Experiment 3-6 Post Lab Discussion

Experiment 3: OSMOSIS
• Osmosis
• movement of water across a semipermeable membrane from
an area of high water concentration to an area of lower water
concentration.
• Osmotic pressure
• The tendency of a solution to hold water or pull water into it
• The higher the solute concentration, the greater the osmotic
pressure
• Tonicity
• The ability of a solution to change the size and shape of cells
by altering the amount of water they contain
Experiment 3: OSMOSIS- Types of Solutions
ISOTONIC SOLUTION HYPERTONIC SOLUTION HYPOTONIC SOLUTION
- Solutions that have the - Solution that contains - solution that contains
same solute and water more solutes, or fewer solutes than the
concentration as cells dissolved substances, cell does
do than there are inside - Causes cytolysis- cell
- Cause no visible the cells bursting
changes in cells - Causes crenation - Given intravenously to
- Example: 0.9% saline - Given to patients with extremely dehydrated
edema patients
- Example: Dist. Water,
Tea, Cola
Experiment 3: OSMOSIS
Experiment 4: DIALYSIS
COLLOID CRYSTALLOID
Dialysate
- fluid that is made up of
water, electrolytes and salts

- helps clean the blood

inside the dialyzer by
removing waste products
and balancing electrolytes
Experiment 4: DIALYSIS
WHAT DOES A DIALYZER (ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY) DO?
Experiment 5: pH DETERMINATION
