ABSTRACT

This article deals with possibilities to solve compatibility programs which are created for

previous versions of Microsoft operating system. It presents and explains possibilities of solving

via original complements in Microsoft Windows 7. The accent is posed on educational software

and to design optimal solutions of compatibility problems. Thus, the main focused on this study

is to pose educational software and to design optimal solutions of compatibility problems.

The compatibility mode allows you to test the operation of the program as an

administrator by running the program using administrative credentials. To run the program in

this way, click the advanced option on the Program Compatibility Trouble-shooter main screen.

Select Run as administrator. At the UAC prompt, you can be either an administrator or provide

administrative credentials. One the other hand, the limitations of the UAC is that it only analyses

and recommends fixes for applications one at a time, and the applied mitigations only work on

the local machine.

This study involved quantitative and qualitative design through surveys, interviews,

hypothesis testing and online searching that enhance the research and made the study reliable and

valid. The researcher gathered the data by randomly picking the respondents to answer the

survey.

The population of this research was mostly men in the locality of Aurora that has deep

knowledge in the field of computer science. The researcher also included professionals such as
Computer technician and computer engineering that has prior knowledge regarding software

compatibility of Microsoft windows.

Chapter Ⅰ

INTRODUCTION

Research background

Microsoft Windows is the most compatible operating system on the planet, even though it may

not always appear that way when you try to get something working that used to work fine.

There are multiple compatibility issues with some older software and hardware on Windows 7,

Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, but the fact that you can still install a program written for DOS,

or a dot-matrix printer with a parallel connection are testaments to the efforts Microsoft has

made over the years to help users keep working with the software and hardware they rely on day

to day.

Be it a payroll system, a custom-made web browser plug-in, or an aging piece of hardware,

Windows is pretty good at keeping everything working; but not everything will work without

problems, and some things refuse to work at all.

These compatibility problems are often blamed directly on Windows, but the truth is that many

other factors can come into play to prevent software or hardware from functioning correctly, or
even at all. In this chapter we’ll look at what those factors are and examine how you can mitigate

them.

Statement of the problem:

One of the most common problem arises in software is compatibility issues. This occurs

many times for new software released for a newer version of an operating system which is

incompatible with the older version of the operating system because it may miss some of the

features and functionality that the software depends on.

Solution to this problem is to use compatibility mode in order to perform automated

system scans of all the software on the devices. It produces a report that details which

applications and devices work with the latest version of Windows.

Using Compatibility mode allows you to emulate an older version of software. Which

means that it mimics another operating system in order to allow older or incompatible software

or files to remain compatible with the computer's newer hardware or software.

Hypotheses

The following stated here are some claims or research hypotheses that are to be substantiated by

the sample data.

 If a program fails to work properly on your current Operating system and run slowly for

example, then you should attempt to resolve the problem by using the Program Compatibility

trouble-shooter, which runs the software while simulating the behavior of an earlier version

of Windows.

 If Program Compatibility troubleshooter detects any issues symptoms, then it advises the

user with information so that they can chose to apply a suggested fix that will help the

application run better.

 If you have other installed programs that are incompatible with your windows 7 operating

system, then you have to run the program compatibility troubleshooter again. For programs

that are incompatible with windows 7 64 bit operating system, you will need to download the

driver.

Review of related literature

This paper aims to deal with the use of compatibility mode to solve compatibility of

programs which are created for previous versions of Microsoft operating system. It presents and

explains possibilities of solving via original components in Microsoft windows 7. The accent is

posed on educational software and to design optimal solutions of compatibility problems or

issues in windows 7.

According to white canyon compatibility mode is a software mechanism in which

a software either emulates an older version of software, it is a method in order to allow older or
incompatible software or files to remain compatible with the computer's newer hardware or

software. It is a useful tool to run the software while simulating the behavior of an earlier version

of Windows. Often this relatively simple process can resolve the problem and allow the program

to run.

A. All About Compatibility

In 2015 Halsey explained that Microsoft Windows is the most compatible operating

system on the planet, even though it may not always appear that way when you try to get

something working that used to work fine. There are multiple compatibility issues with some

older software and hardware on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10, but the fact that

you can still install a program written for DOS, or a dot-matrix printer with a parallel connection

are testaments to the efforts Microsoft has made over the years to help users keep working with

the software and hardware they rely on day to day. Be it a payroll system, a custom-made web

browser plug-in, or an aging piece of hardware, Windows is pretty good at keeping everything

working; but not everything will work without problems, and some things refuse to work at all.

These compatibility problems are often blamed directly on Windows, but the truth is that many

other factors can come into play to prevent software or hardware from functioning correctly, or

even at all. In this chapter we’ll look at what those factors are and examine how you can mitigate

them.

Types of Compatibility Test

 Backward Compatibility Testing – Backward compatibility testing tests an application’s

compatibility with its older versions. For example, Office 2010’s PowerPoint software

should be able to open a presentation made in Office 2007. It is easier to test as the functions

of older versions are known.

 Forward Compatibility Testing – Forward compatibility testing makes sure an application is

compatible with its future versions as much as possible. It is a bit difficult to do as all the

features of the upcoming versions are not clear.

Forward compatibility in Operating system

Forward compatibility is the ability of an IT system to be compatible with or to support a similar

version of itself in the future. Unlike backward compatibility, forward compatibility ensures the

integration of or interoperability support for newer versions of an IT system with existing ones.

Forward compatible is also known as upward compatible, future-time compatible or newer-

version compatible.

Defects encountered during Compatibility Testing

 Defects due to broken tables or frames

 Issues after making variations or modification in the User Interface (UI) i.e., with respect to

look and feel

 Defects with scroll bar

 Alignment issues can affect the software compatibility

Compatibility Testing Tools

Compatibility testing can be done with both manual and automation testing. The following are

some popular compatibility testing tools available in the market-

 CrossBrowserTesting – CrossBrowserTesting is produced by SmartBear Company. They

offer products such as live testing, visual testing, and automated testing on more than 2050

browsers. They have different pricing plans along with a free trial for 7 days. It supports

Selenium and Opium test scripts.

 Ghost lab – Glottal allows testing of a website on multiple browsers and mobile devices

simultaneously. You can download it for 7 days’ free trial. Interestingly, they accept

payments in bit coin apart from credit cards and PayPal.

 Browser Stack – It is a cloud-based automated testing platform that allows users to test their

application on more than 2000 real devices and browsers. They have different pricing plans

and they also provide a free trial. It also supports Selenium.

 Lambda Test – Lambda Test supports more than 2000 browsers and operating systems with

products to perform automated testing, live testing, and visual testing and to check

responsiveness. They have various pricing plans along with one lite lifetime free plan.

 Ranorex – Founded by Armored GmbH, Armored studio is a GUI test automation

framework. It supports selenium.

 Compatibility testing is one of the most important testing types of non-functional testing. At

times compatibility testing becomes expensive due to the number of devices, platforms

involved in it. But even with a higher cost, as a result of compatibility testing, the
organization gets great advantages such as customer satisfaction, more financial gain and

many more.

 Issues because of change in color or style in CSS

 Change or variation of the font size and font style

B. Common Software Compatibility Issues

In 2010 Lawton Explained Compatibility issues come up when users are using the

same type of software for a task, such as word processors, that cannot communicate with each

other. This could be due to a difference in their versions or because they are made by different

companies. Compatibility issues can be small, for example certain features not working properly

in older versions of the same software, but they can also be problematic, such as when a newer

version of the software cannot open a document created in an older version.

Common causes of Software compatibility issues

Unsupported Operating System

 A system is "unsupported" when the developer is no longer issuing any software patches or

security updates. (For WindowsXP, that happened on April 8, 2014.) From that point on, the

operating system is stagnant.

 The application throws the user access control (UAC) dialog every time one launches an app.

 You don't see a Web browser element when observing WIN 7.

Interface Incompatibility
Another example of different kind would be where one software component provides service to

another. The incompatibility could be as simple as a change in the order of parameters between

the software component providing service. This would be kind of interface incompatibility. This

might be considered a bug, but could be very hard to detect in some systems. Some interface

incompatibility can easily be detected during the build stage, particularly for strongly typed

system.

Performance incompatibility

This can particularly happen where the computer uses virtual memory. The result may be that

disk thrashing occurs, one or both programs will significantly reduce performance. Furthermore,

they may be substantially incompatible if they run on a computer with limited main memory, yet

it may be possible to run them satisfactorily on a machine with more memory. Some programs

may be performance incompatible in almost any environment.

C. Solving compatibility Issues

In 2011 Hansel explained that there is a solution to effectively address the persisting

compatibility issues is the use of virtualization with windows Xp mode deployment. It can run

“seamlessly: which means you can run Xp apps within the virtual machine under windows 7

with complete compatibility and it looks like the apps are running under windows 7 itself.

Without doubt, windows Xp mode is a significant feature for windows 7as Xp Mode allows you

to run programs that are no longer compatible with windows 7.

How to Install Windows XP Professional

 Download and install Virtual PC and windows Xp mode for windows 7

 Select the type of windows 7 and your language

 Click on the download windows Virtual PC and the windows XP mode buttons to download

each file

 Once the files are downloaded, you should install the windows Virtual PC beta first.

 You should click on the yes key to allow this to update to be installed.

 Click on the “I accept button” to finish the installation of the program. When it has finished

installing, it will prompt you to reboot your computer.

 When you are at the back of your desktop, you should now double click on the window’s up

mode beta installation file.

 When the installation programs open, follow the prompt to install the program into your

computer.

 At this prompt, click on the yes button to continue. After the windows XP mode software has

been installed, press the finish button and windows XP mode will start.

When the setup has been completed you will now be in the windows up mode and will be

presented with a windows up professional desktop. While windows up mode is running, the

virtual pc program will automatically integrate all of your host computer’s resources into

windows up mode so that you can use them. This includes your DVD/CD drives, hard drives,

sound card, printers, and USB devices. To close the windows XP mode, you can click on the

actions menu and select close to hibernate your session and close the window.
D. The Use of Compatibility mode

In 2010 Brooks explained that windows let you run in compatibility mode. This can help

older programs run on newer versions of windows, as window pretend (to that application) to be

an older version. This solution option is based on the options to affect startup properties

program, represented by a representative, transmitted startup parameters. In other words,

compatibility mode allows software to run as if it were running in an older version of windows.

Older Software programs, designed for use in a specific window, may require compatibility to be

used. Without it, the software will not run or experience multiple errors or functionality

problems.

The following are the steps of using compatibility mode

 Right click on the program’s shortcut, exe. File, or installation file

 Click on properties

 Click on the compatibility tab

 Check the run this program in the compatibility mode for the box

 Click on the drop-down menu arrow and select Windows XP

 To change the Privilege level of the program-check the run this program as an administrator

box to enable or disable the option.

 Click on the Ok to apply the changes.

 Now, double click on the program’s shortcut, exe. File, or installation file to start the

installation.

 Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the installation

Note: Another solution is using Application compatibility toolkit to ensure what are the

compatible version of application.

Application Compatibility toolkit (ACT)

It is created to determine if different application is compatible with new versions and updates to

windows 7. This toolkit was created to determine if different application is compatible with new

version and updates to windows 7. This toolkit is increasingly valuable to IT professionals who

plan on deploying Windows 7 to an organization with preexisting software requirements.

Advantages of Using Application Compatibility toolkit

ACT allows the IT pro to focus on the following areas of application compatibility:

 Extensive data collection and application inventory

 Analysis of data collected

 Suggested remediation steps for known application compatibility issues

 The application of common compatibility fixes

 Review and repair issues relating to using account privilege issues

E. Updating Your Operating System

In 2010 Andre explained that when updating you operating system, it is always a

good idea to check for any application updates that might be available for your installed

software. In addition, updates usually in the form of patch are often free, but sometimes with

fully featured software packages, there is an upgrade cost to keep current. Examples of this are

software application like Microsoft Office or the adobe suite of graphic application
The Steps of Updating your operating system

 Open windows Update by clicking the start button in the lower left corner. In the search box,

type update, and then, the list of results, click either windows Update or check for updates.

 Click the check for updates button and then wait while windows look for the latest updates of

your computer

 If you see a message telling you that important updates are available, or telling you to review

important updates, click the message to view and select the important updates to install.

 In the list, click the important updates for more information. Select the checks boxes for any

updates that you want to install, and the click ok.

 Click install update.

In 2020 Krug If your OS is so out of date that you constantly have to patch it, then you

might consider upgrading it. Windows and Apple release a new OS every few years, and keeping

it current will help you. By upgrading your machine’s OS, you make it compatible with the

newest and most innovative programs. Don’t take us wrong and think we are suggesting being an

earlier adopter by immediately upgrading to new OS once initially released, but keeping your OS

up-to-date also means that you will be able to open files that you receive from other people

without problems. Should something bad happen to your computer, having an up-to-date OS will

help the experts recover your files. Basically, keeping your systems current means that your files

will be safer, which means that your life and work should be slightly less scary.

Benefits
 The new update may get you rid of the bugs present in the current version.

 The update may bring in some new features to make the application better.

 The update may make the application better support the latest version of your operating

system (in case there have been some updates in that too).

 The update may bring in a revamped user interface to make the application more user

friendly.

 The update may make the application compact, so that it will take less space on your device.

In 2012 Leventhal explained that program compatibility troubleshooter is very

important in software because it helps stimulate the behavior of earlier versions of Windows.

With the help of program compatibility troubleshooting, you can determine what programs are

written for earlier version of windows such as windows 7.

Benefits:

 This helps to navigate the incompatible program

 Automatically gathers list of installed application and device components from computers

 Monitors applications when they are run

CHAPTER 3

Research methodology
This chapter describes the methods and procedures that the researcher will employ

to the study. This section consists of the research design, research environment, research

population, and data gathering procedure.

Research Design:

This study involves a qualitative and quantitative design to enhance the research and

make the study reliable and valid.

The researcher used quantitative design to emphasize the objective measurements

and statistical, mathematical or numerical analysis of data collected through surveys. The

qualitative design has also been used because of its ability to provide complex textual

descriptions through interviews and online sources of how to use compatibility mode.

Thus, with the help of the research design, the researcher was able to gather the data

that were needed for the study or the research

Research population
The conducted survey of the research among the sample size of 10 respondents

about the topic the theory on how to use compatibility mode to solve compatibility problem in

windows 7, ranging from ages 18-50. The researcher chose this respondent because they have

advance knowledge regarding the use of compatibility mode to solve compatibility problems.

The researcher also includes professionals such as computer technician and

computer engineers to assess the information that has been gathered the research specimen of the

study is the respondent who are involve by the constant changes of using compatibility mode to

solve compatibility problems.

DATA GATHERING PROCEDURE

The researcher gathers data by randomly picking the respondents to answer the

survey. Before giving out the questionaries, the necessary consent and permission were asked by

each respondent, since some of the questions are too personal. After obtaining consent and

permission, the questionaries were disseminated to the selected participants, and they were given

only 3-5 minutes to answer the following questions.

The researcher also initiated an interview with some professionals. Proving the

hypotheses in front of the class together with the researcher’s instructor of the Inquiry,

Investigation, and Immersion (3I’s) subject. Also, consuming time in finding information from

the internet.

This data gathering was served as a basis for further enhancing the research and

serve to test its validity and reliability.

Research Environment
This research study was conducted in the Municipality of Aurora Zamboanga Del

Sur, Philippines.

Aurora is the coastal municipality in the province of Zamboanga del Sur. Consist of

44 barangays. The municipality has a land area of 180.95 square kilometers or 69.87 square

miles which constitute 4.02% of Zamboanga del Sur’s total area. Its population as determined by

the 2015 census was 50,5755.

This study can be applied to all, but the researcher only focuses on the locale of

Aurora. This reason why the researcher only focuses one locality was because of the pandemic.

It is also easier for the researcher to conduct surveys or even intimate an interview to gather the

data or information the is needed

Chapter Ⅳ
Presentation, Analysis and Interpretation of Data

This chapter presents the data gathered, the result of the statistical analysis done and

interpretation of findings from the conducted surveys. These are presented in graph following the

sequence of the research questions regarding the use of compatibility mode to solve

compatibility problems.

CHAPTER Ⅴ

SUMMARY OF THE FINDINGS, CONCLUSIONS, AND RECOMMENDATIONS

This chapter presents the research summary, conclusions and recommendations of the

whole study. The finding of the study without so much detailed information is written on the

summary. Generalization and other interferences would be seen on the conclusion while the

recommendations of the researchers to the beneficiaries of this study can also be seen on this

chapter, Generally, this chapter aims to cover-up the end result of the study.

Summary of the Findings

Software compatibility is a characteristic of software components or system which can

operate satisfactorily together on the same computer, or on different computers linked by a

computer network. It is possible that some software components or systems may be compatible

environment and incompatible in other.

One of the major problems arises upon migrating to another operating system is the

software compatibility problems or issues. These compatibility problems are often blamed

directly on Windows but the truth is that many other factors can come into play to prevent.
Solution to this problem is to use program compatibility mode in order to allow older or

incompatible software or files to remain compatible with the computer’s newer hardware or

software.

Using compatibility mode allows to perform automated system scans of all hardware and

software on their devices, and then produces a report details which applications and devices

work with the latest version of windows.

This study was conducted purposely to obtain valuable information on how to use

compatibility mode in software, which can be used as a practical guide in improving the

knowledge and understanding of ways in which digital technology can enhance education,

through the publication of high-quality research.

This research is interesting because the most important aspect of computer science is

problem solving, an essential skill for life, Students study the design, development and analysis

of software and hardware used to solve problems in a variety of business, scientific and social

contexts. In addition, computer solve problems to serve people, there is a significant human side

to computer science as well. The results of the study would also help the students to gain

knowledge about the faults for diagnosis in compatibility issues of programs. It is a fast and

reliable way of sharing information and resources with business. It can help make the most of IT

system and equipment. Furthermore, this study is significant to these individuals and groups as

they would greatly benefit from this study are students know how to solve compatibility
problems is essential to us students in day-and-age. This course will give us the skills we need to

use computers well. Business is an age of booming technology, running a business without

computers is like trying to breathe without lungs. Regardless of the size of business, it’s

important to keep your computer healthy, Education along with improving the way students are

taught, it is also important that students learn to use computers to improve their own work and

prepare for careers in a world where computers have become common.

The study comes up with two hypothesis that are useful to solve this problem. The first

theory “There are several ways in order to solve program error such as attempting to resolve the

problem by using the program compatibility troubleshooter, which runs the software while

stimulating the behavior of an earlier version or windows. Second Statement “There are several

ways in order to detect any issues of application such as configuring compatibility setting

directly on the application by using the compatibility tab found in the application’s properties”.

Third Statement “If Program Compatibility Troubleshooter detects any issue symptoms, its

advices the user with information’s so that they can chose to apply a suggested fix that will help

the application run better.

The affirmative hypothesis stated where tested using observation and interview. The

researcher used exploratory method of research. This are the solutions explored by the

researcher, there are solutions that can solve the persisting compatibility issues in windows 7

attempting to resolve the problem by using the program compatibility troubleshooter, which runs

the software while stimulating the behavior of an earlier version or windows. After the
troubleshooting if you clear the Apply repairs automatically check box when using the advance

option on the troubleshooter, it displays a list of possible fixes, which you can choose from if

they are found.

Each solution is tested through observations, survey and review from the internet. This

study was conducted to determine the effectiveness and efficiency of the solutions to minimize

the error programs and to maintain version of applications on computer.

The research applied the retrospective study where documentary analysis a data gathering

was more suitable. Present data were studied and documents were examined to answer the 8

questions communicated in the statement of the problem.

1. Do we need to use compatibility mode to solve compatibility problems?

Wherein 80% of the respondents strongly agreed.

2. Do you consider compatibility important in computers?

Wherein 70% of the respondents strongly agreed.

3. Is it possible to navigate incompatible program?

Wherein 40% of the respondents strongly agreed.

4. Can you fix incompatible program?

Wherein 60% of the respondents strongly agreed.

5. Do you know how to use program compatibility troubleshooter?

Wherein 60% of the respondents strongly agreed.

6. Do you know what are the common causes of compatibility issues?

Wherein 50% of the respondents strongly agreed.

7. Can you make older apps or programs compatible with windows 7?

Wherein 40% of the respondents strongly agreed.

8. Is it possible to upgrade the operating system (OS) to windows 10 specs?

Wherein 70% of the respondents strongly agreed.

Conclusion:

Based in all data gathered. The researcher concluded that:

Over time, the number of factors that can affect software and hardware

compatibility in both Microsoft Windows and on our PCs clearly extend far beyond older

(legacy) software and parallel printers, and you might be surprised how many of the oldest

products will work without any problems or issues at all. To help maintain and resolve

performance of software, and compatibility issues, using program compatibility mode is

advisable. It is also advisable to deploy the inventory collector onto the clients, or you can

install all the server components or you can install all the server components onto the

software machine, which is useful for testing purposes because this allows you to test the

functionality of the tool without requiring a full client/server configuration. The installation

is straight forward. You should create a new database for storing the data collected. The key

management interface of ACT is the application compatibility troubleshooter manager, to

inventory the software that is being used across corporate client PCs and devices, you need to

create a new data collection package, which acts as a collection agent on each client.
To improve the future system and extend the life of a computer, use methods that

will improve the performance and compatibility of software. There are several ways in order

to solve program error such as attempting to resolve the problem by using the program

compatibility troubleshooter, which runs the software while stimulating the behavior of an

earlier version or windows.

Upgrading the software allows your computer to benefits from additional protections.

Ensuring your system has the latest defensive solutions help limit the threat posed by

malware and hackers. Malicious parties are continually innovating, devising new ways of

attacking user’s threat. However, end users can only benefit from the latest security tools and

if they keep their software up to date. If business fail to keep their software up to date, it will

not be long before they are missing out on new features and services which can add

productivity and offer value to their organization. By using the latest solutions, firms have

the opportunity to streamline and refine operational processes, and ensure their people work

as effectively as possible. By keeping software up to date, users can ensure their system

works as it designed to. Computers can pick up bugs over time, which reduce performance

and sometimes cause the system to crash. This is not only highly annoying for the user but

can prove to be a major drain on productivity levels. Upgrading software when new releases

are available helps reduce the likelihood of bugs wrecking the user experience. If a business

retains the same software versions year-in, year-out, not only will they miss out on new

product features over time, but they will fail to capitalize on vendor support. As new

software versions are released and the majority of users upgrade, attention turns away from

older solutions. Eventually the vendor may withdraw support for older software solutions and

operating systems altogether- as Microsoft will with XP and Office 2003 next year. Very
often, software upgrades are made available for free by the vendor in order to improve the

costumer experience for the user. In the cloud age, it is straightforward to modify solutions

online, perhaps to respond to a new vulnerability that has been discovered, or improve a

software feature. It does not cost the user to download the upgrade, so there is nothing to lose

from optimizing their IT solutions with the latest releases.

Recommendations:

These recommendations apply to personally owned computers that will be used to

access Cornell services. Faculty and staff using university-owned computers should work

with their unit’s technical support and business office.

Some otherwise useful technologies don’t function well in our residence halls,

academic buildings, and administrative offices. With many people in close proximity, these

devices tend to interfere with one another. See our Unsuitable Technologies article for

details.

Most computers purchased within the past few years and running a recent version

of Windows or macOS will be able to handle Cornell-related tasks. See the topics of

Windows Compatibility and Mac compatibility for specific operating systems.

If you are purchasing a computer, we recommend ordering through the Tech

Connection at The Cornell Store. They offer a number of competitively-priced Dell and
Apple computers in standard configurations, along with links to custom-configured Apple,

Dell, and HP (Hewlett Packard) products with Cornell’s discount.

If you choose to purchase your computer somewhere else, it is still worth looking

at the standard configuration at The Cornell Store to get a sense of what specification you

should shop for. In addition, Technology connection has partnered with computing center to

provide service for Apple, Dell, and HP computers, both in and out warranty.
