YOUTH STS LESSON 992 - THE JUSTICE OF GOD

Memory Verse: “Thou didst cause judgment to be heard from heaven; the earth
feared, and was still.
Text: Psalms 73:1-28; 74:1-3; 75:1-10; 76:1-12; 77:1-20; 78:1-72
The focus of the book of Psalms are: praises to God, God’s dealings with His people,
prophecies about the Messiah and others. The text of today’s study reveals (i) how
Psalmist appreciates the goodness of the Lord, (ii) the perplexity of the righteous
because of the riches of the ungodly and (iii) the fading of ungodly riches.
Nevertheless, the text documented God’s instruction for all Christian youths, His
wonders of deliverance and judgment upon the sinners and backsliders. It is made so
clear that justice is the quality of being just, impartial or fair.
Question 1: God is righteous, just and fair in His dealing with all men, True or
false?
Justice is the attribute of God. Christian youths should know that God hates evil and
does not gloss over it. “Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not
look on iniquity ….” (Habakkuk 1:13). God forgives the penitent youths, rewards the
righteous with His blessings, while unrepentant youths receive His punishment.
1. PERPLEXITY OF THE GODLY OVER THE PROSPERITY OF THE WICKED
Psalms 73:1-28; 74:1-23; James 5:1-3; Psalms 37:1,2,38.
“Truly God is good to Israel, even to such as are of a clean heart. But as for me,
my feet were almost gone; my steps had well nigh slipped. For I was envious at
the foolish, when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.” (Psalm 73:1-3). Many youths
concentrate on the way the ungodly around them seem to be prospering, while they
appear to be poor, whether financially or academically. Such comparison can make the
hearth of godly youths perplex. Some are almost concluding that, living a God-honouring
life is a waste of time and effort.
Question 2: Is it good for a Christian youth to envy the ungodly?
“The Lord knoweth the way of the righteous: but the way of the ungodly shall
perish”. (Psalm 1:6). Ungodly youths may seem to excel in academics, finance, or social
status, and godly youths may tend to have sense of inferiority because of unaccomplished
desires. Godly youths must be careful not to go back into all the evils they have preached
against - examination malpractice, internet fraud, cultism, or join any other evil
associations. The truth is that the prosperity of the wicked does not last. “When I
thought to know this, it was too painful for me; Until I went into the sanctuary of
God; then understood I their end. Surely thou dist set them in slippery places:
thou castedst down into destruction” (Psalm 73:16-18). The prosperity of the wicked
does not last, he will soon loose all and if he fails to repent, eternal destruction also
awaits him.
The Psalmist went into the sanctuary of God, where he had the understanding of the end
of the ungodly. Godly youths must embrace the attitude of being in the presence of God
as the following did: Jabez, David, Abraham, Isaac, Moses, Paul, and Hannah who
sought the Lord and were blessed when they found Him. Every Christian youth must not
consider any alternative approach, such as visiting herbalist or occultic houses.

2. PROCLAMATION OF GOD’S JUSTICE
Psalms 75:1-10; 76:1-12; I Sam 2:7; Psalm 77:1-10; Eccl 5: 4,5; Deut 23:21
God is known for justice. His justice is closely associated with His attributes- He is just,
merciful, compassionate, sovereign and good.
Question 3: Mention some examples of divine justice in the Scriptures.
There are stories in the Bible that reveals divine justice:
 The sons of Aaron (Lev 10:1-7)
 David in connection with Uriah’s death (II Sam 12: 1-12
A Christian youth should settle on the word of God. “For promotion cometh neither
from the east, nor from the west, nor from the south”. (Psalm 75:6). Adoption of
worldly methods to be elevated, such as examination malpractice, settle teachers to be
promoted, bribe to be selected as a prefect, etc. may bring temporary promotion but the
end can be destructive All believing youths must depend on God for divine exaltation. As
God promotes you, keep your promise to serve Him faithfully.
Question 4: Why is it necessary for Christian youths to fulfil their vows to the
Lord?
“Vow, and pay unto the LORD your God: let all that be round about him bring
presents unto him that ought to be feared” (Psalm 76:11). A vow is a solemn promise
made to God and must be fulfilled. Hence a Christian youths can make a vow. Our time,
talents and treasures can be used to serve God without reservation. Nevertheless, you
must not abandon your career. “Better is it that thou shouldest not vow, than that
thou shouldest vow and not pay” (Eccl 5:5). An unfulfilled vow is a sin and attracts
God’s disfavor and wrath.
3. PURPOSEFUL RECOUNTS OF GOD’S GOODNESS AND STATUTES
Psalms 77:11-20; 78:1-72; II Peter 3:9; Jonah 3:10; Rev 22: 17-20; Heb 2:3
“I will remember the works of the LORD: surely I will remember thy wonders of
old…... Thou art the God that doest wonders: thou hast declared thy strength
among the people” (Psalm 77:11,14). We must also like David recount all the blessings
we have received from the Lord.
Question 5: Mention some wonderful works of God you have experienced.
Christian youths must not forget diverse miracles they have received such as salvation,
success, protection, provision, healing and lots more. Like Psalmist too (Psa 78:1),
Christian youths must be obedient to the word of God that can keep us from worldliness
and sin. We must not undermine the power of God in our lives too. We must also make
up our minds not to go back to things we had forsaken.
Question 6: What steps should a sinner or backslider take to enjoy the mercy of
God?
Backsliders or sinners must take the following steps to be at peace with God:
i. Humble and sorrowful for every sinful acts;
ii. Confess their sins to God;
iii. Ready to turn away from them;
iv. Accept Jesus Christ as his Lord and Saviour.
Delay is dangerous, if you are a backslider or a sinner, act now by praying to God.
