bitch.
Olivia and Ivory laugh. Ivory shakes her head, trying to hide
her laugh but can’t.
IVORY
I’ll enjoy it as much as I can Liv
but no promises. Here are the keys
to my apartment.
IVORY (CONT’D)
Let me know if Hildegard gives you
any trouble.
Ivory kneels down and hugs her dog. Hildegard barks at Ivory
and shakes her tail in excitement.
OLIVIA
I’m sure she’ll be a good girl.
Besides, all I gotta do is keep her
distracted.
OLIVIA (CONT’D)
I’m kidding. Kinda.
OLIVIA (CONT’D)
Let me know when you land, okay?
You better be calling me to keep me
updated. I don’t want to be out the
loop again.
IVORY
You won’t be. I’m sorry for being
distant and it won’t happen again.
I promise.
IVORY (CONT’D)
The taxi is here. I’ll text you
when I land.
OLIVIA
Okay Iv. Be safe!
Ivory walks over to the taxi cab. The taxi driver gets out of
the car and helps Ivory put her luggage in the trunk. Ivory
gets into the taxi. The taxi driver returns to his seat and
drives out the parking lot.
Ivory unlocks her phone and checks the photo library. Ivory
scrolls through old videos of her and Ruben. Ivory clicks on
one of the videos. Ivory smirks while watching it.
ANNOUNCER (V.O.)
All passengers, Flight 826 has now
landed. Please go to Gate 2. Again,
Flight 826 is now boarding so
please make your way to Gate 2!
Thank you.
Andrew walks back into house and makes him way over to
Keenan.
ANDREW
So Keenan, you really think this
trip is going to help us?
KEENAN
I mean, I do. But the real question
is, do you think this trip will
help you and Judy?
ANDREW
Things have been shit these last
few months with us. I feel ready to
settle down but there’s always an
obstacle.
KEENAN
You know you seek other options
right? You could adopt or get a
surrogate.
ANDREW
I just don’t think I can do that.
KEENAN
You and Judy have a lot to talk
about.
ANDREW
We do. I know we’ll get through
this, I’m just hoping for the best,
you know?
KEENAN
I get man. Take it one step at a
time and go from there.
ANDREW
This is why you need to be here
more often. I could use all your
advice.
KEENAN
It’s a good thing I’m going on this
trip then. I’ll have to be the
therapist for both of you.
Judy is sitting on the bed in her room on the phone with her
doctor, a sweet older woman, DR. PETROSKI. Judy taps her
nails on her desk anxiously while listening to her
gynecologist.
JUDY
Can I do anything else to stop this
from continuing to happen? I know
my chances are low but I have to
believe there’s something that can
be done still.
JUDY
Thank you so much Dr. Petroski. I
don’t know what I’d do with you.
JUDY
Thank you. Have a nice day.
Judy hangs up the phone call with her doctor. Judy rests the
tips of her fingers on her forehead. Judy lays her back on
her bed in exhaustion.
Judy glances over to her suitcases and gets off her bed to
finish packing.
JOHAN
See anything interesting?
LUNA
Did you?
Johan grabs a notepad and pen from the center of the table.
An older man in a business suit, TATE CHAPMANN (40), waits
patiently on the video call before clearing his throat.
TATE CHAPMANN
Good afternoon everyone. As you are
all already aware of, today we will
be seeing hundreds of guests to the
Spain division of Sapience Inc
retreats. It will be your
priorities to keep the retreat
running in order. This means that
rooms, dining areas, shops and
beaches on the campus must be
cleaned and efficiently controlled.
The staff members repeat the words, “May you see all” in
almost unison back to Tate Chapmann. Tate hangs up the call.
Some of the staff members gather their things and leave the
conference room. Johan pulls Luna aside and stays in the
room.
JOHAN
Wait. Before you go I want to show
you something that I saw today.
LUNA
What is it?
Johan pulls out his phone and scrolls through his photo
library. Johan pulls up the picture and shows Luna the poster
of the missing girl. Luna studies the photo with her eyes.
Luna pushes Johan’s phone away from her and dismisses the
photo.
26.
LUNA (CONT’D)
A missing person? People go missing
all the time. Did you have a
connection to this person?
JOHAN
No but it should be a concern that
a person in the area around the
retreat has disappeared. The
company would receive more backlash
than they need.
LUNA
Oh so you do have the company’s
best interest in mind.
JOHAN
Of course I do. I’ve been working
at Sapience Inc for years, there’s
nothing I want more than this
company to succeed.
LUNA
Good. Now focus on that. This is a
random missing person. You don’t
anything about her or why she’s
missing. She could have left Spain
for all we know.
JOHAN
So this doesn’t bother you at all?
LUNA
Not one bit. My sole focus is doing
my job and helping Sapience benefit
through me. I suggest you do the
same.
LUNA (CONT’D)
Just some piece of advice.
ACT TWO
Ivory gets out the taxi. The taxi driver helps Ivory take out
her luggage from the trunk and hands it to her. Ivory pays
the taxi driver and walks to entrance of the retreat. Johan
greets the guests at the retreat gates as they walk to the
entrance of the retreat. All of the guests wait outside in
front of Luna holding a microphone.
LUNA
Welcome everyone to Sapience Inc
Retreat! I hope you’re all having a
wonderful morning. We’re all
thankful that y’all will be staying
with us because we’ll make sure
this experience is Heaven.
LUNA (CONT’D)
This season we want to make sure
that you’re all having a relaxing
and joyful time. We will be
offering activities for all guests
and therapeutic resources if you
just need some time to unwind.
There will also be a party for the
guests tonight on the beach so be
there! There will be drinks.
Luna opens the doors to the entrance of the retreat to the
guests.
LUNA (CONT’D)
With all of that being said, follow
me into the retreat so I can direct
you to the front desk where you can
check into your rooms.
Luna enters the retreat and directs guests to the front desk
in the main lobby. Judy, Andrew and Keenan are standing in
the crowd of guests.
28.
Judy holds Andrew’s hand and leans her head on his shoulder
while smiling. Keenan wanders off from them and walks
downtown. Judy and Andrew walk into the retreat.
Luna guides Judy and Andrew to the front desk. Andrew and
Judy get into line behind two other guests.
JUDY
I’m really loving this retreat. I
have a feeling that we’ll have a
good time here.
ANDREW
I think it could be a fun time too.
There’s a lot to do here and the
location is absolutely beautiful.
JUDY
I’m so happy we’re doing this. It’s
been so long since we’ve actually
spent alone time together. At least
like this.
ANDREW
That’s because life is busy Judy.
I’ve made sacrifices for our
benefit plenty of times.
JUDY
YOU made sacrifices? So what have
been doing?
ANDREW
All I’m saying is that don’t
discredit how stressful my life is
because you’re stressed with your
health.
JUDY
Fuck you. All I want is for us to
spend time together but you’re
always a dick about everything that
isn’t in your control.
29.
ANDREW
I will spend time with you but I
need time for myself as well. I
have the right to do that!
JUDY
You’ve spent months alone and the
one time that I ask you to spend
time with me? You make it into a
bigger deal than it has to be.
We’re in a relationship for god’s
sake!
ANDREW
All I want is space! I don’t see
why it’s so hard to do that.
JUDY
I don’t care about you needing
space. I’m worried that you’re
using it as an excuse to isolate
yourself from me.
JUDY (CONT’D)
I’m sorry for all of the noise,
it’s unlike me to get upset like
this. I feel so embarrassed.
Judy sighs.
IVORY
No, I don’t mind. I can be that way
too when something is bothering me.
JUDY
We’d get along very well then.
We’re too much alike.
IVORY
Oh definitely.
JUDY
I’m Judy by the way. This is my
boyfriend, Andrew.
30.
IVORY
I’m Ivory.
JUDY
First time here? Or is this one of
your routine stays at this lovely
place?
IVORY
I wish. It’s my first time here.
I’ve actually never been to Spain
so I figured this would be the
right time to travel here.
JUDY
Us too! My parents actually lived
in Spain and I was born here but I
have no memories of Spain. I’m
hoping this trip will awaken some
of those.
IVORY
I hope so too.
JUDY
Looks like it’s time for us to
check in. I hope I see you around.
Enjoy your stay.
IVORY
(smiles) Enjoy yours too.
Ivory exits the elevator and walks down the aisle of suite
room doors. Ivory checks her key for the room number and
browses the room doors until she finds it.
31.
CONCIERGE
Hi ma’am, I’m one of the concierges
of the retreat. Please feel free to
let me know if you need any help.
I’m happy to assist.
IVORY
Thank you. I really appreciate
that.
IVORY (CONT’D)
May I have a tour of my suite? I
didn’t expect the rooms to be so
big.
CONCIERGE
We prioritize making this retreat
feel and look like paradise. Each
suite is spacious, comfortable and
ideally just for you.
Ivory smirks.
IVORY
A “blissful escape”.
CONCIERGE
Precisely. It’s our jobs to make
sure you and all the other guests
enjoy Sapience Inc’s retreat.
IVORY
So far you’re doing a good job.
The concierge shows Ivory different areas in her suite. Ivory
follows behind the concierge and is satisfied by the tour.
CONCIERGE
And this is the bedroom. As you can
see there’s a balcony to the right
of the room with an amazing view of
the Ibizan horizon.
IVORY
Wow.
CONCIERGE
And that concludes the tour of your
suite. The phone on the bedside
table is how you can contact me or
the front desk.
IVORY
Perfect. Thank you for the tour.
CONCIERGE
It’s my pleasure ma’am. Have a
wonderful rest of your day.
Ivory leaves the balcony and closes the balcony door. Ivory
walks over to her luggage and starts to unpack. Ivory places
her clothing into the drawers in her bedroom. Ivory takes out
her composed sheet music from her suitcase. Ivory reads over
the sheet music and stops at the end where the piece is
incomplete. Ivory places the sheet music on a table.
Keenan enters the art store and walks down an aisle. Keenan
looks at the artwork in the store. Keenan picks the artwork
up one by one and places them back down. An old Spaniard man
assists customers at the front. Johan is standing in the
line.
SHOP OWNER
Thank you for your generosity and
time. Keep supporting Spanish
artists.
33.
JOHAN
I must say the artwork in here is
phenomenal. How did you manage to
get one of Goya’s paintings?
SHOP OWNER
It was donated to me actually last
week. I never thought it would
happen, I don’t usually have luck
with the artwork and supplies that
are sold here.
JOHAN
Goya is one of my favorite artists.
Whoever donated his work is a
saint.
SHOP OWNER
I’m very grateful. It’s worth a
pretty penny but the value of that
piece is priceless.
JOHAN
Oh absolutely. Anyway, I’m looking
to purchase this painting.
SHOP OWNER
Good choice.
The shop owner scans the painting barcode and wraps up the
painting. Johan pulls out his credit card from his wallet and
waits to pay. Keenan continues looking through the aisles of
artwork in the store. Keenan notices a painting in another
aisle and walks over to it. Keenan picks up the painting and
examines it’s details. Keenan smiles.
JOHAN
So this is kind of random but have
you noticed anything out of
ordinary taking place around town?
SHOP OWNER
Something out of ordinary is always
taking place around town. (laughs)
I need you to be more specific.
34.
JOHAN
A woman went missing a few days
ago. I found a poster on a pole
near the retreat. I was just
wondering if you noticed anything.
SHOP OWNER
A woman went missing?
JOHAN
Yeah. I know that you probably
don’t anything, there’s hundreds of
people in the capital town of
Ibiza.
SHOP OWNER
I’m sure it’s nothing serious.
People go missing all the time but
it’s not always something as
sinister as we think.
JOHAN
That’s true. I’ve only been here a
few weeks and there’s been no
reports of crime. It’s just
interesting that I found that
poster.
SHOP OWNER
I wish I could help you more but I
haven’t heard or seen anything.
JOHAN
It was worth a try. Thanks anyway.
SHOP OWNER
(mutters in Spanish) There are
demons among us. Be careful.
JOHAN
What?
35.
SHOP OWNER
Have a nice day sir. Thank you for
your purchase.
KEENAN
What can you tell me about this
painting?
SHOP OWNER
I was told it’s one of a kind. An
18th century painting that depicts
an old Spanish myth.
KEENAN
Spanish myth?
SHOP OWNER
It’s a long story I’m sure you
don’t have time. My family would
tell me about the myth but I never
felt it was true.
KEENAN
I have time. That is if you don’t
mind. I’m thinking about purchasing
this painting. It speaks to me.
SHOP OWNER
Okay, okay. This was told me many
years ago so bare with this old
man, will ya.
KEENAN
That’s no problem at all.
SHOP OWNER
The painting depicts an entity
called a trickster feeding on a
human.
KEENAN
Damn. That’s some dark shit.
36.
SHOP OWNER
It’s art. Regardless if you choose
to believe that demons are real or
not. There’s meaning to painting.
KEENAN
Hmm. I’ll buy it. I’m sure I’ll
find inspiration from it somehow.
IVORY
Hey. You bought that from the art
store. Anything in there worth
looking at?
KEENAN
There’s artwork in there from
various centuries. Some dynamic
styles but nothing too crazy.
IVORY
That’s a bummer. Not many stores in
the arts here.
KEENAN
No, no. I don’t mean to deter you
from going in. I just mean that
nothing in there peaks interest in
me.
IVORY
Why’s that?
37.
KEENAN
I’m an artist. And it’s funny, I
came to retreat to help my sister
and her boyfriend but I’m starting
to realize it was really to help
myself. I’ve been feeling
uninspired.
IVORY
I’m an artist too. Musician. I’ve
been there. I used to wander for
hours on end to find anything, even
the most simplest thing that would
drive me to being creative. It
helped me discover that there’s
music everywhere. Every sound in
life has a rhythm.
KEENAN
You’re wise. I usually use
inspiration from my own life for my
art but never thought to look at
the full picture. The life around
me.
IVORY
I’m just glad I could help.
IVORY (CONT’D)
I’m Ivory by the way.
KEENAN
Keenan.
IVORY
So what painting did you purchase?
KEENAN
Let me show you. Apparently it has
a lot historical background.
Keenan takes out the painting from the bag and unwraps it.
Keenan passes Ivory the painting. Ivory holds the painting
and looks at it.
IVORY
A lot of rich details. It’s pretty.
KEENAN
You okay?
IVORY
Yeah. (smiles) This is a great art
piece. You made the right choice.
KEENAN
The more you say that the more
reassured I feel. It felt like I
wasting money.
IVORY
Not at all. I mean if you don’t
want it, I can gladly take it.
KEENAN
Oh so that’s the game we’re
playing. (laughs)
IVORY
I’m just saying.
KEENAN
You heard about the party on the
beach happening tonight for the
guests?
IVORY
I did. I wasn’t sure if I was going
to go. It sounds fun though and I’m
really enjoying the retreat.
KEENAN
I’ll be there tonight, if you need
any company or want to hang out.
IVORY
Yeah, that would be nice. I’ll
think about it.
KEENAN
Sounds good.
IVORY
I’m going to give this art store a
shot. There has to be something in
there.
KEENAN
Hopefully you have better luck than
me.
IVORY
See you around.
ACT THREE
LUNA
Mr. Alcaraz! If you aren’t busy I
have updates to report back.
Johan turns around to see Luna. Johan rolls his eyes. Luna
walks up Johan pridefully.
JOHAN
Yes. What was it?
LUNA
Everything is going according to
plan. The guests are satisfied with
their experiences so far at the
retreat. I haven’t seen or heard of
any negative.
JOHAN
That’s wonderful. Mr. Chapmann will
be pleased with our progress. Any
updates on the beach event tonight?
LUNA
He will be. I’m almost finished
preparing the event. The
decorations, beverages, food are
all done. The DJ will be arriving
shortly.
JOHAN
Perfect. Thank you Luna, great work
today.
