Chapter 1: What is Combinatorics?

Section 1.2: The History and Applications of Combinatorics

There are several individuals that have explored the concepts and ideas of combinatorics throughout the
history of mathematics. Dating back to 2200 BC, the Chinese emperor Yu observed a magic square on
the back of a divine tortoise (Table 1.8 on page 9 is an example of a magic square). Permutations and
combinations were found to have been utilized as far back as 1100 BC.

Euclid (300 BC) was known to have used applications of the binomial expansion (discussed in detail later
in the class).

Pascal and Fermat (in the 18th century) laid the foundation for probability theory.

Others involved in the development and application of combinatorics include LaPlace, the Bernoulli’s,
and Euler.
